  1. sounds like it might be trial by fire for you?I would not reccomend anyone buy into reptiles to that ammount but do the hard yards and learning firsthand along the way as you go.You can read all you want but there is no substitute for experience.
  2. stop reading so much internet and just get on with it?Do you have any reptiles at all?
  3. there was also a school of thought that their locusts were treated to be sterile too, this is also bollocks!
  4. if there was a significant problem with pestacides I would imagine the grasshoppers would be dead??
  5. Been through a similar thing with govt agency, namely changes to the left hand drive laws re importing of special interest vehicles and associacted age limits, ownership qualifying times etc etc.Still ongoing and has been for a good number of years with I would suggest, a hell of a lot more public pressure/interest than we could ever muster?I would support this but would hold little hope of any outcome in our favour. We are an agricultural based economy when all is said and done and just cannot imagine any significant changes?
  6. they breed african clawed toads at napier Aquarium, have done for years,I know they have sent them up to akld uni but don`t kmow if they were alive or dead on departure?Thet have strict controls/records on the actual numbers they are holding at any one time and have to freeze any dead ones etc.
  7. thats the other thing, there are sweet bugger all tortoises in austrailian zoos and even less in private hands?
  8. surprised to see you using that `list` for want of a better word?to push your barrow??? I would have to question the inclusion of african spursided??other than that you know as well as I how much you can believe what any individual may or may not have said?I know of a star tortoise that was in private hands prior to that date as well, can prove it too, they still have it`s shell. This list is probably a similar concoction that went around the bird world a few years ago, trying to find out what was here and had been for whatever reason prior to some fresh legislation going through.Things like himalayan monals for example were here in private hands and being sold openly were put on that list and therefore not outlawed like the igguanas. What ever happens I can`t see any changes on the horizon within my lifetime??
  9. are there any records of legal imports?I know they are here and have seen them in private collections.I also know how and when they got here. There were three `legal` igguannas imported by the napier aquarium and did not workout well trying to piggy back under the same permit?I would hazzard a guess it would end up in a similar way. Also I seem to remember seeing these on the cities list??which would hamstring any imports?
  10. agreed,he will most likely end up like you?but that will be the next millenium won`t it?
  11. the only time they get the urge to wander is when they want to lay?
  12. price wise you can`t go past the still air hovabators.was looking at the rcom reptile ones for $650 on Tm but it was the old story of if it ain`t broken why fix it?Have used everything homemade, tanks within tanks, waterbed drawers, hotwater cuppboard etc.The incubator is only as good as the room where you choose to set it up and for temp determined sexing which I assume you are interested in,this can be critical.Mine are setup in a wardrobe on the coolside of the house but here in hawkesbay they are always sneaking up??
  13. if your going to matakana you should carryon a little bit and go to TiPoint reptile park?wellworth a look and then you a minute or so away from goat island marine reserve.
  14. you can`t really make such a definative statement on a froglet that has just morphed??
  15. the iguannas were the only ones to suffer??I am more concerned about lizards and frogs leaving NZ than coming in.
  16. have seen them do that sort of thing myself and it may have been after a brumation but my memory ain`t what it used to be?put her /him out in the sun in a shallow dish of luke warm water, might get things moving?
  17. does that work for normal people or just you?
  18. if you want good breeding females then I would definatly keep them separate and let them get as big and mature as you can.Have not bred these myself but seen beardies that breed young and their growth just stops, also clutch size and egg producing rate and length of time greatly reduced.Same with alot of animals just because they can breed not always best to let them.
  19. well perpin,as a previous breeder of these geckoes, what sort of numbers could one expect to raise from each female per year? The weird thing about these for me is years ago when orana park had them and had some sort of problem or other they could not find anyone that wanted them.Eric Fox from otorahanga kiwi house took them and ivan had alot.Lack of interest knowhow or whatever led to a lack of males being produced and all of a sudden there was only one male left?now all of a sudden they are flavour of the month and everyone wants them for one reason or another?some to make their fortune?others for their own personal enjoyment /hobby whatever.
  20. they are not hard to breed? afew getting out there now.Remember the price of beardies a few years ago?5 years time they will be a dime a dozen.
  21. good that they were watching and got them separated so quickly???(sarcasim)
  22. maybe it was something he said?
  23. I have a theory that excessive calcium can cause this in young turtles. All of the previous things mentioned as well can be a cause too.
