  1. Sorry to hear of your loss I have 5 gold rams and all my plants still have the lead on them, no problems there. I haven't had mine all that long and they are my first ones, so I can't tell you anything from experience. Do dipsticks measure in ppm? (parts per million?) if so then 20 would be getting up there. If they weren't fully fit that might have pushed them off the edge. I do know that they aren't the hardiest of fish to begin with.
  2. I should have guessed being an Aussie wood. I only got my hands on it because it was left over from a demo day at Carba-Tec. They had a whole heap of trouble importing a container load of untreated timber for the demo and won't be doing it again so I was quite keen to have it as I'll probably never get to work with it again. It's actually quite nice to work with as it has a silky soft feeling when sanded. Ã probably will go for the oil. I started this thread because I wasn't sure how it would react when exposed to damp conditions or how long it would last. THANKS EVERYBODY!!!! Time to get to work again this weekend :bounce: :bounce:
  3. I love the idea I'll have to remember that for when I'm an old and experienced aquarist with a whole lot of time and space something like that would have to involve. Good luck and let us know if you achieve it.
  4. I did some research on several types of tetra's last week because I set up a new tank and needed something to go with my tiger barbs. My recomendation would be to google each type, go to 3 sites of each and note down all the pro's and con's of each, narrow it down to fit to what YOU as a aquarist are trying to achieve. Then go with your gut feeling. As for trying for another tank, get your parents involved (Mum might be easiest) Work on the guilt feeling that getting rid fish is stressful for them and not the best for their health... and so on.
  5. I was finding a small puddle on the floor 3 days in a row, about the size of a dinner plate. After tracking it back turns out out it was only condensation seeping under the cover plate. It was a great excuse to set up the 3 foot tank I had sitting outside though.
  6. More information would be a help but you could try feeding some crushed up peas in case it's gas in the bowels. My Tiger Barbs get a little bloated every now and again because they swallow too much air during their feeding frenzies. Greens help them to pass it out the other end.
  7. Sorry to hear of your loss. I have just gotten my first otto's, From my research it's the acclimatization period that's the most crucial. High oxygen levels and lots of greens are important too. How long did you have him? They also prefer to be in groups.
  8. Iset up a 3' tank 11 days ago using two bedside cabinets as the stand. Maybe you can find some cheap ones at a second hand store. Just make sure they are solid and not made of particle board. The storage space is great for all the gear too.
  9. I've just set up a 3'tank and looked into getting some threadfins but unfortunately they wouldn't fare well with my tiger barbs. In my breeding book it suggests that the baby's need infusoria or powdered fry food for several weeks before they can take newly hatched brine shrimp. Be careful not to allow the water to get polluted because they are very susceptible to ammonia poisoning. They also need high oxygen levels so gentle airation is a must. Provide spawning mops or something like java moss for them to lay amongst. Hope this helps, Good luck.
  10. Nice 8) wonder how many burglars would think of looking in an aquarium.
  11. RIP Flounder Even though Flounder recovered very well and managed to addapt to an almost normal swimming style she has finnaly passed on. A few weeks ago She lost the bottem half of her tail fin, probably to normal roughhousing amongst Tiger Barbs. There was no sign that it was starting to grow back, so I moved her to a hospital tank so that she might have some peace and quiet to recover. Unfortunately the transfer seems to have been too much of a shock to her, even though the water peramaters were exactly the same as the tank she came from.
  12. I clean my tanks with vinager and paper towels, then rinse it well. If I need something stronger I prefer to use Cloudy Ammonia and again Rinse, Rinse, Rinse. It is a very old fashioned cleaner and more natural than most chlorine based cleaners these days. The only disadvantage to it is the smell. Although it clears your nose if you have a cold.
  13. Nice tank Dwalk! 8) What kind of rock is the greenish one?
  14. I think this lady was given him as well, so who knows what kind of life he had. All I really can tell you is that he was treated like a king while he was with me.
  15. Hi Doch Did you mean you oiled the outside of your tank? If so then Alanmin's idea might be an option. I would hate for my top to warp though as it's taken me 9 months to get this far. (I love working with wood but I don't get much time for it at the mo) Or else I might go along with Spoons idea. Sorry to hear about your warped efforts Dwalk. (can I get anyone else's name in here)
  16. No, I was given him by someone who bought some fish of me. He had huge bristles though so he must have been fairly old.
  17. I guess most people would be aware of these things these days, and even if you didn't the bad english should be a giveaway. The people at clearnet hadn't heard of this one yet though so we thought we'd put the word out.

  19. (weird, I never got notified that there were responses and I havn't been around this site for a while) :-? I do have wood in my tank, and I havn't had any losses for a while. My LFS told me that they had had a bad batch because there were other ppl that had complained about it too. I was given a fully grown male with huge bristles and he survived for ages but I think he was at the end of his line and past away 2 weeks ago. My other baby BN is doing well.
  20. As a painter I clean houses before painting regularly, we usually use chlorine or cloudy ammonia. I will always check for ponds before starting from now on, to be honest it's something I had never really considdered before. Sorry for your loss.
  21. Please be advised that this can also be turned around.
  22. I only heard of TB in fish yesterday at my LFS, and since there is no such thing as coincidence it might have been to help you along. What I know is that if it is fish TB then cull the sick ones because if they die and others eat from them they will get it too. There is no cure for it so you have to be fair to the rest. I have only just heard of it though so I have no idea what I would be looking at, you'll have to do some more research on that. On another note: when I had guppies years ago I noticed that I was starting to get deformities from about the 5th generation of inbreeding. Things like bent backs, bulging eyes and deformed fins. Hope this info will help you on your way

Do you mind if I ask what it is used for? In case I ever need to know in the future.
  24. As a treat ants are fine, however too many ants will eventually kill your fish. Here is a piece I found somewhere else on how to catch ants. ants are tasty morsels for your fish. Place a small piece of ripe fruit in a clean jar tipped on its side (a peanut butter or mayonnaise jar works well). Once the fruit is covered with ants, pick it up and add enough water to cover the fruit. Cap the jar and swirl it gently to wash the ants off the fruit. Remove the fruit and pour the water with the ants into the tank. If you are fortunate enough to locate an ant nest, scoop up the eggs and feed those to your fish as well.
