IOU1
Does anyone has any cheapish suggestions to maintain a water temp of bout 24 degrees in all of the tanks? The room is insulated on the walls and is 2mx2m. I was thinking maybe a few heaters in the tanks for the fish needing the higher temps and then hoping the water of the unheated tanks will be atleast 22 degrees for guppies, new born goldfish, killies etc. Would this work? I cannot afford a heatpump or anything like that Would there be any better way to heat it? What do you guys do, surely you don't have heaters in every tank... slappers
run a extention lead to your neigbours
jim r
As above sounds good  ,however I think maybe a heatpump would be cheaper than individual heaters and I know someone who only has lights in his fishroom which adequately meet his requirements. evilknieval69
Put heaters in some of the tanks and see what happens. The tanks should stay warm enough for Killies, and thats all that matters

Dixon1990
Put most of the heaters in the lower tanks as the heat will rise,Well thats what i was told to 2 anyway.

alanmin4304
I heated a 4m x 2.5m room with a one killowatt heater with the fan wired to go all the time.
alanmin4304
The more tanks and therefore water you have the better as it acts as a heat sink to store your heat.
Warren
Try a second hand through the wall style heatpump. I got one from the local second hand appliance shop for $50 and it worked sweet for 2 years before it stopped. Went and got another one for the same price but slightly different size. It more than paid for itself... They also have a fan that runs continuously and an air direction flap to help distribute the heat evenly round the room. ryanjury
I want a $50 heatpump to heat my room! lol Where exactly did you get this from warren? I have looked around at trademe and that and they're soo expensive on there.. Expecially to heat a fish room dont think my wife would let me spend heaps to heat that while she freezes inside lol
Warren
Look for that little second hand appliance shop nobody really wants to deal with - the one with all the junk lying around. They're usually the best to get cheap second hand parts for your washing machine or really old equipment that still goes but nobody would want. The ones I got had no front covers and were well over 10 years old - looked terrible. They work fine though and at the back of the fishroom, who cares... Palmy must have something. ryanjury
Wicked yeah ill have to have a look around.. Are the older ones still really efficient? Ie heat cheaply? I was considering a 1kw oil heater and fan but that might get expensive..
Warren
They're not as good as a modern one but much better than a standard heater. You'll likely get 3:1 efficiency at best compared to 4-6:1 on a modern machine. Considering the $2K+ you'll save though, the difference in power is quite a few years payback. If you get an old one you know if it's any good pretty quickly. The air coming out should almost burn your hand if very close to the outlet (on heating). If it's not that hot then it's stuffed. Likewise with cooling - it should feel like you're touching ice. Of course, you'll need to give it time to get going first...
ryanjury
Sweet cheers for that Warren I had all but given up on finding one for a reasonable price now im going to be hunting for bargains when im on night shift and have the days off lol
