nor_wester
My young Oscars have developed and what I treated as Whitespot, but now for some reason it appears their fins are feathering away. Could this be fin rot? If so what can I get, or do to treat them? :-?

fishboi
make sure the tank water is really really clean. u can use both white spot and melafix at the same time. but melafix by itself should do the trick hope it gets better soon
sharn
are you sure they havent just torn themselves up being silly guys? if it is fin rot you will first want to treat for that then use melafix to help heal the remaining tears. no chance of posting some pics of them and their fins? Freakyfish
Getting their fins torn away isnt always fin rot and quite alot of the time its just a bacterial infection from the white spot and not fin rot All your white spot medications will treat bacterial and fungal infections at the same time as treating the white spot so i would just use the white spot remedy Brad

nor_wester
MORE INFO... Hey Folks, I have recently had a whitespot problem in a small tank with 3 young Oscars in. I treated them with melafix as advised in an earlier posting, but things seem to be going wrong on the smallest one. the fins appeared to go a black / grey colour a few days after treatment, now the side fins appear to have feathered away. Have I done something wrong, or is it just the course of treatment taking & doing it's thing. (ps will try and get a pic posted)
sharn
as far as i know melafix doesnt fix whitespot, just helps the regeneratioin of scales, fins etc. if you are wanting to use natural methods you can do the 'salt and heat' method which is a bit slower than meds. otherwise grab some white spot cure or something like that and use the dose reccomended, only do a half dose if you have plecos/other scaleless fish in the tank. up the temp in both cases to around 28 as that will speed the life cycle up.
