  1. Thanks Caryl I've reduced how much I'm giving my fish, not that I think I'm starving them but was wondering how you would know if they weren't getting enough. From everything you read, it seems overfeeding is more of a problem.
  2. He didn't make it Caryl, when I took him out his tail fin...how to explain? His tail fin was yellow and when I took him out it almost looked like it was "painted" and the "paint" was coming off. About half way up the tail, was like it lost its color so to speak. Ever hear of that. Of course, only got him yesterday and I can usual count on a death
  3. now he seems to be spending alot of time at the top of the tank
  4. Melanie...sorry to hear about your fish I'm only new to this and have lost...more than one tetra. Any that I've lost so far have always been new to the tank. How long was your tank running before you put them in? Are they the only fish you have? Did you notice anything else different...color, fin condition? I'm just trying to get you going with more information so those with more experience can offer advice as to what may have happened. Oh...and just because you lost one...doesn't necessarily mean the others will die as well. Sorry, just read another post you put here...so people do know your set up...sorry...didn't realize you were the same person!
  5. modern angel...what part of Canada does does your Dad live? Snowman...you'd get along great with my sons. They're into drag racing. Now, its only a small thing here not like you'd see in big cities and such. But they love it. Craig (oldest) opened a performance shop...umm...2 years ago... I think 2! They only have the races 4 or 5 times a year. He keeps telling his girlfriend that the baby CANNOT be born when races are on   VAPO: Poor Shannon ...don't you see how she NEEDS a pussycat!
  6. I've seen a lot about overfeeding the fish. What about underfeeding? Are there certain things to watch for to indicate that they are being underfed? I mean how would you know behaviour? or what? Aside from them lifting the lid on the tank and screaming...more food woman
  7. One of the new guppies I bought yesterday seemed to be fine last night. Just fed them and noticed this one wasn't eating. On closer inspection, his tail fin and one of his pectoral fins looks as if they have been nipped. I really don't remember them looking like that last night. He's not swimming like he was and...hmmm how to describe...it's like his tail and the part attached to it...sorry not explaining good...seem to droop down sometimes! Will the fins grow back? The "droopy" thing...is that sign of something serious? Do you think he will die? ANY AND ALL OPINIONS, SUGGESTIONS, ETC....will be appreciated Oh...I also added the aquarium salt last night...could this have anything to do with it????
  8. Yup...still having fun

    Hi from Welly

Welcome Shannon...and greetings from Cape Breton! As you see...this place is GRRRREAT...I'm always learning from the people here...they've been so kind and patient and willing to help! Take care, Dolorosa
  10. Bottled water for now...remember I only have 2 small tanks...and I'm not smoking as much as I used to...trying to quit! Plus I really do have to remember to call the water department about the water. Sydney was always known for bad water. But I didn't mind it till recently, the white cloud and the :-? taste! About the salt, was at the dept. store today. The manager of the fishie dept. was there. She told me that all there tanks have salt in them. She recommended 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons of water every 3-4 months, does this sound right? She said to put it in with my goldfish as well. I also did water change in the 29 gallon tonight...tested the water later...ammonia going down...not quite .25...but not 0. This time Bill all I did was vacuum some water off, no vacuuming or touching gravel at all. Will do the same for the next few days as needed to get the ammonia down. I forget  approximately how long for a 29 gallon to cycle? Sorry so long a post...but...well...you see...IT'S FNZAS FAULT!...if you folks weren't so darn good
  11. Oh...no...never...oh...oh I do not have a green thumb at all! I do not have any real plants in my tanks. Not ready for that yet. The ones I kill are just household plants over the years. My ex used to say I was so bad that I killed artificial plants  But I really like those ambulia you have...maybe someday I would love to try something like that...that is if I can even get them here! Still working on getting used to having fish and learning about them. But when I see tanks like yours ...makes me think that someday I may try!
  12. This one shocks me Bill...I really thought that once a month you were supposed to give the gravel a really good vacuum, that is why I was doing it! When doing the weekly change I try not to disturb too much of anything but sometimes  I do. I do stress (as Caryl has mentioned ). You folks are right though if I don't stop stressing over EVERYTHING then I will not enjoy my fishies anymore, and I don't want that to happen. I have to learn to calm down  Is three how I check two  So just take thinks out and do the vinegar test then. I don't use the tap water I use bottled water at present. Our water is horrible and has been "white" lately...mental note...call water department! Anyway, have to go get ready for a wedding. Maybe this will take some stress away THANK YOU THANK YOU
  13. Canada...before metric...was imperial gallon. I'm just from the old school and cannot get used to the metric  Temp is about the only thing I don't mind doing in metric! Other than that..I'm fine...
  14. Uhhh...Bill...anybody...do I need to change anything (see previous thread) and what about the ammonia?

    Homemade food

Ira...amazing pic...beautiful, but what is it?
  17. Shelley, don't all gouramis have the long...umm...I think they're called tentacles maybe...one on top and one on bottom??? I thought fin nippers would nip at those as well?????
  18. I have neons and my pH runs from 7.2 and 7.6. What I have read on the net so far though indicates they prefer 7. But those with more experience will tell you more.
  19. Thanks for telling me plant name. Are the ambulia a lot of care? So, if I'm understanding correctly...they just keep multiplying???? I love the look of them...I have an artificial plant that kinda looks like that! I don't have real plants in my tanks since I've always killed any plant I've had
  20. YOU KEEP YOUR MUM & DAD IN A TANK ...   ...oh, you mean the b/n mum & dad...jk
  21. Uh...what do you put on your roads in the winter...they use salt & sand here! A little off topic...but I'm not only getting to know you folks but a bit about New Zealand
  22. What are the fake corals...the green & orange...that I thought were just artificial plants????
  23. I have no idea what all this means :-? Heck...I'm still used to inches...gallons...don't have a clue with the metric  My 10 gallon (38L read on box  ) is bigger than his tank right? I could not imagine 17 fish in my 10 gallon
