  1. Hi all I have put my white worm culture into a shoe box (didnt have a foam one available and it seems to be doing fine) The culture has been going now for a couple of months, to be honest I harvested way too early when not knowing anything about it (have since let the culture grow and not touched it and things are moving nicely), have since switched from bread to cat food on advice and the population seems to have flourished. That and keeping the soil moist, the worms are feeding well now and the old days of mouldy food on top are gone as the worms devour everything. My question is, what is the best way to fatten worms up, I notice a tonne of worms but thousands of worms are like mini size, is it a case of waiting and the worms naturally over time grow larger and fatten over time? because have got thousands of them that are sort of 5mm long Cheers
  2. can normal flower pots and things be used in a fish tank as hiding spaces if so, is there anything you do (as dont want to harm the fish if certain materials change the water quality) to make sure that does not happen, ie what types of flower pots (plastic, ceramic) from mitre 10? Are they all safe to use in your tank? what things do you use that are safe to use in a tank (community) cheers
  3. what do people use for glue-ing fish ornaments together that will not be toxic in freshwater? Cheers
  4. at work, on the fish forums, best way to be at work i think so can I please ask, by washing the sponges out in rain water, am I washing out the good bacteria also? therefore should it be a light rinse out of the sponges?
  5. Hi everyone How often should I be cleaning out my power filter? I have one with the sponge filter media. I plan on washing the sponges (3 in total inside) alternately. Ive been told this is a good idea... Also can someone please inform me, lets say I washed out the sponges (I have rain water) does it destroy the good bacteria ive created with on an established tank? or is it ok to do this. Cheers
  6. Thanks everyone Look forward to getting help where needed Biggest things I will be asking is if there is health issues in fish, those scare me the most, and how to medicate properly given the types of fish I have in my tank etc Praying I dont get ICH!
  7. Awesome. Ill do it in the weekend.
  8. Place them in moving bags and aerate the water... That way i can get the new tank up to temp and hopefully stable then ill aclimatise the fish etc
  9. Heres a thought. If i transfer everything (water fikter gravel substrate and ornaments and plants into the new tank and run it to get it to the same temperature, in theory i will of tranfered all the good bacteria and the tank shouldnt need to be cycled... Anyone want to say yay or nay on this idea????
  10. Ie had no issues thus ar. In fact the discus often follow around the big gold angel. When they first were in the tank he taught them how to shake up freeze dried worms like a rabid dog with a chew toy. They follow his lead I wont be purchasing anymore angels. I do worry about their aggression levels however to date they are very placid. Else itll be angel on the menu for the black swan that hangs outside my kitchen window waiting for his daily bread And yes. I only got a few neon to cycle the tank ages ago. I had 6 now i have 3
  11. Hi there everyone Im nathan and i have a 240 litre fresh water tank. I have 4 discus, 2 angels a large pleco a couple loaches and a few neons. Oh and a couple of borneo suckers Looking forward to interacting with others and getting helpful advice Im in the process if cycling a new tank. I gravel vac and water change every other day. I am lucky to have a rain water tank at home so my ph levels are soft and it is chemical free. I look forward to running two filters and two heaters in the new tank plus adding to my discus school
  12. Yea i think ill transfer some filter media if i can and put in some raw shrimp and do water changes I cant put the new filter in with the old tank as the tank i have is an aqua one wet dry filter system that is built in. I plan on running both filters and both heaters in the one tank when the nitrogen cycle is complete and im happy with the water chemistry etc
  13. I will definitely be doing water changes on the new tank with the fish in (cycling the new tank with a few hardy fish). Im the obsessive type, and I think you sort of have to be to keep fish haha. At least a constant healthy tank.
  14. Awesome thank you for the reply I use a power filter currently, it has sponges, would it be a good suggestion to remove one of the sponges (there are 3) and replace a fresh one in there, and transfer that over to the filter I am using on the new tank? Its a new filter system, I plan when I come to do the transfer to place the power filter into the new tank also. I assume this isnt going to harm the water at all? I also find vacuumming the gravel every 2 days when I do my water changes a great way to kill two birds with one stone so to speak. The perils of keeping Discus...
  15. Hi there everyone Just want to know the best way to cycle a new tank. I have new gravel, and I am going to use a few scoops of the old gravel in my cycled tank in a stocking to place in the new tank to kick off the cycle), plus I also will transfer a few ornaments, was even thinking of placing a couple of the hardy fish in after a week or so (subject to water tests to ensure its not gone mental) to speed up the cycle (including a few more plants and so forth, plus feeding the tank and doing weekly water changes for now). If all goes well, im guessing 4-6 weeks before the nitrogen cycle is complete and my levels are reading 0 I need the water perfect, any additional tips are welcome, reason being is I have discus fish and I know moving them into the new environment will be stressful and that is the only thing I want them to be stressed about, water quality and the fish cycle I need perfect to ensure a smooth transfer
