sorcha
Hi there, I have a few q's I hope maybe someone could give some answers to & advice? I have a 5 ft 400l tank, currently has some gouramis, couple of catfish, few black tetras, neons, platys & kribs & a red tail shark. I'm looking at getting some killies off of trademe. There are 3 different pairs: killifish nigerianus p82 (1 male,2females) $20 killifish striatum (1male and 1 female) $17 killifish epiplatys dageti (1male and 1 female) $10 All about 8 months old. Basically I want to know can they all go together? Or will they cross breed, or should I just get one set or none at all? Are they suitable for my set up. More about each type ie requirements/feeding etc?Are they ok with tetras? I can't find much on the internet on them. Also is that a fair price? Any advice/info would be great before I decide whether to get them or not.
Wok
Hi Sorcha Yes they will interbreed. I personally would not put them in your 5ft tank as they would get lost. so best thing to do is to get only 1 pair. If you want to breed them then you will be better off getting a smaller tank of around 10 litres in size with a tight fitting lid. If you want cheaper killies you will need to join the New Zealand Killiefish Association. However the ones on trademe are a good price. PM Alan if you want to join. There are a few of us killiephiles here all the time. We are more than happy to help out a newbie killie keeper
Alan
All of those prices are less than 50% of what shops will charge you. You are very fortunate that we have a breeder who has dedicated a lot of his time to breed them and make them available at that price. That is the start price isn't it. Or do they have a buy now at that level?? I would agree with Wok, but get three tanks and breed the killies, and put the ones you have bred into the bigger tank when old enough. caserole
Here's my thoughts and no they're not my killies, but I know who's they are. Very good price. The stiatum and p82's MAY cross breed but I think very unlikely, the Epiplatys certainly wont - no way can't happen - completely different genes. They will be very happy in your tank But you probably wont see them = they will get lost to your eyes It would be better to breed them and place the off spring in the tank as you will have more of them to see. :bounce: :bounce: And you can find out how by joining the club 8)
alanmin4304
I keep mixed males of a similar size in a four foot tank and breed and rear them in other tanks until large enough to be added. The tank is heavily planted and the seem happy enough. Don't mix females unless you can clearly tell them apart.
sorcha
Hiya, Many thanks for everyones replies and advice, very helpful and appreciated. Yes I agree it does seem a fair price & yes that is the reserve so they may go for more. What I think i'll do is get either 2 pairs as I do have a smaller tank & perhaps put one lot in the big tank & the others in the smaller tank or get all three pairs and buy another small tank, I'm not too fussed on if they breed but obviously it would be great if they did, next thing to read up on! Would be quite interested in joining the club, but will wait and see if I get any killies or not first and go from there. thanks again. sorcha
Haha that might be a good thing I'm not in Auckland as I do have a nice spare room going to waste! Lol the lounge is already becoming a fish room I'm sure a few more tanks around the house wouldn't hurt

sorcha
Hi, Sorry I've been slack at updating! Yes I got all 3 sets of killies, greedy I know, they are great. So far all are happy in the 5 foot tank, yes they do get a bit lost to the eye! I am keeping an eye out for a couple of cheap smaller tanks so that I they can breed in the smaller tanks, they have definately been trying to breed. My partner decided to put guppies in my small tank so now have alot of them! Cheers for everyones help, they are awesome looking fish.
