This is what the Tunze unit is.

Yes, the basic principal is 2 water supplies, one with it water level higher than the other.

The water supply with the lower water level (read sump) has its water pumped up to the higher water level supply (read aquarium). The upper supply has a weir set at the water level, as water is pumped into the aquarium, water simply spills over the weir which is then piped back down to the sump, and around it goes.

In your case, you have the Tunze overflow acting as a weir.
