monaro1 Posted December 2, 2003 Report Share Posted December 2, 2003 ok,babies,good, problem,dont know where thay come from. the tank is only 2 weeks old,i set it up because my wife wanted one with plants in it .its not a big one only 160lt it has 4 glass cats (borring fish) 4 hi fin sword / 1 male 30 neons 6 plattes,i think, wife brought there is about 15 to 20 babies hard to count with plants,thay range from 5mm to 11mm long,most still seethrough with a tint of light brown,bigger ones seethrough but orange. problem thay dont look like anyone else. 1st time with fish babies mark Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I wonder if swordtail/platy hybrid offspring can produce fertile young, because that would kind off make them the same species wouldn't it? Most of the swordtails and platys we see are hybridised. All three species cross freely and produce fertile young. In the real world, there are many fertile interspecific (and even some inter-generic) hybrids. Plants are even more promiscuous than animals... Andrew. northland chic Posted December 3, 2003 Report Share Posted December 3, 2003 I bought the liquid fry food about a month ago and it was a little more than $12 (could just be my lfs) but if you get the new one its for both egglayers and livebearers. For the live bearers, use finely ground up flake from birth. Always have a few snails in the tank with the babies, they help stop the pollution, which you should combat anyway, with water changes. They can also be mailed with a bit of water double-bagged in ziplock bags in a normal envelope. I got mine that way, and they took off really well. PM me if you want me to mail some. About the interbreeding, I've heard that both species carry pairs of lethal genes and others that suppress them. All first generation hybrids will have complete pairs, but a percentage of the second generation will carry a lethal gene without the suppressor. This can cause death. This limiting factor means that they count as seprate species. I may be wrong, as I can't even remember the details or where I read it any more.
