    Heat-fan?

Thanks Hummingbird...how are you? I used to change my water every second week but lately (except recently!) I try to do so every week especially since its summer. Maybe with all this heat I should be testing more often do you think? Also, because of the heat can I turn my lights off earlier, I'm more concerned about the 10 gallon that has the incadescent lights? That now has 2 goldfish & 2 ottos.

    Heat-fan?

Thanks suphew I thought you were not supposed to put tanks in a draft because it would hurt the fish...real dumb moment, again :-? :-? Yup, I have noticed that the water evaporates more...but I just keep topping it up,no time frame just when I see it going down, is this ok?
  3. Penejane...did you get a response to this somewhere else? I was going to ask about the sailfin mollies (hmm...may have somewhere else :-? ). Did you get any? Do you know if there are more than one kind? What I mean is I've seen fish called mollies with lytretail (darn can't spell), tails are curved, if you know what I mean! They also had a fairly long dorsal (top fin?). I have also seen fish called "sailfin" mollies that have a different tail but a "high" fin on top. Oh dear, not doing a good job at describing these, sorry :-?
  4. Tank with goldfish gets a tad warmer than usual due to hot summer. In an emergency I put ice cubes in bag and float them. Now, I usually keep the fan on the tank. I don't understand though...if you are not supposed to put your tank in a draft...how come putting a fan on it doesn't hurt?
  5. I was wondering about peas & goldfish mustcooktea, questions: - how many peas? - they eat just the inside of pea, not shell, right? - how often do they get peas? - will peas harm my ottos? - do you give peas as a "treat" or do you substitute the peas for a meal? :-? I think that covers it for now! How many goldfish do you have mustcooktea & what kind?
  6. The gravel is darker than it looks in the pics. They didn't have much to pick from another lighter blue, red, green, white, multicolor and an almost beige color. I was told that the beige would always look dirty...soooooooo  Yah...I agree...I need a lesson in aquascaping (right word?). My 10 gallon has incadescent lights. The 29 gallon has one florescent. I like it but I find its not bright enough...no, maybe that's not the best way to describe it...more like, doesn't light all of the tank, sorry not explaining very well  Love the fact that it doesn't heat up the tank like the incadescents!
  7. Hmmm....anybody out there have calico fantails...do they change color? This is Slim...I don't understand...just looking at him he looks orange and white...but in the pic...colors look different...could it be reflections & such? Slim & Jim
  8. Hi mustcooktea Yup...that's Slim's tail. I will try to get better pics of him and Jim. Puff (calico fantail)...well, I don't know still looking for more info on them. Are they supposed to change colors?
  9. Will try to get better pics soon Calico fantail...right? Would like to introduce you to Slim & Jim Jim..can't see his colors Slim...white bottom, pretty orange on rest of him...he didn't want to pose, but if you look closely...he is waving  Not much of a variety here for backgrounds, I didn't want to use the same for this tank so used the all blue. But, I am wondering...how do you think a bubble wall would look? May or may not try it.
  10. Watch your fish...that way you will get to know their look, behavior, etc. that way you will be more likely to tell if something is not right. Feeding time is a good time to check them out plus you will see if they are eating? Not eating? Test kits: ammonia, pH, nitrites, & nitrates (I don't have the nitrate yet). debs01...did you put styrofoam under your tank? HEY ALAN, I still remember
  11. There is a lot here on cycling and setting up a new tank. Something I found real helpful for a newbie (was recommened here) was to get test kits. This way we can keep an eye on the water's condition (e.g. ammonia too high)...water change 8) I had tropicals mixed with 1 goldfish...which was a no-no. But now I have just a goldfish & 2 otto's in 10L... ...oh dear, I did buy another goldfish last night  Water that has cholorine or choloramine (maybe spelled wrong  ) must be left to sit for 24 hours. These things are dangerous for fish.

    Ich?

Thank you Sorry so late with the thanks. Anyway, had to go away in a rush...when I came back...no spots on goldfish! I was concerned because I recognized it the first time it happened...but this was different as only the 2 spots and didn't seem to be getting any worse. When he had it the first time, I treated right away. Therefore, I wasn't sure how long it would take to spread if it was ich! Oh shoot...hope that makes sense :-?

    Hi all,

Hi Debs01! I'm new too...bought my first tank in March. Three kids as well...27, 23, 20 (1 girl youngest). I have 2 tanks 10 gallon and 110L. I would be lost if not for the people here...can't say enough good things about them But...I must warn you...this hobby is addictive   Take care!
  14. Hi Tiden! This site is fantastic ... but sounds like you have quite a bit of knowledge yourself Hmmm...someone else to seek help from.... People are great here...would be lost without them. Take care and happy...fishing :-?
  15. How do you vacuum when you have sand in tank? HI SHELLEY...how are you?

    Otto questions?

Thanks Snowman! I have to do more reading about the otto's but so far I haven't come across anything that says if they are scaleless or not. Once before...congratulations    When I cleaned my tanks last night, I did clean the glass but left ornaments alone to make sure I wasn't taking all the algae away, don't want to starve my Oscar & Felix! I haven't used the wafers since...ummm....the first week, and they seem to be getting along just fine.
  17. Hi Jude! How are you? Thanks for asking about my friend (see off topic jude), we had to go back to Halifax last Sunday by ambulance  I was wondering about the mollies because the first time I tried them (on advice of dept. store) they hassled my goldfish like crazy...had to get rid of them. I've seen the sailfin mollies but wasn't sure if I could put them in my 29 gallon or not. My 10 gallon only has Sam (goldfish) and a new calico fantail, oh & the 2 otto's. The 29 gallon only has tropicals in it so that's why I was wondering about the sailfin mollies. How are your fishies doing? Hi Niloc! Does your friend just have the 1 sailfin mollie? I haven't had time lately to read up on them but will do so. I was told that they might eat the tetra's...has your friend had any trouble in that regard? Thank you folks!
  18. Thanks Bluetom & Caryl! Sorry didn't answer sooner...had to go back to Halifax again! Due to circumstances...my tanks haven't had a water change in 3 WEEKS...I just got home so will be going to get bottled water so I can do changes before anything else happens :-? I'll do the water changes then maybe go see if I can get more fish. Thanks again for the advice. What about sailfin (right name I think) mollies?

    Ich?

When I first got my tank, my goldfish had ich (result from putting in mollies as was recommended by store, only to have them hassle goldfish). I was able to recognize it right away, looked like fin salted. Now, he has one white spot on his tail fin & one spot on his anal fin. It has been like this for 3 days now. No other spots. If this as ich, wouldn't he have more on him? I don't want to treat if I there is no need. One time before he had a similar white spot on his tail fin and it just went away. What do you think?????
  20. Hi all 110L: 2 male guppies 1 male red wag platy 3 neons m/f? 3 black neons m/f? Snowman...I think you recommended more platies & neons. Is there anything else I can add? I can't find the post where I asked before...so forgive me if I'm repeating myself  Platies & guppies...can I add more males, don't want females if I don't have too? Thanks folks, Dolorosa Oh...just on another note  Went to the dept. store that sells fish yesterday...hoping to get another goldfish. DISGUSTING...there was one poor fish, I'm not sure of the name...white, red cap, supposed to be fantail I think...looked as if half the fish was GONE...poor little guy was still alive nose down and just his...um...front fins left. So, go to the next tank...I think it was a calico fantail...I think I got the name right...anyway... All the other fish in tank seemed to be fine...and he was the most active. Until I watched for a while & realized he was just swimming up and down with the right side facing out...when he did turn...his eye was all black and bigger...also looked liked a sore spot behind eye in front of gill. Needless to say...I didn't get a fish. Doing water changes tomorrow & hope to get to pet store on Monday. SORRY FOR SO LONG A POST :-?
  21. Uh...deeveus...the pic that you've called "feeding"...could you explain what's being seen there. Is that an anemone (sorry if spelled wrong)? Is that is what's being eaten? What do cray eat? The round flat objects...what are they? just trying to understand
  22. Here is a pic of my filter...sorry...still don't understand
  23. Beautiful pics! Love those blue guppies Penejane The orange/white guppy...I have one similar to it!
  24. All I can say Phillz is....WOW!
