and this site says 20-30cm

http://www.aqua-fish.net/show.php?what= ... g=2&id=218

There are three types of gold nugget plecos:

L081 - small spots

L085/L018 - medium spots

L177 - large spot

and this depends on what part of the river you find them in

I dont think it would really matter dude. If you were to breed nuggets (cross bred or not) you would be a legend anyway. They have to be pretty big before they breed tho and fish that size just arent available here. You would just have to wait a long long time for them to get to the right size. I'm sure some of the three species would interbreed given the chance

Thanks man. Yeah from what I've read overseas it's pretty unheard of. Although I think Gannet told me someone in NZ use to breed them but there wasn't much of a market. How big do they have to be before they'll breed? Mine's about 12cm

I think if someone was to breed them here there would be a pretty decent market for them. Lots of people want these fish but just cant afford the price tag of the imported ones. Locally bred would be a lot cheaper and look at the comments you have had about your nugget on here, people love them, so i dont think it would be a hard fish to sell.

I read about some guy that bred them by accident ( lucky #@*%) but cant remember what size they were. I have heard that a rough guide for fancy plecs is that they will breed at around half or just over half of their max size. So if nuggets max out about 30cm maybe 15cm or so, just a guess. Males have the spines though and every fish i have seen in pics with spines looks huge. Just a bunch of thoughts really haha. Goodluck with it mate :D

hey luke, hes looking very good, i did a bit of research on him when we had him and from what i could find he maxs out between 22 and 28cm,

i had a guy come into the shop about 4times and him and hi wife both said at different times that they used to breed them in the early 90s but when he took them to QUOTE "a big fish shop in auckland" but they only gave him 20-30$ ech so he didnt bother raising anymore bubbers arg i mean FRY

the guy told me that he was a male but couldnt find any thing to back that up.

i second that. yet to be any real recording of breeding these fish. all rumors and one report by Larry Vires with out pics.

not only is it hard to find them at a decent size to try and breed, they're very territorial especially to their own kind. thats why u never see more than one keep in the same tank.

Interesting...thanks for that. Does anyone know exactly how territorial they get? Or can everyone only afford one at best? :)

this is what planetcatfish has to say under their catelog

Gold nuggets are territorial to other bottom dwellers and downright vicious to other gold nuggets. This stems from a desire to find and defend the best spawning cave, so take this into account if you plan to introduce these fish into a catfish tank. They do well in a community environment that fits their other requirements. Be careful with adult fish, they can kill each other in a crowded space.
