Insect Direct
Ive just gt a couple of blue drums through a mate and the label on them says "FOAM CONCENTRATE" for turf & agricultural use! Id like to use them s storage bins but this stuff smells potent so is there any soap/chemical tht will clean them out (and be safe for fish) or is waterblasting them about the only thing i can do?? Thanks for your time, any suggestions welcomed
shadowfax
dont know, i heard chemicals get into the plastic & can contaminate (sp) what goes in them. hey mincie whats the weather like there this morning?
slappers
can put a liner in them. if cant be cleaned good
IOU1
I'd go with a liner. We had the same problem and no matter how it was cleaned it still had a smell. In the end we decided to go to food grade drums...
Insect Direct
Thanks ppl, weathers not bad here shadowfax, lil bit of cloud hangin around but will no doubt burn off and be another scorcher this avo. might head out the river again later! Um with these drums maybe if i stick the water blaster in them and give em a couple of good rinses then let it sit outside for a month or so untill mossies move in, then would it be safe to ssume theyre all good? Iou1 got any suggestions where to get the food grade drums??
ryanjury
Personally I wouldn't try and clean them out the chemicals can soak into the plastic and leech out gradually either line them or get clean ones.. As to where to get them from I have no idea maybe go through the phone book and contact local catering companies or something like that? suphew
MAybe you should find out what the chemical was in them before getting too worried. It might be nothing. I have used plastic containers in the past that have had nasty chemicals in them. I have just water blasted and soaked for a while, haven't had any problems (touch wood)
Blackadder
What exactly is the 'Foam Concentrate', do you have any more information?
Insect Direct
All Weather Foam Concentrate 160.1 Organic surface active agent, second drumb says All Weather Foam Concentrate 160.1 For turf and agricutural use.
IOU1
I bought them from Kumeu, a lady on trademe buys food in bulk and sells of the drums for about $23 each. If I find a link i'll post one here. I'm sure there are a few around other places aswell.

Insect Direct
True thanks all the same man, I might start asking around. Only good thing about these 1;s ive gt is i can get em free so im sure ill find a use for them even if its just for mossies out side. For a liner what would one use, just the standard polythene pond liner stuff or ?
Insect Direct
Also what sorta tests can I possibly do to check theyre safy once scrubbed or whatever?
Alan
Use an aquarium and set up a fish or two in them with water that's been in the drum for a couple of weeks. CHEAP fish, just in case.
Ira
You could also probably get some pond liner paint(Can't remember the proper name) and paint the inside of the barrel. Should seal out any nasties.
Blackadder
A organic surface active agent is a surfactant, so you won't need to use soap or anything to clean them since its a bit like a soap. Just use plenty of water.
Insect Direct
awesome yea ive given it a really good hose and scrub (couldnt borrow the water blaster today) and it seems to have cleaned up very well although still abit of a smell to it, ive left it out in the sun for abit (dam its hot here) then will give it another good rinse fill it up and test it on some minnows i think  Should be fine, thanks everyone for your help/ideas etc, I really appreciate it. p.s Ira thats a good idea about the pond paint so ill keep that in mind but i think they may be ok now with a good clean and heaps of water. alanmin4304
It is the foaming agent that they use with agricultural sprays and it leaves little blobs of foam on the ground so they can see where they have sprayed. It is similar to the foaming agent they add to mothers dish washing liquid because she does not realise that soaps need to make bubbles but detergents don't and she wont buy it if it aint got bubbles. It destroys the surface tention on the water---sometimes called a wetting agent--- Water soluble---will wash away. I buy containers that have been used for food because they are made of "food grade" plastic and wont leach into water.
Insect Direct
Interesting, the company im got these from distributes cdax spray equipment so id say your dead rite, also they use foaming agents in spray as it cuts down on the drift you get with wind etc. Hopefully its not to toxic, shouldnt be if its just foam but i dunno? evilknieval69
as you said, you wont realy know unless you try, so chuck some WCMM in and see
alanmin4304
I understand that the same type of chemicals are used to control algae. Things are only toxic when the concentration exceeds the rate the fish can tolerate. If you rinse the container well it should be good. alanmin4304
It is a wetting agent ---destroys the surface tension and helps with absorption of the chemical being applied
tee-em
May contain phosphate, I have two drums that have been left soaking and in the sun and rain etc... still leeches po4. As I run saltwater this is no good...
alanmin4304
Is it from residue or the drum?
Insect Direct
Interesting so po4 = phosphate? Any tests i can do other than just trialing it on fish? Ive never done any test b4 so wouldnt know where to start!
