Oranda setup

Well I've decided to jump into the cold water and get some baby oranda's I've got the tank, the filter, the water and the fish (next week) what I would like to know is other than oxy weed is there anything else that I should put in with them and what's the best food to use for these guys. I've done a bit of reading and I've seen that they do well on protein but I'm sure there are experienced keepers out there that would be more exact as to what brand, mix suits better than others.

Thanks

Hikari food is good for orandas, maybe some live food once in a while, and any good quality flakes. High protein supports wen growth on orandas. Also, try to avoid pellets, fancy shaped fish like orandas easily become constipated with foods like this and can die if this is left.

The main thing is to give them a varied diet, and clean water.

Hope this will be some help to you :D

IOU1 thanks for that. I had read about giving them pelets and had thought I'd do that but will stay away from it now. I've got a good culture of daphnia that's been sitting here, neglected but still thriving and getting some white worms again and hopefully some earthworms as well. Would you recomend spiralina tabs for them or not?

I wouldn't give them tabs or pellets. They are idiots and choke easily. Stick to flake.

Daphnia will be good but my goldfish (when I had some in a tank insde) didn't seem to know what to do with white worms and they would sink into the gravel before the fish figured out what they were. It was then a case of 'out of sight out of mind' and I would have to siphon the worms out

They did enjoy earthworms though. The kids used to dangle them in until a fish got a hold of it.

Yeah I suppose tablets are the same as pellets, so avoid them, caryl is right.

Excuse me today, I'm brain dead!!! (Got all this chem stuff going round and round- bromine water decolourises rapidly by alkenes as it is a addition reaction and the C-C double bond can easily break.... :x )
