Fluval 103

provided you are not looking at anything more than 4 x 2 x 2 decimeters then you will be fine

If you are talking about 4 x 2 x 2 Feet then NO WAY is a Fluval 103 going to be big enough... unless however you do not plan to stock more than 20 neon tetras and have it planted.

Fluval 103 is pretty piss weak. Something like 450L/hr?

4x2x2 is 432 litres. I generally aim for 5x an hour turnover on my filters.

So 432 x 5 = 2,160 liters per hour

So that's a pair of Fluval 405s, or AquaOne CF1200s, or (my favourite) Jebo 819s. I think you'll find a the CF1200 is about the same price as a Fluval 103 too. AquaOne also make 2200 and 2400 models which would do the job nicely.

Other options would include the Atman UV which is basically the AquaOne 2400 with a UV bulb. I wish I could recommend the Fluval FX5 but I am hearing too many bad things from owners.

Oh and price: CF1200 (1200L/hr) is $150+postage online, Jebo 819 (1200L/hr) at our LFS is $185.

A CF 1200 is adequate for the size tank, and if you want to go a bit heftier then a Aquis 2200 is good... An Aquis 2400 might just be a little overkill, however, depending on what you are using it for, 2400 would be good if you are going to have a large bio load... they are a very big filter and have room for a HEAP of media and very powerful. Just pays to think about how much water flow you want buzzing through your tank also. We have two 2400 Aquis running on our 900 litre Tangy tank... and just one alone is rated for an 800 litre tank. But I am one for loving heaps of filtration and have the spray bars adjusted so that the water flow is just steady, no rapids going on

I was looking at getting a aqua one 2400 with a seperate UV. Would the UV lamp in the Atman 2400 with th 5 watt UV have enough guts for a tank 400 litres??
