Tropheus
Hi looking at setting up a six foot tank for males only. Been thinking about placing an undergravel filter over 70% of the tank and calcite over glass for the rest. Small river rock pebbles will be placed over the UGF and then large river rocks over the pebbles to stop the cichlids from digging around except around the calcite. Two large external filters will be connected to the UGF uplets to remove the waste which will go directly to the external filter. ANY THOUGHTS PLEASE
Wok
Just get an Fluval FX5 forget about UGF
Tropheus
Yeah, but all the crap settles below the rocks. The idea is the remove all the waste and protect the glass from large rocks
Warren
Maybe FX5 or similar and a reverse-flow UGF. I did this in my cichlid tank and the gravel was always very clean and no muck collected under the rocks. You still had to gravel-clean but only the surface of the gravel. ryanjury
Yeah if your dead set on an under gravel filter then definately go reverse flow.. Personally I wouldn't bother, you shouldn't get too much stuff settling on the sand or are you using larger gravel? What sort of flow rate filters are you going to get? firenzenz
I'm with The FX5 option as well. With the help of a powerhead down low it handled the poos of some big wood eating Panaques in my 5 footer. Now it laughs at me as I ask it to handle the same tank which is now a rock laden Male peacock/hap tank. I wish catfish pooed as little as Malawi's. herefishiefishie
What type are the 2 large canister filters? I would fill them up with mostly bio media & just one layer of course foam. Then use an internal with fine foam, catch the smaller particles, adds to circulation. Plus you will not have to clean the canister much as well. For a tank that size, I would gone with a sump. But of course use what you have. Frenchy
Tropheus
Iam using a existing tank i had in storage for awhile with cabinet so cant add sump. Happy to use external filters. Mainly want the UGF for large rock support in back right corner so thought i'd 'kill two birds with one stone' as the saying goes. the rest of the tank will be gravel. Thought when the tank needs a clean the less rock to move the less chance of accidents hence UGF system as well.
