danilada
As above, my male betta has come down with white spot very quickly and it's bad, put the temp up to 29 was 25 and have treated with white spot treatment, nothing has changed in 3 days and he looks very uncomfy darting around and hiding from me, any suggestions? tHEcONCH
It won't disappear instantly - they have a 10-14 day lifespan. Most treatments work by killing the free-swimming stage which you can't see - you have to wait for the white bits you can see to burst before they can be killed. You should have started with a big water change, then followed the instructions on the treatment - if you didn't, do that now.
Caper
Don't forget to take out the carbon if you have any in your filter. Caper
danilada
I did the water change, but forgot the carbon, im not home until 5pm will the carbon do any-thing??
Caryl
Yes it will neutralise the medication, making it useless.
danilada
Bugger that could explain alot. ....waiting for 5:00pm to finish work.....
tHEcONCH
You'll also have to use new carbon at the end of the treatment cycle - chuck the old stuff out.
danilada
ok, so if I take it out till he's better that should be fine, and as I seen it clearing (fingers crossed) I add a new lot?
Caper
You leave the carbon out till you are finished the treatment. Put the carbon back in afterwards if you want to use it again. Caper
tHEcONCH
Yep - take it out until you have finished treating him (read the instructions on the bottle), then put a new lot in to mop up the remaining medication - remember that most treatments continue for a week or so AFTER you can no longer see the white spots (because you still have to kill the free swimming ones that hatched from the white bits). Good luck
danilada
Thanks- im on the edge of my seat waiting to get home.... In a way I feel better to why he's gotten worse, but feel guilty now I know whats wrong and can't fix it. How long until its too much for them and they die?-I know that sounds horrid.
Caryl
Save money and don't bother with using carbon at all Fish vary in how they cope with whitespot. I have seen some really bad cases survive in the end while some seemingly mild ones drop dead. Find the cause while you are treating. Whitespot is a sign of stress and 99% of the time it is poor, or incorrect, water quality. What size tank is it in, how long has it been set up, and what other tank mates are with it? danilada
It has one bristlenose, the tanks 12L- Small but he was happy. have had him for 2 weeks, tank cycled with established filter for 3 weeks prior. I think maybe the brisltnose was carrying the whitespot.
tHEcONCH
Whitespot is dormant in all fresh water - it only becomes a problem when the fish gets stressed and the parasite can actually take hold. Its a bit like how humans always come into contact with germs, but seldom get infected - if we are healthy our immune system fights it off without us noticing - same for fish. 12 Litres is pretty small - the water might be dirty (filters don't remove everything), or it might have got very hot or cold, or worse, fluctuated between extremes - that will stress a fish to the point it can get sick. bdspider
Bettas are happier at a temp of 29 degress anyway. 25 is lower than they would like.
danilada
he died not nice to come home to!
jn
You said tank cycled for 3 weeks prior with an established filter but you've had the betta for 2 weeks? Does that mean you took an established filter and ran it on an fishless tank for a few weeks? (When did you add the bristlenose?) If so, then the bacteria on the filter would have died since there was no fish waste for it to live on and your tank would have started cycling when you added fish. Or have a completely misunderstood?
