Caryl
Can you describe the smell? Does it smell like dead fish? Swamp? Roses?

Caryl
A tank ought to have a slight "earthy' smell. I wonder if you had some "dead spots" in your substrate and they were disturbed when you did the big water change.

Caryl
Dead spots can form in the substrate, particularly under rocks or wood. If you moved these during the water change it is possible the bad bacteria that had been trapped underneath has now made its way to the surface, hence the smell. Are the fish still behaving as normal? I would be doing small water changes until the smell went away.
alanmin4304
I have a buck that says you have blue/green algae.
Caryl
Check the plants at the back. When I stripped out a lot from my heavily planted tank the other day I discovered a bit of algae on the thickly tangled ones from the back
