The tank I would like to have is about 144 litre with tropical fish. I have been doing a lot of reading. I want to take my time so hopefully nothing will go wrong. Which fish are the best for a beginner. Should I start with a small number and add more later. I live in West Auckland and would like to know if there is a club nearby. Caryl Posted April 26, 2004 Report Share Posted April 26, 2004 Hi June and welcome. There are 3 clubs in Auckland. Auck. Fishkeepers meet in the Green Bay Community Centre. North Shore meet in the Sunnynook Community Centre and Sth Auck meet occasionally for dinner. Which of these are closest to you? There are some here talking about setting up a west Auck group I think but not sure how far along they are in their plans. When setting up a tank it is important to add the fish slowly. This is so the tank can 'cycle'. A fish produces waste, the waste gets eaten by bacteria in the filtration system and turn it into good stuff. Add more fish = more good bacteria = more good stuff. Add too many fish at once and there is not enough bacteria in the filter to cope with the added waste and the fish get ammonia poisoning. Most of the egg layres are good for beginners - barbs, tetras, rasboras. Gotta watch some of the barbs as they grow bigger than most. Gouramis are nice too. Once you have bought the tank, let us know the dimensions and which fish you like and we will help advise you on which ones are suited to the tank size, and each other, and make sure you start right. kim Posted April 27, 2004 Report Share Posted April 27, 2004 welcome June remember to ask lots of ?'s as thats how we learn, and you will find that everyone has different idea's so you will have to find what works for you, work out what fish you like! look around , study the fish and see how they move in the tank because you might like them in the shop because they look cool but getting them home you might not like them, also by looking at different fish you can see what you like and find out when to add them to your tank, alot of fish don't do well in newly set up tanks, but you can get them in a few months , keeping fish is a pleasure and if you do it right the first time it will not be a chore, DONT PUT TO MANY FISH IN TO START WITH! its not a race you don't have to have your tank set up yesterday! as for the fish clubs in Auckland both you can go and have a look at for free and see if you like it, they are both different, I'm with the north shore club and we have meetings every first Tuesday of the month (but January) and we have an auction of fish and plants and sometimes filters , heaters,tanks and what ever the club members no longer want, we have trips away and bbq's, dinners and lots of fun Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
