  1. try a heavily planted tank with a puffer you can use the plants as they take over to put in the cichlid tank for a bit of entertainment and variety to their diet
  2. you are right there graeme, i had him in the community tank, big mistake, he took out about 6 fish, left razor like slashes in their bellys i think oscar will be sad he has gone
  3. i freeze it straight from the supermarket then grate it, little grater for the little fish, cheese grater for the big fish, seems to work ok
  4. the move from Tauranga to Wellington was sucessful due to a fatal car accident i missed the truck he was suposed to go on and sent him courier post, they were quite reasonably priced he was sent in a chilly bin, with his photo on it and a few wee comments written on it like " i am alive, please keep me that way" it cost $12 im willing to take on a few unwanted larger fish that are too far away from mystic, the 6 ft swimming pool still needs a bit more stock
  5. the tank is 1200-450-450, looks rather bare as it is
  6. he is a puffer fish of some type, i hope this photo is better
  7. I found this guy in rotorua and did the impulse buy thing, thoughts of putting him in with the community cichlids. Have since found out its not a good idea. He is going to his new mummy tomorrow ( mystic ) thank you mystic, im sure you will enjoy having him
  8. i am now thinking of trying to get a pair of white cons and see if that is the answer. maybe half the tank a pair
  9. ive got a couple of kulie loaches in the community tank, when i first got them travis hit the roof "what the *#*+ are you doing bringing snakes into the house", being an auzzie he has a thing about snakes, now they are his favorite, they seem to play all the time and must be quite secure in the tank as they are usally out a lot during the day. they seem to be quite hardy as they have suvived most of my ignorant errors in keeping fish, including a 5 hour streach on the footpath in the sun after taking the log out of the tank while i changed the gravel, and 2 weeks in a bucket of cold water while the tank was treated with stuff to kill a disease. good luck with your kulies am sure you will get hours of enjoyment from them
  10. this poor little fella kicked on to the big water above a while ago, he was quite the little star, always posing for the camera
  11. im trying to post some photos so i appologise if im wasting your time
  12. i got a large sheet of 40mm from carters for the new tank, i think it cost $10
  13. well the cons have an even bigger batch of little criminals this spawn, today was the first time they have been out of hiding, has to be hundreds of the little buggers maximum security is a 1200-450-450 tank, it looks very empty with just the pair of cons in it, i have a sailfin plec in there , but he will be moved to the community cichlid tank once there is some algee growth and it has aged a little. What will suvive in there with the cons, i really need some help on this one :-? :-? :-? :-?
  14. was suposed to start at 2 but now its 12.30 im going to miss it
  15. do they have another piece of that wood, i need a large piece for the 6ft tank the one you have is like what i want
  16. i have a pair of them, i dont find them aggro, although they can be a bit messy, they pretty much leave their tank mates alone, they are in a community cichlid tank
  17. Jude, i dont know if there is a difference, i feed goldfish flakes, tropical flakes, ox heart, brine shrimp, cichlid sticks, and plant chips, occasionally the fish get frozen blood worms or the garden variety earth worm, i guess if the goldfish flakes are lacking in something i make it up with the rest, i hate the same thing for tea two nights in a row, i guess the fish like a bit of variety as well
  18. sorry to hear of your loss, it was a nice oscar
  19. after a number of very stressful sleepless nights, the tank is in the house and the cichlids have a new home, they had to learn a few new skills, like how to swim, decompression stops before hitting the surface ( not sure if their using padi or ssi tables). i was expecting a dose of the cichlid sulks but they all seem to be happy, although a little lost. going from a 380ltr tank to a 1480ltr tank is a bit of a change for them. there has been no teritory wars at this stage, but its early days yet. any suggestions for additions are welcomed
  20. im going to be working, can someone burn it to disc for me
  21. The new cichlid tank is under way, it is being constructed in auckland and will be trucked to tauranga on friday( its going to be a long week) the dimentions are 6 ft - 3 ft - 3 ft, or for those of you who are better with metrics 1800-900-900 or close to it the stand was finished today, timber framing with a rimu facing, when it went inside it looked like a single bed! got a couple of photos but will have to wait to post them it is going to look awesome
  22. When was your last waterchange, did your water come from the town supply, if works were done on waterpipes chlorine tablets would have been put in the lines, is that a possibility
  23.      my prized green terror is a jeweled cichlid do i ever feel stupid, help on his temperment would be nice though
  24. welcome treehugga, my cichlid addiction is getting more seroius, in need of about 8 more tanks, im sure we will be in contact
  25. My 2 keyholes deserve every thing they get, they are a pair of undersized makos, they are top fishies in the tank, they are part of the reason i took the convicts out, they were beating the crap out of them.although they are the smallest in the tank by far, i dont think they know that, my guess is that all is happy in there for now
