  1. Where is the best place to buy fish in Welly?? Any proper fish shops around?? Looking for a nice betta and a couple of other tank mates :-)
  2. That's a great idea, I'll get my husband onto it!
  3. Thanks for that :-) I got it slightly wrong, AR126. Yup, it's built in wet/dry sort of set up, and it trickles in from the back. Here's a pic of him:
  4. I have my new boy in my AR128 tank as a feature in the lounge. Only thing is that now he's in there I'm thinking the current from the filter might be too strong for him?? Probably should have thought about it earlier and put and undergravel filter in instead, but I was wonder about getting a small internal filter instead of using the built in filter that it making quite a bit of current? Does anyone have any suggestions for a cheapish alternative, or do you think he'll be fine as-is? He does have a rock cave he can go into and behind the powerhead is also calm, but I'd like to see him out and about. He does seem happy, but I don't want that to change, so suggestions greatly appreciated!! :-)
  5. Thank u! :-) Yeah I'd really like to try breeding him at some point! :bounce:
  6. Thanks SamH! How did you do that? :-D Yeah, his gills are black, very cool! :-) A Cambodian CT you say? That's neat  Haha, yes a much better pic ;-) Yup, he's settled in well. He's really lovely, very friendly and loves to show off!
  7. I got a pretty boy for my community tank... I can't post photos in here, but put up a photo in the FB group Siamese Fighters NZ: http://www.facebook.com/groups/150909571710093/ One day would love to breed them
  8. Oh okay, thank you! :-) Whereabouts is that??
  9. That's true... but half the fun will be looking & choosing on the day hehe! ;-)
  10. Yes, I agree about a lot being rubbish :-? When we were in the South Island we had a stunning blue boy, he was amazing! I think we got him from Organism in ChCh, can't quite remember. But seeing the plainer ones around now, they just don't compare so we haven't had any for ages! I love the black & green ones I saw on the photo thread on here, they're brilliant! Two weeks until we can get to HFF, hope they're still there!!! Were they at Albany or Mt Roskill??
  11. I'm guessing Hollywood would be the best?? But I also suppose you have to be there on the day they come in, yeah? Planning a trip up to Auckland in a couple of weeks, I'd love to get a nice fighter, there are some AMAZING pics on here!!!

    Algae problem

Yes, exactly the same as that, just a bit more green! It isn't easily removed though, you can't just wipe it off :-?

    Algae problem

Hi all, I was wondering if you could give some suggestions to clear up some algae. I have a pic but can't make it appear on here :-? It is very dark green, almost black or very dark brown in places. It seems to stay short, about 3-4cm, and is growing in small clumps on everything - walls, gravel, logs, plants. The clumps are very dense and feathery/velvety to look at. From the description we were sold some algovec by one shop, he said it was the only thing that would fix it, but it hasn't worked. My husband took the anchor ornament out and cleaned it down with boiling water which worked to kill the algae on there for a time, but of course once put back in the tank, it comes back. It turned red/brown when the boiling water was put on it. We have a couple of smaller tanks that we thought we could set up and put the fish in while we try to eliminate it. Any suggestions would be great! :-)
  14. Okay, yup that makes sense about not bothering with two UV tubes. Heat emitters - are the ceramic 'bulbs' better than normal spotlight type heat bulbs? Are infrared bulbs a good option to put on a thermostat so they can be on during the night too?
  15. We are getting our first beardie. His tank is all ready for him after prolonged scrolling through many photos of beardie setups! :-D Last thing is the lights. We have a double lighthood from one of the fish tanks which we are going to use. Would we be best to get two UVA/UVB tubes, or are there other better options eg one UVB and one of something else? Also what wattage heat/basking bulb is best? How many hours a day would you normally run the basking lamps? And during the night do you need to use a heat pad? Thanks in advance! :-)
  16. Hi all, Just checking - does HFF Mt Roskill branch stock all the reptile supplies - heat lamps, UVB tubes, live food etc?? I know Albany does, so I'm guessing Mt Roskill does too - just thought I better make sure before I go up on the weekend! :-) Thanks! :-)
  17. Thanks everyone for your replies :-) The other fish are all happy as, looking fantastic, that's why I couldn't understand why we'd gone from 16 down to 10 in a couple of days! I think it is overnight that they're going, we see no evidence of them being chased/attacked during the day... I wonder if it could be the zebra loaches?? In saying that, one of the angels has been bullying the other two a bit, so maybe it's him?? :-? Will try leaving the light on and see if that works... otherwise will have to find new homes for the angels which would be a shame, they look great in there!
  18. Hi all, Help please! I had 16 blue neon tetras... then last night there were 10, now this morning there were 7!!! My husband didn't believe me until he found a dead one missing it's head What I would like to know, is who would be doing that?? We do have three fairly decent sized angels, but I've never experienced them doing that before! Also two yellow rasboras and two zebra loaches, four black neons and a couple of cories. But these have all been in there for ages with no problems at all. The only new fish are three kuhli loaches and a baby marbled algae eater - neither of which I would think would do such a thing! :-? Interestingly there are emerald eye tetras that are smaller than the neons, and they haven't been eaten?? Any ideas??
  19. Hi We got a lone Corydoras similis recently from a fish shop, hadn't seen them round much before that. I really like him, would love to get him some friends. Does anyone know where I could get any more??
  20. I hope this isn't considered too off topic, but I was wondering re corys, can they breed in pairs or must you have a group?? Just that all the info I've found so far says 6 is best
  21. To be honest I had completely forgotten about it... now I can't remember my password :-(
