    Greetings

Pardon the ignorance, but could someone please explain what the numbers mean when your talking about angelfish?

    Eheim filters

Not sure sorry Damo but was thinking about doing the same thing for an eheim 2324 so any info you get will be excellent! What site have you found?

    Hi

Welcome DG. Im sorry I cant offer any reason for the losses as I am not experienced enough to offer advice but I hope you get it sorted. Im sure there will be someone who can help you here as there is no shortage of experience and knowledge and its a great learning tool. Good luck.

    Greetings

Welcome Raven and an extra welcome to the very small southern contingent of the forum, me and Penejane as far as I know! I'm from Gore but have bought all my tropical stuff from your lfs East Road Pets. Was in there on sunday and wondered if you have seen the giant breeding comets they stock? Is this what you have in your outdoor pond? They are very cool, and make my little black fantail/nymph (not sure if there is a difference?) look very insignificant!
  6. Hey everyone, Have just discovered nor'wester's post on transporting fish. Would like to find out how I can purchase fish outside of my region and ship them to Southland. Our LFS is kind of limited although Im sure they would order in for me, but their prices can be kind of hefty eg. $120 for juvenile discus (and thats per fish, not for a breeding pair etc) which apparently is very expensive. They are not 24 carat fish! Not sure where to start in regards to LFS in the south island as I would prefer some info from you guys that have purchased fish from quality outlets, as opposed to buying from a non-reputable business. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
  7. Thanks for the advice everyone. Have bought the 4footer, thanks Pomereef! Would appreciate some knowledge on filters etc to run in a tank this size. I run an Eheim 2215 in my 3foot and a smallish (200w) heater, with undergravel filters also. Am not too worried about the u/g in the new tank but would like info regarding the filter system and the heaters. Would twin heaters be more effective and efficient? Would quite like to stick with the Eheim range as I have only heard good things about them.
  8. I've got the bug! I'm still relatively new to this, having only been keeping tropicals for about 6mths, but I'm contemplating purchasing a beautiful 4 foot tank and would like suggestions on: inhabitants, plants and how to decorate it.
  9. I agree that this forum in "undernourished" as I myself am guilty of just discovering it! I have a few plants growing in my tank, if you would call it growing. Please dont ask me what types they are as I have no idea. I would love a densely planted tank for my babies to hide in and to cover my tank equipment. I am about to mix some artificial plants with my live ones and see how it looks.

    Bumblebee Gobys

Thanks for the info. I found them in one of my books in the end. They are loving life today and cruising all around the tank. Not sure what to do at feeding time tho, as all material said they take only live food?
  11. Congratulations on the baby Penejane and yay for your fish! I had a few issues with my tank about four weeks into it. I got carried away and added to many fish to fast and lost about 7 all up (not including the 20odd neons that my delightful pictus was dining on at nite!) but now its all under control and fish and tank very healthy. Bought some bumblebee gobys, rummynose tetras and another clown loach yesterday at East Road. Was a bit disappointed at their selection, its usually really good. The last two times Ive been in there, they havent had much to choose from. They get a new shipment of fish every friday, but you wouldnt think it! I am about to get my first batch of fry in the next few weeks from mum guppy and then another guppy is due in about a month or so. Not sure what to do with the fry as I have no nursery tank and at this stage Im not too worried if they do become fodder! I have a floating breeding trap so I get to them in time I'll to do the right thing!
  12. Can anyone tell me the quirks, habits etc of these little cuties?
  13. Hi Warren, hows it going. I lived in Dunedin for a year in 2000 as a bum student! Where abouts did you move from? How long did it take you to adjust to Otagos inclement weather patterns! Penejane and I both bought our tanks from East Road Pets in Invercargill, one of very few LFS in town. They supplied the gravel for my 3footer as part of a package deal, so I assume they source it from Southland Sand and Gravel, and not that I have much experience or knowledge of aquarium gravel but I like it. Its got a lovely "realistic environment" colour and the particle size is ideal. What sort of tank have you got?
  14. Looks like its just us down here Penejane! Hows everything with the tank and residents going? oh and the baby! How long to go now?
  15. Am just new to the forum and hobby and I would like to enquire whether there is a Southland Aquarist Club or not?
  16. Thanks guys. I thought that might be the case. I think it would be best for all involved if I held off till I can provide a species tank for the angels, as I'm quite attached to my guppies and neons! I know that angels grow to be quite large so I would appreciate some advice on the size of tank to look at for them. I am kind of taken with the vertical cylindrical tanks but realise that they are a pain to get to the bottom of, especially when your as short as I am! But they do have an awesome look to them. Any suggestion ppl?
  17. I have a community tank size 180litres and would dearly love to have angels. I currently have neons, guppies, mollies, platties, sharks, gouramis, clown loach, bristlenose, a ram, cocho blues, and swordtails (all male). Someone please tell me honestly, can I have angels in this tank or would it be better for all involved to have them in a species tank? Any suggestions are welcomed and reasonings for appreciated. I would like a species tank later on when my experience and knowledge (and finances!) allow, but if I don't have to put angels in it, there are many other species I would like to try. Thanks
  18. So nice of everyone! Having flicked through a couple of the sections in this site I have already picked up a lot of new and helpful info from the pro's! Penejane, congrats on the baby. I am turning 24 on Wednesday. How are things going with your tank?
  19. Its a very small world! Not the most exciting place but I kinda like it. I dont go out anymore to experience anything else coz Im always broke thanks to my fish!
  20. Thanks Alan. Its all very exciting to get into this hobby and its great to have access to so much knowledge thru a site like this. So much experience and so many people willing to share and in laymans terms!
  21. Hi Penejane! It looks like we are in the same boat, and area! Im from Gore but have bought my whole tropical setup from East Road Pets. I bought a 3foot 180litre tank from them about 8 weeks ago. My friends were given a beatiful big Rimu tank for a wedding present and it hooked me! It hasnt been smoothsailing for me though. My tank has just cycled but it took a while. I have lost a few fish which gutted me but I dealt with it. Was very disheartened, but none so much as returning home tonight to find my fighter and my gorgeous pictus both dead. So I threw my toys right out of the cot and did a big water change. (Under instruction of course) I have a community tank with guppies (and yes they are choice, yet very understated) platys, neons, mollys, swordtails, two dwarf gouramis( gourami plural??) bristlenoses, cocho blues, a serpae, a ram, red tailed black sharks, and a partridge in a pear tree that Im teaching to swim! It is addictive, but expensive. Im also new to this site, first time tonight so I extend my welcome to you, and hello to all the other members
