ken loach
i have a fluval 106 i clean x2 sponges once a month out of the 4 when i put the top back on the filter and plug it in, it spews filth back into the tank for about a minute. it takes about 45 mins to clear, then it's all good i was wondering if this is normal or if it's bad and if so, how to avoid it... jolliolli
Thats pretty normal, you have just disloged the gunk and it is floating loose inside your filter. When you turn it on it just gets spewed out, nothing to worry about

Ira
I've come to the conclusion that filters create a wormhole in them that connects to a dimension full of nothing but gunk. Because I've gone and cleaned out the filter media, run a brush through all the hoses, made sure every bit was practically spotless...And it STILL spit that crap out! HaNs
Or let the pipes dry out and hook them back up....oscar thinks the gunk is yummy
carznkats
I find that sometimes if my filter is putting out too much crap i will sometimes up hold the outlet up to a bucket and restart it then, then once the filter is running clear again put the outlet back into the tank, saves my tank from getting too dirty. alanmin4304
Don't forget that it is the crud and not the sponge that makes the filter work so don't clean it too much or too often.

Ianab
totally but most peeps have told me to clean x2 sponges of the 4 once a month is this correct? It's probably a good routine, just dont try and get them spotlessly clean. If you just give them a rinse/squeeze in some old tank water and pop them back in they will still work. If you notice the water flow slow down before the month is up then you may need to clean the first sponge more often. If they aren't very dirty, you can leave them longer. Caryl
I only ever clean my filters when the water flow drops considerably. When I set up my Jebo, it didn't get cleaned for 12 months! Since then, I haven't cleaned it again (about 4 months later).

I hold a fishnet over the outlet pipe before starting the filter.
