  1. So apart from Caryls suggestions, does anybody have any others? He's in the 50L at the moment, just him and Gary (snail). Was told that I needed something thats is more of a top level fish, but I don't know... Also, does anyone elses float upside down on the suface of the water and blow a continous stream of bubbles? Or have I just got a psychotic fish??
  2. http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 520902.htm Read the reason for selling... Me thinks someone didn't do enough research first... Why are some people so stupid?? However, I wish I had the money for it!!
  3. Yip, and the poor thing is going to go to someone with no clue... or hopefully, someone with a clue who knows he's a complete ********* and wants to save the poor thing... Mind you, I had a friend pick up a tank off trademe, complete with 'cold water siamese fighter'. I told her that they don't exist, and the seller must be wrong, but my friend was adamant... went and picked it up, and guess what... It was a VT GOLDFISH.
  4. http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 368241.htm I saw this auction a while ago - and asked him if it was a typo, and was told that 20 degreees is plenty warm enough... Also, kept with guppies?? And he wonders why the poor thing bites their tails?!?
  5. Dude. I know it was a new toy and all, but seriously?? You need to get out more James, do you have/get any Spotted Blue Eyes in?? And if so, how much? I really like the look of them!!
  6. So I got home tonight, and was telling the husband all about the cool looking fish I saw tonight, and which ones I think we should get for the tank... And do you think I can remember the names of all the cool looking ones?? So... mr f1shguy please.... any chance of a list of the common names of the tropicals you kindly showed us tonight?? (And then it might be time for a trip out to Carines....) PLEASE???
  7. This is using one dead fresh prawn that you buy over the counter at the supermarket by the way, not some random prawn you purchase at the pet store or pick up at the sea side. It's going to get eaten anyway. My tank was cycled, and there was no mini-cycle when I added my fish - I monitored this closely, I have Aspergers so when I do something, I go the whole hog. I didn't want it set up 'today' and add fish tomorrow - like I said, I reasearched, this site was down, so I had the american ones to go off. I'm glad I didn't risk any fish, a prawn that was going to end up as someones lunch/dinner compared to live fish...
  8. While I am one of the newest members here, I'd like to say that I was more than a little shcoked to see people still using fish for cycling! I did quite an extensive amount of research before I got my 50L set up, and I personally used fishless raw prawn cycling. There were several reasons for this: 1) No fish were harmed in the making of the tank. 2) It meant that I could cycle the tank quicker, by having the temperature set higher than if I used live fish. 3) Having a raw prawn released a steady amount of ammonia, and you could track where it was in the cycle quite effectively. 4) By using the prawn, it meant that I didn't OVERFEED the tank. 5) I didn't know enough to cycle with plants, and even knowing about it now, I would STILL cycle with a prawn. 6) There was no mess to clean up, bar lifitng the prawn out (it was in a pantyhose leg) and disposing of it. 7) I didn't have access to filter media. I would still do it again, I had no smell, my tank was fully cycled in 3 weeks, not 6, and when I put my fish in, they weren't going to die because I forgot to do a water change, and the ammonia spiked... Just my 2c... As I said, one of the newest members... (interestingly enough, when I was researching for my tank, this forum was down, so I spent a lot of time on American sites)
  9. Yip, and while the female members all opted out immediately, the men seemed to like the idea!
  10. ^^^As for maintaining the tank - I've told him I don't care how much he has done to get the tank ready, he is helping maintain it if he's picking most of the fish! LOL I'm all excited about getting it cycling soon....
  11. Thanks for the reply. I knew they'd eat anything they are capable of fitting in their mouths, and while my husband thinks this is awesome, I think otherwise LOL I've seen them kept with angels, but I know that angels need very specific water params, so don't really want to be messing around with that. I might see what others say, and keep an open mind, cause my fish tend to do what they want, not what they're supposed to. Is there a particular brand of canister filter that people would recommend? I would prefer one that is quieter, as the tank is going to be in our lounge, and the bedroom will be quite close to it. But other than that, as long as it doesn't cost more than the tank did, I'd be happy! (Tis a joke, I got the tank for $20 + sheet of replacement glass for $15 + silicone $15) As for the breeding, damn, was worth an ask though...
  12. Hi all, My 200L is getting closer to completion, and I've been wondering what to put in it. The hubby has decided that because he's had to do some stuff for my tank, that he wants input as to what to put in there. (Might let him choose this time, then get me a bigger one later! :rotf: ) Anyways, he's fallen in love with the huge BGK at Animal Antics, and he now wants one. Thats ok, cause I think they're cool too - and I've read up on them, know the pH levels, temps etc that they need, as well as plenty of hiding places. So I have a few questions :dunno: 1) What can go in the tank with it? He also likes Kribs, but I've read that they don't play nice? I don't like a 'teeming' tank, but I do like a bit of movement. 2) I'm still struggling to find a decent filter for the tank, I don't have a lot of room, and while this may seem strange, I actually like the 'hang-on' filters. If I got two of those (I've seen them go up to 100L), and put them at opposite ends of the tank would that be ok? Or should I go for a different style? 3) Back to the BGK - does anyone breed them?? The only one I've seen for sale was $69.90! :tears: Either way, I'd appreciate any input I can get
  13. I made the suggestion to hubby that he could have his own tank, with whatever fish he wanted in it. He said he would, but my fish would end up in his tank... and become food for his ones. Me thinks I'll stick to keeping the tanks for me, but I'll have a tank with some fish that he likes in one... LOL
  14. Thanks Caryl! I'll keep that in mind when I finally get there. I think the hubby thought that me keeping fish was going to be one tank, a few fish, end of story... I think he's regretting the fish tank now, and wishing he had gone for the birds instead!
  15. It is growing back a bit more quickly now, poor little bugger looks really 'raggy' though! However, I did just watch him build a bubble nest, so he must be doing better! :happy2:
  16. So... I should tell the hubby he can get a feathfin and a BGK (he saw one the other day and fell in love) if he gets me a MUCH bigger tank?? I'm liking where this is going... :sml1:
  17. Ah. So... can I keep a featherfin with something bigger than it then? Or is that just giving it a few days worth of food? Damn it. I feel my MTS starting up again... I don't think my hubby would agree with me :an!gry
  18. I saw that when I was researching on whether he'd play nice with my fighter... I'd love to breed them, I just need to get a breeding tank, look into what to feed the fry, oh, and get a female LOL. That'd be a bit further down the track me thinks... Another question though, do these guys play nice with other catfish? Or is it better not to mix catfish breeds? Hubby saw a featherfin the other day he liked the look of, but I don't want to think of mixing if they don't!
  19. Damn... Ok then... that'll just mean more money put aside for them later LOL... I still love his personality though, he does the most random stuff at times!
  20. ...and after doing some more research... she is actually a he LOL  Noticed that he's been getting bigger, and his pectoral fin has gone a beautiful shade of orange... I saw some little ones the other day at KiwiPetz... but they wanted $23 each for them!?! Is this normal pricing for them?? I want a few more for my larger tank, but I only paid $10 for Hoover! Or does anyone breed them?
  21. Getting back on topic LOL, I've decided that I HAVE to come on the tank crawl. Cause I have NO IDEA of what I want to put into my 200L when its ready. I might even drag the hubby around too, cause then he can have some input... maybe. :sml1:
  22. Sounds good! I have a people mover Although we might skip my house... my little bitty 50L isn't that impressive LOL
  23. Sorry I didn't make it, I ended up having to take my 16 month old to hospital, and he's still there Sheepsnana, I'll try and get over and drop your tank back this week depending on what happens with my boy. Hopefully, I'll make next months meeting!
  24. LOL, you mean people! Mice are cute... my cat loves cuddling them :sml1: On a serious note though, I am planning on actually getting to this meeting so that I can meet everyone. As an extra motivational bonus - I can bring Sheepsnana his tank back at the same time
