  1. i want to do a small tank like this later too, quite interested in the design aspecs more than anything else. the ability to squeeze everything into such a compact space yet have it functioning as well as a large tank is interesting nice work.
  2. now wouldnt that be nice easy maintenance and a stunning looking pico tank. well done, awesome work! can you summarise the "spec's" of the whole tank?
  3. not quite! green star polyps grew over my euphyllia and suffocated 2 branches! i pulled heaps of it out last night, grows like a bloody weed. worse than xenia
  4. Here's an interesting subject, post up "corals wars!" In other words, if you have seen two corals growing next to each other and touching (or nearly touching), who wins? (or maybe it's a draw?) This might also help those who are looking to position their new corals (or where not to place them!!!) My (small) findings so far: Green star polyps vs Euphyillia (hammer) = GSP wins Monti Capricornis (brown) vs Monti Digitata = Cap wins Euphyillia (frogspawn) vs Blue tipped Staghorn = Frogspawn wins Blue tipped Staghorn vs Pink millepora = Stag wins

    sand

science and reality almost never go together science is also full of theories even though proven (saying layton maybe right) dont always effect the outcome 100% of the time (saying you can still have a good tank with a sand bed)
  6. gravity (head loss) is the killer
  7. horizontally 10metres there is no (or little) friction. only head would be an issue here

    sand

so would that mean that once the phosphates are fully leached from the sand and consumed (by LR , fluidised or skimmed or whatever) that no more phosphate can be leached? or is it a continual cycle?
  9. it's not the tube that is a concern, its the welds still, looking at the design and the fact there are 3 legs across i think it would be strong enough. if only 2 it would definately be a problem!
  10. did they give you a reason why they would not accept it back or swap for another? sounds like they know its behaviour and just wanted to get rid of it!!!
  11. if the above is not your circumstances and only an example, im intrigued to know what actually did happen? i have had bad service and I have had good service. i have no problem stating who because it was only in my case, others might have found the opposite service. the service was not poor as such, more so the specific employee (at hff) i dealt with i found very rude. the good service i received (a couple of times at jansens) again was specific to the emloyee that served me (rather than a "company policy" type situation such as a refund on a bad purchase) the guy (on both occasions) was very helpful and keen to offer advice, even backing himself up saying the advice is from personal experience and i might find others may offer an alternative solution. no it wasnt you ben, but im sure you would be helpful too i think you have to be careful not to fully judge a shops service if its based on a single employee. if the service is based on "store policy" it is a different story of course. i think the lfs should be quite clear on stating purchases, such as marine fish and their compatibility, to any purchaser regardless of their 'experience' in the hobby. even so, the hobbyist should be careful with their purchase before pulling out their wallet
  12. at 5ft, go 3 x halides with the 250 in the middle or at least supplement it with some T5's. two halides wont quite be enough (depending on what you're keeping of course) i have 3 x 150W'ers over my 5 footer and wish i'd gone with 4. keep us all up-to-date with pic's, always good to see progress on a new project.

    sand

any more info on this warick? what sort of sand is it? how can it not have algae grow on it? i vacuumed out another 20 litres from my sandbed yesterday, water was brown as. sand looks heaps cleaner though.

i use my sensor, just have the night mode on about 90% flow. that way it still creates small variations of turbulence at daytime.
  15. doh! pic's too big!
  16. i also hear they can be trained to eat peanuts and stand on their fins, anyone managed to do it? by seriously, IMO a CBB is one of the most beautiful marine fish around. very delicate looking and very elegant in their movements. a true classic!

genesis energy. its my fault - i dont blame them at all. they have come around to try and read it on several occasions. the cover for the meter is all hazy and cant read through it. i did clean it with turps early december though so it has been a couple of months. not surprised if the dude saw the address and thought f@#$k that!!! ahhh haaa haaaa haaaaaa!!!
  18. you shouldnt consider any type of fish tank let alone be at newbie stage if you believed that!!!

The Centameter (http://www.centameter.co.nz) looks like a pretty cool tool (can get for $139 ($30 off) if order through genesis energy link at bottom of page) Just read the FAQ - looks like it can monitor individual circuits too.
