  1. Thanks guys. Unfortunately they will need a bit more practice as they gave up defending the eggs and they all got eaten. We are thinking of maybe putting them in their own tank so they can try again.
  2. Thanks. Yep this is their first spawning so I'm prepared for a possible fail. The other fish we have are Golden Barbs, Cherry Barbs, Neon Tetras, Rosy Tetras, Dwarf Chain Loaches, SAE's and Bristlenose Plecos.
  3. This is the most exciting discovery ever :bounce: :happy1: Yesterday I noticed our little female Blue Ram Thumbalina very pink around her stomach area but I thought nothing of it. Tonight while my husband was doing a water change, Rambo our male Ram was getting aggressive towards the vacuum. The two of them were also chasing all the other fish from the area. So I went to investigate and found these... Rambo is very protective And Thumbalina is doing a good job of collecting bubbles from the bubble stone to blow out over the eggs Any advice as to how to help care for the eggs and fry would be greatly appreciated!
  4. My beautiful kitties! Thumper (grey longhair) is 10 months and Pia is 5 months
  5. Ostrich is good and Kangaroo, and Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Red Deer... it's all good !drool: I wouldn't eat Veal though - the treatment of the Bobby Calves is questionable, same reason I don't eat piggies!
  6. Check out this website, I use it as a guide http://www.aqadvisor.com I've entered in your tank size and stock and out popped the following: Warning: Glowlight Tetra may become food for Flying Fox. Warning: Danio erythromicron may become food for Flying Fox. Note: Chinese Algae Eater will become incredibly aggressive and destructive when they become adults. Warning: Chinese Algae Eater is not recommended for your tank - it may eventually outgrow your tank space, potentially reaching up to 27.9 cm. Warning: Glowlight Tetra may become food for Chinese Algae Eater. Warning: Danio erythromicron may become food for Chinese Algae Eater. Suggestion: If you want to keep more than 1 Molly, minimum recommend male to female ratio is 1:2 (M:F). You will be less likely to experience problem if you get even more females. Warning: When Bolivian Ram starts to breed, they may become too aggressive to co-exist with Neon Tetra. Warning: Flying Fox is too aggressive to co-exist with Neon Tetra. Warning: Chinese Algae Eater is too aggressive to co-exist with Neon Tetra. Warning: At least 5 x Glowlight Tetra are recommended in a group. Warning: Bolivian Ram is too aggressive to co-exist with Glowlight Tetra. Warning: Flying Fox is too aggressive to co-exist with Glowlight Tetra. Warning: Chinese Algae Eater is too aggressive to co-exist with Glowlight Tetra. Warning: Black Widow Tetra will likely to fin nip Guppy. Try increasing the number to 6. Suggestion: If you want to keep more than 1 Platy, minimum recommend male to female ratio is 1:2 (M:F). You will be less likely to experience problem if you get even more females. Warning: Bolivian Ram is too aggressive to co-exist with Danio erythromicron. Warning: Flying Fox is too aggressive to co-exist with Danio erythromicron. Warning: Chinese Algae Eater is too aggressive to co-exist with Danio erythromicron. Warning: At least 4 x Peppered Cory are recommended in a group. Warning: At least 5 x Black Widow Tetra are recommended in a group. Warning: Your selected species may eventually require 136% of your aquarium space. You may need to deal with territorial aggressions later on. Try removing some of (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, Corydoras paleatus) or get a larger tank. Recommended temperature range: 24 - 25 C. [Display in Farenheit] Recommended pH range: 7 - 7.5. Recommended hardness range: 11 - 15 dH. Recommended water change schedule: 36% per week. Your aquarium stocking level is 118%
  7. I agree, when we first got started on fish we had a little 40L and the LFS was more than happy not only to keep selling us more fish but to sell us fish that would outgrow our tank. A lot of reserch and learning later and this newbie has learnt! We were prob well over 100% stocked at the time with fish that were unsuitable for that size tank. Lost a few Rosy Tetras from stress I believe (they would die with no symptoms after the big male went on a rampage and picked on them). Just a question on the Flying Fox - is it a true Flying Fox or Siamese Algae Eater. A lot of LFS sell them as one in the same which they are not. The Fox is the agressive one and will likely become aggresive the bigger he gets. From what I have learnt on this forum this week is that most aggression happens at lights out!
  8. I thought as much, good to know I didn't euth her in vain. Also just wanted to confirm it was a secondary infection and not something wrong in the tank! Meth Blue would have been my next step but I thought she was too far gone. Thanks for the input
  9. Haha yea, the only other pets he now wants are 2 Turtles and a couple Dwarf Puffers. I've tried to convince him we need 2 dogs, a pig and Guines Pigs (to name a few) Funny story about our youngest kitten - we went into the pet store to buy filter wool and came out with a kitten and no filter wool :sml2:
  10. I like these names Fellow S.African here
  11. Not all our fish have names...but a select few 7cm Bristlenose Pleco named Herman (not sure why, referred to him a Herman when we got him and it stuck) 2 smaller Bristlenose's name Shredder and Splinter German Blue Rams named Rambo and Thumberlina Neon Tetra named Gill - he lost his gill cover somehow Golden Barb name Munter - he's an ugly guy, face seems to be on skew Golden Barb named Big Mumma - she was pregnant and fat for a long long time before she released her eggs. Rosy Tetra named Big Boss - he our biggest and oldest guy, one of our firsts along with Herman. Still rules the Rosy roost We had a really ugly Rosy Tetra with one eye (received her that way) named Quasimodo, she has since passed.
  12. Hi all, I need some help identifying what went wrong with one of my Golden Barbs. I noticed her tail fin was missing one Saturday (15/09). It looked like severe fin rot but this was the first time I had noticed it and I pay close attention to my tank. I thought maybe someone got aggressive during the night and bit it off. We quarantined her and upon the advice of the LFS (we only take advise from one guy who knows his stuff) we began treatment with Melafix and Tonic Salt. Sunday I noticed small red "sores" or lesions on end of her tail stump. By Tuesday a big cotton looking ball surrounded where her tail once was. There also was a white patch on her back leading up to her dorsal fin and her dorsal was infected too with white growth (not cottony looking though). She hadn't been eating and was swimming fine up until Tuesday night where she really began to struggle - swimming at the surface, sometime lying motionless on her side at the surface. It was at this point I decided to euthanise her. I doubted whether she could recover even if the infection cleared up as it had spread to her tail stump not just her fins and I couldn't bear to see her suffer. Question is - what was this? None of the other fish have shown any symptoms. Fin rot? Columnaris? Saprolegnia? Damage from injury and bacteria or fungus took hold? The LFS tested our water and there was a small reading of ammonia which can be explained by a dead otto we couldn't find, nitrite and nitrate were 0 I tested our water parametres 2 days after a water change Ammonia:0 Nitrite:0 Nitrate:0 PH: 6.8 - 7.0 (can never quite tell) Nitrate is always zero, I know some say it shouldn't be zero in a cycled tank BUT we have a fair amount of plants. Sorry for long winded post, see below for pic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
