Afrikan
Sounds like whitespot... are they itching, scraping themselves on substrate etc? Some people like to nip whitespot naturally, other's use meds.. I am one for natural before anything else, raise temp to 28-29 degrees, extra airation and a bit of tonic salt... raised temp speeds up whitespot cycle.. Cold water changes can definately cause it, especially when you have said "large water change" to. Too much of a shock to fishes system... some are more sensitive to this than others. GZ_Loach
if i had tonic salt what else would i have to do, and how long would it take for the salt to work?
alanmin4304
If they have distinctive white spots like salt it will be white spot, if it looks more like fine pepper it will be velvet.

GZ_Loach
looks like salt and the fish are swimming along the stones every now and then. will go to the lfs tommorow
herefishiefishie
You will have to treat at 1/2 dose, as the loaches don't like the medicine. Treat for full term, increase tank temp to 30 degrees & increase airation. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_FA006 Frenchy
slimNZ
A good artical about ich http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php I uses the tempreture and salt treatment for my fish including the loaches and it work. They can take salt just like the platies. Actually, they quite enjoy it. However, the smaller loach did not make it as the ich come and go for a week before I started the salt treatment. He is too weak to hang on for few more days. The only problem with salt and high tempreture is the plant doesn't like it. If you want to use the medication, have a read at this post. http://www.fishlore.com/Forum/3-freshwa ... ead.0.html
alanmin4304
What medication are you considering using?
GZ_Loach
im not sure, will get a chemical treatment at the lfs today. the guy who owns the shop is pretty experienced so im sure he'l suggest the best medication.
herefishiefishie
Most meds work. And with the salt method, I like the they seemed to enjoy, if they were suddenly more active it would be the fact their skin is burning. Frenchy
slimNZ
if they were suddenly more active it would be the fact their skin is burning. Frenchy Unlikely. They actually come into the salt water when I pour it in.
GZ_Loach
i used "blue circle" white spot cure, used at full strengh becuase for some reason this type of med doesnt harm loaches (thats what the owner said) the tanks a nice blue colour now
alanmin4304
What is the active ingredient on the container?
herefishiefishie
Sorry I should of said be careful with salt. Loaches are scaleless & salt does burn their skin. I was more having a dig at your they quite enjoyed it comment. :-? Frenchy
slimNZ
Loaches are scaleless & salt does burn their skin. Frenchy Yes I read about this too. After getting rid of ich on my loaches with salt, I wonder how much truth is in this.
Chazza404
Ive got 10+ loaches and used salt never had any issues with it, did monitor it and the first dosage of flourish excel to see if any ill-effects etc but theyre fine with it
sharn
They are sensitive to salt but half doses generally dont upset them too much. I wouldnt go dumping a heap in like you would treat a normal fish with scales, ive seen what that can do to the poor critters
GZ_Loach
when i add the medication the tank goes a nice blue colour but the next day the tank is crystal clear, is that supposed to happen? (btw i dont have a canister filter with filter carbon, just 2 internal sponge filters)
Alan
Carbon must come OUT when dosing tanks. It is used later to remove the chemicals if you want to. Redose the tank after removing the carbon filtration. Follow the instructions on the bottle, and don't stop the treatment until it says so, even if it looks as tho you have beaten the malady. herefishiefishie
Yes I read about this too. After getting rid of ich on my loaches with salt, I wonder how much truth is in this. Well the same people I have read up on say to 1/2 dose parasite remedies because they are scaleless. Do you want to test that theory for me too? there is a scientific reason, if I remember where to source it from. I know of people that have killed loaches because they used the salt bath treatment. It is not unusual for the dye to go in a day, depends on factors like heat of the tank, turn over of filtration, airation, plants.....medications themselves tend to only last for 8 hours max.
