  1. You wouldn't want to use the rain water in christchurch in the winter,, we have the highest polution rate from open fires in NZ :-? But the tap water is absolutly pure, no chemicals or artificial additives of any kind terry
  2. I feel that rain water can change drasticley (sp) in quality and chemistry due to polution in the atmosphere and i would not personaly use it for fish, even though it can be collected and used for household supply IMO. As for loaches, i would not even think of putting a loach into a tank unless the tank is well cycled for atleast 3 months or longer as loaches have no scales and can be very sensative to any sort of water quality change. How many fish did you ave in the tank, what is the water chemistry like , nitrite/amonia/ph etc terry
  3. Here they are if you want to see them http://www.globe.net.nz/~biteme/clown.html Terry
  4. They have settled in well with the other 7 loaches, ill move them to the 1.3 meter tank when it has been set up and cycled. terry
  5. I went Orginisim today to look at those loaches, they are quite large, but they aren't at the shop anymore , they are in my tank I couldn't resist buying them terry
  6. Both in diferent tanks and the female betta was removed when the male started to pick on her, about 7 hrs after spawning started as for the gourami, i didn't even know they had spawned, they were in their own tank and on monday night i saw the fry swimming about so i removed the female and about 11 pm the male was removed as he was eating the fry and not putting them back into the nest. It is his first time and proberly dosn't know what to do As for the FNZAS, well im going to put on my dunce cap here, I realy know little about the FNZAS, tell me more, why register the spawning rgds Terry
  7. At last I saw my fighting fish spawning on Sunday, great to see, the first time I have ever seen this, and I have just looked at the tank with the Dawf Gourami, whats those things, ??, HEY ITS SMALL FISH, and heaps of them to Hey well its new to me , even if you others have seen it before Rgds terry
  8. A chirstchurch club, YES, thats what we need, ill put my hand up as a founding member. Any more takers ?? contact me [email protected] Terry follow the link to pic of a couple of my tanks, the pics are large and will take time to load. http://www.globe.net.nz/~biteme
  9. The ph is 7.5 where I am in Avonside. I have always put water straight from the tap with no problems as there is nothing in the water here, but the water pressure is real high, the pump is just down the road and you should see the garden hose when its on, its about 3 cm in diameter when the tap is on, thats high pressure :-?
  10. And definatly dont add any clown loaches untill the tank is well cycled, at least 3 months or more as they are very sensitive to conditions and need good quality water, and expect Whitespot to develop for a while as these fish don't take traveling well, I have 7 clowns (3 to 5 inch )and all but 2 developed whitespot which was treated. 12. Three words " I WANT ONE !! " Damm,, got to build me one of those
  13. The plastic on the top as well as the suction-cups seem to be flexable PVC and the only chemical they would leech is chlorine as PVC is a chlorine based resin and usualy mold release is silicone oil, it seems strange to me that they would have problems,, Just thought I would let everyone know Might be a problem or might not, depends on how you prepare your equipment before it goes into a tank Cheers Terry
  14. My LFS are returning all ViaAqua heaters due to the plastic leeching chemicals and poisning new tanks,( suspected ) they say there have been a couple of problems with fish in new tanks being affected with the new heaters, I cannot conferm that this is a recall by the importer. I personaly have 4 of these heaters and I have had no problems, mind you i always soak anything i intend to put into my tanks in a bucket of water for a week or so.I have purchased 4 more of these heaters ( at a good price ) and i intend to use them after a good soaking. Rgds Terry
  15. Hello Zeta I had an angel with the same spots, they look like a pinhead sized spot not unlike a small tick attached to skin, the spots are attached to the fish and donot seem to be a part of the fish's coloring. The spots mine had went away after about 3 months, this fish has died due to a swim bladder problem, couldn't stay upright, i dont know if this has anything to do with the spots though and i havn't been able to find any info on these black spots Terry
  16. Is there any sort of guppy society in NZ at the moment ? If not creating one would be a great idea, I put my hand up for inclusion in the creation of such a society Terry

    Do guppies ?

My wife loved the guppies, looks like we have bitten of more then we can chew we didnt realise that we had purchased a pregnant female untill two weeks later, looks like i will be busy making more tanks as I already have planes for my fishroom in the garage, ( 4 car , so i should have enough room for a couple of years or so ), at lest it will keep me busy untill my clown loaches are large enough to breed  Terry

    Do guppies ?

Greetings all Cess > the female was moved to the other tank about 5 - 10 hours after noticing the fry so the time between each batch of fry would be about 12 - 24 hrs apart. Once again has given me more information than I could have hoped for, it is great to see that you putup with the silly questions of a newbee in the fish world If you keep inbreeding fish, mother to son etc, does that not increase the mortality rate or the disfigurement of fish due to this inbreeding ? Terry
  22. I have a female guppie that had fry, when i saw this I moved her to another tank ( smaller tank ) by herself where she had another 10 or so, BUT my question is,, since the fry that were from the first birth process are colored and from the second , (in the smaller tank ) are completly without color, Have they been seperated into male first then female second, or colored and non colored by the female, or would it be the change of tanks that would have made a difference to the outcome of color vs non color. The fry are now 2 weeks old rgds The fatest guy in town Terry
  23. Itried to obtain this chemical levamisole by phoning around chemical supply /drug companys and even the local vets and chemists, even went to the effort of getting infomation about bringing into NZ a small amount ( through MAF ) and what I learnt was, Cant get it from anybody I tried and prohibitivley (sp) expensive to get imported legaly into NZ as it has not been registerd as a chemical by itself, but can be imported if it is a component that is pre/mixed product, that is worming paste etc :-? But I only tried 3 or 4 chemical suppliers, 5 vets, 3 chemists and the government agency that deals with drug importation, sombody else may have better luck if they have the right contacts rgds Terry
  24. I have two test tubes that i cannot use as the glass seems to be contaminated, even after many washings and cleaning including the dishwasher, after the second of 3 chemicals ( nitrate test ) are added I get a real high reading, there should be no color at this point untill I put in the third chemical, Could the high reading you had be due to a problem of this nature ?? And my Guppies sit on the bottom when they sleep,, or the fishy equivelent of sleep Rgds Terry
