their activity, they are so active all of the time. its driving me nuts at the moment cause everytime i ask my 6 year old son to do anything that requires walking past the tank he instantely forgets whats he's supposed to do & starts gazing at the fish. their vibrant colours, yellows, blues, peacocks etc i think are, only just surpassed by marines.

I've had both - a discus tank for the past three years and african cichlids years ago. Ive just broken down my tank in readiness for a mbuna setup. Theres no doubt that discus are stunning to look at but you can watch africans all day long. Absolute extroverts with personality plus and probably a little less prone to ailments than discus plus just as much colour. Discus can be timid and flighty (each one seems different). Plus everyone likes a little bloodsport once in a while don't they? Watching them sort out the pecking order is great entertainment.

Search the web for info on the Lake Malawi flock and look for some of the 'did you know' pieces - it's mind blowing.

But that's just one guys opinion.

Well they're all Cichlids.

The Malawi for me have the Colour and the character. I've got a discus tank and they are great as well but at a price- at least 3-4 times the effort.

Mbunas don't do it for me- give me those peacocks-

Then I go around to friends house to check out some "A" grade Discus that have just come in- Trust me -you'd be trading in those Oscars and Giraffes tomorrow, staright after the trip to the bank-Ouch!

bah go for the discus mate. the fish all have different personalitys, and you have heaps more options for tankmates. can have a planted tank also. dunno about all discus but mine spend all day fighting and bickering amongst themselves, only stopping to eat.
