bulldogod
Im changing from 2 foot tank to a 4 foot one and not to sure how to go about cycling the new tank???Is it alrite to just put the old filter and stones from old tank into the new one and then put fish in or do I have to wait before putting fish in????
ryanjury
I would put some of the water in probably all of the water out of 2ft in the 4ft. Chuck the filter and heater and fish in, and then slowly fill the tank up... IMO theres no need to move the gravel and that there should be sufficient bacteria in your filter to handle the load that was in your 2ft just add new fish gradually so it can cope Thats what I do anyway I just leave a filter running on a stocked tank and then move it over with new water and chuck the fish in.. Or take half the media out of an existing tanks filter..
Wok
Hi bulldog... yep that is what I would do. Transfer all the stuff from the old into the new and go on as per normal. It would be like you did a big water change.
herefishiefishie
Some types of gravel are good at breeding bacteria too. So it may help. Depends on what type, how deep the gravel bed is... Frenchy
Caryl
If you are wanting gravel to remain in the smaller tank I would just change the filter over plus the water. Top up bigger tank then, making sure temps and pH are same swap the fish over. Since it is the same filter, it will have the right number of bacteria for the fish, even if they are in a bigger tank. I would make sure the tank was settled for a week or two before adding new fish though.
herefishiefishie
What if the filter in the 2 footer is only holding 30% of the bacteria, eg; gravel is holding 60%, free floating 10%? Some filters don't breed much in the way of bacteria at all. As said above, keep a close eye on your water quality for a few weeks. i wouldn't add anything new for a couple of weeks either. And avoid the temptation to add a heap of fish too. Frenchy
Caryl
We should've checked what sort of filter it is 8)

herefishiefishie
Is the foam in the internal a coarse type{as in very small particles can pass through} or is it of a fine/compact type. {as in catches very small particles}?
