  1. Friju do bred butter species really sell. I could set up a couple of tanks and start breeding. I'm kind is scared what if I end up with a load of fish because the lfs won't buy them you reckon they'll sell on trade me? thats why I've stuck with fish and corals and never really gone into breeding...
  2. Yes I do need to build a good reputation with the LFS. Anyway I was thinking of setting up a basic frag tank for zoanthids. Do u guys think zoanthids in nz are in demand? And would sell for a reasonable price?
  3. Living could you please post a couple of examples of plants in demand? Thamks
  4. Hi aquarist (I don't know where to post this so I post it here):) I've been the hobby for 6 years with my dad and have had goldfish> Low tech planted> bit of Discus> Soft coral reef and now planted tanks again and hopefully getting into discus (on my own) in the near future... throughout the years I've noticed that the hobby drains cash and its hard to even break even with the cost of running and maintaining aquariums... in which part of the aquarium hobby do u guys think theirs money to be "gained"? Ive recently tried to grow plants and trade them with the lfs for almost free but ended up with a "No thanks" and I can't really notice a demand on trademe for plants either but there is a good demand for plastic plants:) So what aspect do u guys think you can make some money (not a living) from in NZ ? Ie. Breeding "x" type of fish... Fragging "x" coral ect...
  5. Unfortunately Shilo I have realized stuff and made a change of plans... so I realized that building everything is going to cost a lot more that buying a tank so I'm going to buy the Aquaone AR80 165Liter with filter and lighting and with cabinet for $600 I will still be making a 3D background but I'm going to make the tank into a full on low tech planted tank with a pair of discus will this work so..can I keep a nice pair of discus in a 165liter planted? I am asking this cause I've never kept a pair in a planted tank or anything more than 80Liter breeding tanks. i will also keep my current 60Liter tank set up without plants and inhabitants just incase they make fry sorry for wasting your time with all the DIY questions I'll keep you update on what I'm gonna do thanks, but sorry again
  6. Thanks Shilo your recommendation looks good how many "625ml pales" of the resin do u think i would need? And also for the front pannel so the rectangle with the smaller rectangle hole will the side of the rectangle hole need to be one whole piece (frame) or can they be separate? if that makes sense I might go out this weekend and have a look at metirals and see if the miter10 guys could cut the wood for me... btw I want a plywood tank as i want to have 3D wall on 2 sides and the matter filter in the corner of them but if I could find a tank in good condition I'll take it but I'll have to paint the two sides... thanks really appericiate your help
  7. I think two of those led flood lights will be suffice for java fern and other low light plants on driftwood I don't plan on making it into a full on planted tank, the substrate will be a thin layer of sand aswell. If they look bad once installed I'll replace them with different lighting since the LEDs only cost about 10 bucks each + shipping. i see the waterproofing of the plywood to be the most expensive part is it? looked around on the web and fiound this https://www.cemix.co.nz/products/waterproofing-products/pond-trough-waterproofer the price isn't listed but is there a cheaper one that you guys know of? thanks
  8. Yup those are the lights that I'm referring to. i found out that building a plywood tank would cost almost as much as you pay for a new glass tank but I will still have a look at the marine ply you mentioned I'm trying to keep the costs down as much as I can on the tank and equipment... I looked at some of the tanks on trademe and they look all scratched up and repaired of cracks I'm not confident in a second hand tank as I don't want it too bust in half. I still want to go with the corner matten filter. Is their a place that you guys might know that sells glass in Hamilton? thanks for the info guys
  9. Hi all so I have decided to MAYBE build a 50gallon 200liter ply wood tank with a single viewing pannel sometime in late 2018... And stock it with 4-5 discus and I've got few questions regarding that so... I will also be following the King of DIY (joey)s guide on building the tank what thickness plywood would I need? what would be the easiest and cheapest way to make a 3D background? what would be the cheapest way to light this tank I want it to be able to grow some low light plants ie moss, fern... What about those 10w floodlights? will a huge sponge corner filter with a sufficient flow rate pump work? Is there anything that I mentioned that won't work? i get excited on the thought of this build so I'm probbly gonna make it happen but who knows... thanks Also I'm only building the tank if I can't find a second hand tank around the same size in good condition.
  10. I'll just get 3 of the smaller verities of cories. I didn't want a bottom dweller because my neons and serpaes hang around the middle to bottom of the tank, but oh well. also will cories jump out of an open top tank? I've read that they dart at the surface thanks for your guys help really appericiate it
  11. Hi all I've got some stocking questions for my 15g planted tank i recently lost one of my 5 neons due to suicide and i have added 3 serpae tetras to the tank so 4 neons and 3 serpaes. what fish would you guys recommend and also something that will eat dead or drying plant matter. i looked into Kuhlie loaches but one side of my tank is dirt with no gravel and the other side is completly corse sand I think they might dig up dirt? simese algae eater too big for tank? bristlenose pleco too big? Cory cats there too expensive like $8-$13 and they aren't solitary as well as they are bottom dwellers like the exisiting tetras. tiger barbs aggressive? And you can't get freshwater shrimps in NZ right? thanks:)
  12. Yup the roots are completly submerged I spray the plants Down with Lukewarm water and that make it pretty humid as well. ill see how this goes for a couple of months thanks
  13. Hi Today I set up clear storage box (which is wider than high) by putting about 15cm or topsoil mixed with dry trace elements and NPK ferts. I placed this elevated near a window sill in my garage And then wet the soil and planted some crypts, hygrophilia, ludwigia, hair grass and micro sword and Rotala. would these plants grow or is there other adjustments I need to make to this set up. thanks
  14. K I'll hook up some LEDs once they have come in thanks
  15. 6 so what colours should I go with 6 cool white? 6nutral white? 3 cool and 3 neutral white ? I prefer a whiter colour but I know neutral white is better for plants. can plant thrive of all cool White? thanks
  16. hi i realized that now my tank Is doing good, that it looks soo much better with opean top no hood. the hood is their for lighting it has 1. 15w t8 for 60L tank. so I have all the stuff expect LEDs for a fixture which I know how to put together. the question is I don't know how many LEDs I need... My tank is a very basic low tech planted so I'm not planing on running pressurised co2 and high lighting. I want as many LEDs thus light without causing algae problems and the need of co2. btw the LEDs need to be 3w (realy bright) to suit the drivers I have. and the tank measures 60:30:30 ish cm thanks any help would be appericiated:)

Thanks Shilo for you info I will do 50% water changes every Saturday and also start feading a pinch every other day. I have some more questions 1.do you think the 5 neons and 3 kuhlie loaches can be housed in tank with its current equipment 2.i brrowed the air pump from a friend so I'll have to return it later so do I need to purchase my own air pump or I was thinking of getting the sun sun 400 liter per hour canister filter (come with a spray bar output)for $40 new on trade me. 3. (Totally unrelated question).. I've got a piece of driftwood from Taupo which I have boiled once and been soaking it out Side for almost 2 months now and it still won't sink. How do I water-lodge this? Drill heaps of small holes.. Boil it more.. ? thanks
  20. Hi im looking to buy some plants with smaller leaves, moss, dwarf sag and carpet plants, Anubis, ferns, Any... i also have a relatively big (40 ish cm) piece or NZ Bog wood which I have been treating for around a month now. I collected it from a farm where they found a peat bog this would be a great piece for a tank with plecos. (It doesn't leak tannins anymore) so let me know if some of you guys are intrested in the bog wood or want to sell some plants if you live in HAMILTON. im also wanting to buy a culture of microworms. thanks
