  1. i'll buy some if are willing to send some to wellington. my lovely red boy needs company, and there are no female fighters in wellington.
  2. in a large tank with lots of plants
  3. please tell me if siamese fighters will happily share a tank with clown loaches and maybe bristlenose.
  4. beautiful fish! where'd you get him from may i ask?
  5. hi there just wondering people's thoughts on filtration for 7 foot tank (1300L0 with at least 3 big catfish (eventually) - currrently 2 gibbies and a plec, plus 2 joselimaianus and a gold nugget and a peppermint plec. considering 2 eheim professional 2s, capacity up to 600L each. or there is a giant eheim, does 1500L, only about $800, but HUGE monster, unlikely to fit in cabinets and could be noisy. the 2 eheim professionals are $700 each from animates. lots of money i know but i'll need good filtration with messy cats.
  6. tried this with my fluval 204 in my other tank - filter ground to a halt.
  7. hi there, just recently bought a beautiful red male betta. had him in my 10 gallon quarantine tank with two catfish, was doing well except that he kept getting stuck around the filter intake! (jebo tank, large round filter intake). he was literally sucked on, wrapped around, and i had to free him and then block access to the filter intake with two nets and driftwood etc. anyway, the plan was to put him (later with several females) in my too-be built 7 foot catfish tank, with probably no other top level fish. but i was reading that they like calm waters, and this tank will have a current, at least at bottom level. i have found he goes all over the tank. the other option was to put him in my 75 gallon planted tank, with maybe just clown loaches, glass catfish and bristlenoses and females. what do you think? really like him, as willing to get rid of my zebra danios and glowlights etc. was thinking of getting lots of females to spread the aggression, and lots of plant so they can hide after mating. the 75 gallon will have calm waters, C02 system, prob 25 degrees.
  8. well the babies escaped the floating breeeder trap if you can believe it. so hoping they'll do alright in the main tank. lots of algie around, and hopefully they'll get to the bottom to get some courgette. apparently i should put some foam over the filter intake according to another website. worried about the filter if i do this - will it stuff it up?
  9. maybe only just over 1cm. still cool! very ative in breeder. think they really like the airstone. i think the baby guppy thinks it's a spa however!
  10. have just talked to aquarium maker man. prob 7 foot times 2.5 foot wide times just over 2 foot high! have to check with a builder whether the floor can take it but i think it will be ok. the floor is wooden, lots of joists i think they are called and there is no room underneath - i.e. it is just on ground. maybe on concrete - not sure. the tank is long so mure weight distribution.
  11. guess what catbrat! found some BN fry! almost 2 cm, and so far i've found about 4. have followed your advice and have managed to catch 2 of them and put them in a breeder trap (plastic) with an airstone and a piece of zuccchini and bit of spirulena tablet. they look happy! now i have to get another airstone pump for the tank, as i've found if you have one airstone at the top of the tank, the other attached airstone gets no air flow as i guess the air must folllow th path of least resistance. never mind yay! so excited. think it is all the vegies i've been feeding those BNs. wonder where he laid the eggs.
  12. no fry i'm afraid. he must have just gone walkabout. nevermind. at least he's alive! i'm now putting a fresh vegie in each second day to try and keep diet really high in fibre as they get a bit of protein, sharing the clown loaches food. hopefully no more deaths. thanks for all the moral support.
  13. hi there, just wondering if i could fit a common albino plec in this set up. am about to get a 6 foot tank made for my 2 gibbies, 2 joselimaianus (20 cm each max), one gold nugget (20 cm again) and newly acquired peppermint (about 15 cm max). probably have a siamese fighter with females as surface fish (only). i know the gibbies can grow to about 45 cm. will have lots of rock caves and driftwood etc. saw a lovely albino plec (one of those chocolate/washed out coloured ones, and common plecs should grow to only about 30 cm according to planet catfish. do you think i could add it to this tank? it's just that they look more active in the tank than gibbies, i saw an adult one and it was swimming around during the day. maybe because i have lots of lovely hiding places. do you think common plecs are more active cf gibbies? could i add it to the tank or is it too many big fish?
  14. should i put them in a breeder if i see any stray ones? i have fish that could eat them.
  15. isn't that wierd? after going on the web found my fish this morning! tried to see him last night with a torch and lights out, couldn't find him. got up this am and there he was! looking no worse for wear. now he's out and about, and the female is missing! maybe they take turns babysitting? so glad he's OK, couldn't have coped with another bristlenose death. do you think there are babies somewhere? if so, how long before i see them?
  16. thanks guys feel better. won't lift any more ornaments up, might disturb him. hopefully i'll see him in a month if he's had babies and they are finally mature enough to come out. will keep you posted!
  17. hi there can't seem to find my male common bristlenose in my 75 gallon tank. well established tank, parameters normal, female bristlenose and male yellow brislenose seem OK. recent unexplained death of female yellow balck eyed bristlenose has got me worried. lifted up one of the ornaments - no sign of him. it's been about a week and a half since i last saw him. havn't lifted up driftwood - thought maybe (hopefull) he is guarding some eggs, hiding away. he is more shy than the others. what do you guys reckon? feel upset, not sure what to do.
  18. i have a small jebo and didn't realise the filter wool should go ont top. i guess it makes sense to have the ceramic noodles underneath covered in water the whole time. i have to say though my water parameters have never been anything but excellent, and i don't overstock. shows what good little aquaria they are - idiot proof for people like me!
  19. i do a 30-50% water change on my tanks with a "python" in one tank (attaches to your faucet, uses water pressure to suck water out of tank and down sink, then you turn the knob and it pumps water directly into the tank mixing hot and cold to get the proper temperature) and just add a dechlorinator (only need about 20 drops) to the water going into the tank - probably more homeopathic than anything. for my catfish tank, it is smaller and the suction with the python is not as good as with my syphon (just one of the ones you suck to get started), so i use the syphon as those big cat poos are heavy and need good suction. i then tip that water out in the garden, and fill up from the python. again, i just add some dechlorinator. long ago i stopped buying the liquid bacteria stuff. i think it's a waste of money, coz it's so expensive. my fish don't seem to have a problem with water changes, in fact they look healthier. however coz i'm so lazy what i really want is a reservoir tank which i can subject to a uv sterilizer to kill bugs and do one water change from there. i guess i would still need to suction to get rid of the catfish poos. the other tank i'm planning to turn into a planted tank, so your fish waste gets used by the plants (hopefully). my water changes take about 2 hours in total, and i do them weekly.
  20. snowman cool pics, cool plecs, love the idea of an entire bristlenose tank. what do you use for water flow?
  21. awesome fish conaquavict! i have a gold nugget too - yes initially very shy, now becoming more active. definitely worth the money paid. wish i had got 2 now - could breed them if i got a male and a female. do you have rock caves? they love those.
  22. thanks snowman. no, unfortunately they didn't spawn, i havn't had any spawnings with these or my common bristlenose. could be coz i have glass catfish and clown loaches also - they can eat fry. might move the bristle nose into my 6 foot tank (when i get it) that i'm gonna need for the sailfin plecs. maybe then with proper breeding caves they will spawn. not sure how old - were only about 4-5 cm when i got them, have grown to about 7-8 cm now in 4 months i've had them. what do you reckon about breeding bristlenose plan as above? 6 foot tank might have to be 26 degrees for gold nugget.
  23. very sad recently my female yellow black eyed ancistrus died after looking pale for a while and not being very active. not sure why, all water parameters excellent, other plecs healthy, lots of driftwood and vegies. any thoughts? no spots/parasites obvious. found on back dead. no discolouration. had had her for about 4 months. her male partner alive and well.
  24. i have actually bought a gold nugget from animates in new zealand for $190 NZD, and your fish looks exactly like mine. good deal! apparently there are at least 3 different varieties of gold nuggets, and one is more hardy than the other 2 (who are not very hardy). i'm hoping mine is the more hardy type. has done well so far. by the way, mine went into hiding in the quarantine tank the entire time, hid in a decoration, but as soon as i put the decoration with him in it in the catfish tank i had set up, he came out and has been my most social catfish except for my bristlenoses. here's hoping my gibbies will be a bit more social
  25. thanks guys. will put output at surface. thinking of buying another air pump anyway, and will use a sponge over the air stone - will double as a sponge filter, plus will agitate the surface.
