long journey carry setup for fish

if you have an animates near you just ask them if you can have the polystyrene boxes their fish come in. Also I know that the $2 shop (or similar) has had heat pads, at least in christchurch. You just remove them from their pack and contact with air causes them to heat up, they last for about 15-20 hours, so that should give you plenty of time. These pads are similar to the ones that fish are shipped with originally. Hope this helps .

With the catfish,

due to their spikes and vigour.

To bag them,

use a small amount of water.

Double bagged.

Then get a larger bag,

line it with several layers of newspaper,

then put the other bags, fish and water into this.

6 hours isn't that long for a fish to travel.

Summer time too

In summer if you are travelling during the day its more important not to get the fish too hot. Just use a standard poly-box and they will be ok.

As Alan says, double bag catfish. Just to add a bit, don't inflate the inner bag too much. Inflate the outer bag with a light pressure. If the fish punctures the inner bag it will lessen the amount of water that leaks out between the layers.

I'm not sure about other locations, but at particular times of the week the Pak n Save fresh fish departments here in Hammy will have good sized polyboxes for sale at $2 each. So may be worthwhile checking with your supermarkets if you need polyboxes.
