Another sump question

Am I correct in thinking that the overflow on a tank acts as the intake for a sump.

Yup I think you need to visit someone with a sump setup and ask heaps of questions or google it for some pics or videos once you've seen it all going its easy to understand and setup

I have googled it and looked but haven't found a set up that I can see how it goes that looks remotely like the one I have. I think that theres some bits missing and thats why,

This is what the Tunze unit is.

Yes, the basic principal is 2 water supplies, one with it water level higher than the other.

The water supply with the lower water level (read sump) has its water pumped up to the higher water level supply (read aquarium). The upper supply has a weir set at the water level, as water is pumped into the aquarium, water simply spills over the weir which is then piped back down to the sump, and around it goes.

In your case, you have the Tunze overflow acting as a weir.
