  1. Woah, the power cuts seem a bit of a problem over there in winter, i suppose i should feel lucky, we don't get too many power cuts over here, we sometimes get them in big storms, but we don't get more than 2-3 a year!
  2. Keep us posted, i'm planning on gettin some Fighters in a few weeks, there's a really nice one in my Not-So-LFS. i'm getting bristtlenoses too, in the near future.
  3. Welcome. i'm sure you'll find it interesting and helpful here, i did, its a great place.
  4. I think those goldfish with the really big eyes are ugly, dnt no what they're called, they may be ugly but i think thats what makes them so great. So ugly, they're cute
  5. ive heard of this laterite stuff but wasn't entirely sure what to look for, i'll try and get an undergravel heater, depends on the price, i'll look out for the 'Dusk' Stuff, its probably the same over in England. btw i've seen Takashi's tanks, i did a search once, he has some really awesome stuff i saw one photo where loads of people were crowding round him, watching set up!
  6. The prices in england are a bit steep i think but the tank, filter, heater, double light and two lights, substrate(i think) and some plastic plants for £115 is ot too bad, i think it converts to bout $345 NZD though which probably sounds pretty expensive.
  7. Yeah i found out that on XE.com the NZD is on the main converter, i jus assumed it mite be the USD, or close to it, so i used their quick converter thing, which only had the USD. i got is sorted now though.
  8. I've read that you need a a thin layer of fertiliser stuff, then a main layer of sustrate (smallish stuff for rooting), then you have the top layer. i didn't know if this is right or what the fertiliser stuff really is, etc. I'll probably end up ith just a big layer of rooting substrate, maybe with some fertiliser stuff in it and then a thin layer of the top substrate on top of it.

    My First Catfish

my tank could probably take some small pleco's but with other fish too it would probably soon get crowded. I think the owner of the shop is pretty good and i'll probably get her to order them for me for next saturday, my tank would have been runing for a week then. i think i'll print out this info and take it with me.
  10. Thaks for the advice i was thinking of getting some java fern, i heard that its quite good. my main problem now is what to use as substrate.

    My First Catfish

No i didn't know how to to sex them so thankyou caryl. i'll be getting 3 then, 1 male and 2 females, i need to find somewhere in England that sells them. i think the place in cosham that i'm getting my stuff from will have them or be able to get them. THanx for the help guys
  13. You may/May not know that i'm getting a new tank on saturday hopefully, I think its about 100L. I want to make a planted tank, i'm going to get plenty of light, and i'll probably use home-made C02 because i don't have enough money for anything fancy, I'm going to be focussing mainly on fish too but i want it to be a planted tank. My main problem is that i'm not entirely sure about the substrate. Could anyone help me with what should be in it? Also f anyone knows what plants would be relatively easy to keep or good for beginners etc. i was thinking of getting a few Vallis' and i would like something that grows on Bogwood. I will be adding plants slowly as i go though. Any help Greatly appreciated.

    Carbon Filters

If you clean the filter out that often, you'll just kill all of the bacteria living in it, especially cleaning it in tap water. I don't think it would have done anything to the PH though, but it would mean your rank needs to start cycling again, each time it was cleaned. Oh well lesson learned.

    My First Catfish

Thats Great news! i was told that 2+ mite be ok in lrge tanks but mite get aggrssive. It gonna be a 100L tank approx and i would like to get get bout 3 for it. i'll probably jus get 2 though and maybe the week after get another 1. Thanx for the help thats Great! :D
  16. Ah Thanx for the help. i'll see what i can do on saturday. i should be able to get a deal and upgrade some of the plants and swap the plastic plants for real, etc. thanx for the advice i'll look at prices, i'll try to avoid the jager heaters.
  17. I should be getting a tank on saturday, once its settled down and started cycling, i want to get a catfish for it, possibly 1 or 2 other fish. Its going to be a Planted Community Tank. I was thinking i could get a Bristlenose because i've read a bit and they seem to do well in community tanks and like to eat algae (Oh yeah i want it to eat algae) What would you reccommend i would like to get a couple. but i've also read that Bristlenos' prefer to be on their own. Any Thoughts?

    Betta Hex

Its like i heard somewhere. The fish should be able to Thrive Not just Survive. The fish would look better in a bigger tank anyway.
  20. Oh fair Enough. I thought they mite b around the same price and there were particular brands to avoid. Ok then, i'll try to get a deal on a better, more expensive heater. :D
  21. I thought it would be something like NZD but it wasn't an option on XE.com on the little quick thing so £115 GBP is $334.76 NZD. About the heater, that was my thoughts too, i figured i shouldn't skimp but i didn't want to go overboard so i figured that 150W would be best. Thanxs For all the help, it has been usefull for finding out different reasons . What are the best heaters??? Who makes them??? :D :D :D
  22. OK I jus checked on XE.com. £115 = 203 USD I dnt no if it is USD you use in New zealand???
  23. Yes i do live in england and theres a new setup for £115, so i suppose it is about $350 (Rip-off Britan) It comes with a 100L tank i think, maybe a bit more and a filter, Double Lights, Heater, and i think fake plants. If you'd prefer (You probably Would) I'll try and convert prices to $$$. :D I also wanted to say that i will be getting the new tank because i checked the tank properly this morning and it has leaked around the back, so it is now going to house my girlfriend's Tortoise. I am going to upgrade the heater and stuff slowly probably, i mite try and get a deal in the shop to upgrade the heater. :D :D
  24. Well the tank's Still here this morning so it hasn't exploded or leaked. Thanx For the feedback, mostplaces suggested a 100W Heater for 50 -100L Tanks and i figured i'd get a 150W To be on the safe side. was jus worried iit might be a bit much. I have a hood, its plastic and has a set of clips in which i will remove and replace with a double. If the price bets too high, for the seperate parts, i am going to get a new tank which comes with everything for £115. then i'll upgrade as i get money. then i can use the old equptment in this old tank and have 2 Tanks (OH-NO....MTS....Kicking...in....Can't....Resist)
  25. I jus wanted to come back to this quickly. I wanted to say that you could probably do this and it would work, except for the battery cycling, would probably get a memory and not last 5Mins unless they we NI-MH Batteries. Also if you buy a UPS they usually come with a Warranty thing where the company will pay up to bout £100k if their UPS fails and Damages Your equipment. If you build one, then obviously you won't have this Warranty
