chimera
i dont believe you need light, that will just help the algae? i think 4-6 weeks should be enough time. i got the diatom bloom too when i dumped sand in, just waited and in time it went. still, will be curing the sand prior to putting it in next time. cookie extreme
you would have to skim it as well to remove the algae (and in this way the silicates) otherwise the silicates used by the algae will stay in the system and will be reused over and over again. tel
or big water changes?
cookie extreme
that would work as well.
reef
Water change is not going to help much if you use NSW, it is loaded with silicate acid.
Duke
So Reef if you use NSW in your tank the problem will never go away?
reef
Not too sure if it goes away, however every time i used NSW i would always get the diatoms . It would go away however after another change it would come back.

puttputt
you and your vodka, much better in a cosmopolitan!
reef
Vodka, when will people listen.... Vodka will work however why add the problem to a tank and then try to remove the the diatoms. Overuse of vodka can also be a problem as it feeds all bacteria including the bad ones. can cause bacteria in fish also.
Fay
can cause bacteria in fish also. So I have started bio digest I should stop vodka then?

suphew
I have never stopped vodka so why have i got a big cyno problem in the cube? I gave up on vodka, was double dosing for months and it made no difference to my cyno problem. Since cyno is a bacteria wouldn't the vodka just feed it as well???
