  1. Hi. I have just noticed that my female dwarf gourami looks as if it has a few scales missing from behind it's eye. The Siamies fighter got out of the breading box he's in and all then other dwarf Gouramis where rather subdued and hiding when I got home. I put him back in prison lol.. and fed them and they came back to there normal selves. I have had the water tested this morning and all levels where good . :-) So my question is, is my female sick or is this most likely the result of bullying, If sick what could it be and what should I do to treat it ? Picture bellow see pink mark behind the eye. Thanks Greg
  2. Hi. I won a Trademe auction for a 120cm x 54cm x 46cm fish tank. The tank comes with - 2 Oscar fish - 2 very large Bristlenose fish - 1 Silver Dollar I need same advise on moving this collection with the least stress the the fish as possible. My plan this thus far to half fill 2 x 50Lt waist bins with water from the tank and put the fish in that, the bids have a lids, so they cant jump out. Next is to put the gravel into buckets with remaining water being ditched. The tank being transported in the back of my 4x4 on top of a blanket. all items fastened don't so they cant slide. At the other side the gravel will be returned to the tank , then the water and the fish returned to the tank , fit the heater , and slowly add water with with stress coat and stress zime. Not sure how else to do it . Any ideas ? Thanks Greg
  3. Congratulations :-) Thanks for letting me know .. I feel a lot better about mine.
  4. lol never expecting them to nest . was planing on getting a dedicated breading tank in a couple of months and was expect it to be quite difficult to get them to nest.. There is to much tension between the Gouramis for there to be any successes for a spawning.
  5. Hi. In answer to how long after spawning "Once spawning has ended, the male takes responsibility for guarding and tending the brood. He becomes completely intolerant of his mate and she should be removed for her own safety at this point. Hatching time is dependant on temperature, but usually occurs within 36 hours, and is signified by the nest breaking apart. Observation thorugh a magnifying glass should reveal hundreds of tiny fry. Most males are ok to leave in with the fry for the first couple of days, until they have used up their yolk sacs. It is really a matter of personal choice if you choose to leave the male with the fry until they become free swimming or remove him immediately post-hatching." From here http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Trichogaster&species=lalius&id=82 it's very informative. Credit to Joe for providing the link. Mine haven't actually spawned yet as far as I know. There is to much competition in the tank. I'm looking around for another tank similar to mine just a bit smaller. I will not be very impressed if my fish are sterile. Once I have another tank I'll report back. Good luck with this spawning will be holding thumbs for success :-) Greg
  6. World of water in Hamilton was the only one. Looking for another ..
  7. thanks for the advice. I have a 70lt tank. 3 dwarf gouramis 2 perl gouramis 7 guppies think I'll find them another home. 2 algae eaters picus I think. The tank is heaverly planted on the sides , plants on the one side still need to grow. Tanks 4 weeks old just completed the cycle last week. Can see I need another tank or two lol . Thanks Greg

  9. Hi. I bought 2 weeks ago royal red and and colbolt blue with the aim to bread with them later in the year. Yesterday I bought what I was told was a female colbolt blue. When I checked the tank this morning my Royal Red and Colbolt Blue have started nesting. Building bubble nests and collecting plant material. This was unexpected and very exciting as a beginner. When I was at a fish shop earlier today I was told that the majority of imported males are sterilized by breeders. What are the odds my male are sterile ? Is there a way to tell other than just trying to pair them off ? Is there a way to reverse this ? Is this female a colbolt blue ? I take it she is to young to reproduce ? Thanks Greg
  10. I find that if it's in good working condition, it should be flowing like a garden hose does when you water the garden - aka quite quick.
  11. I have the standard light that came with the tank a Blueplanet Classic70 (70Lt). So the catch is to be able to identify the real water plants lol .. thanks for the advise. Greg
  12. Hi Sheepsnana The substrate is JBL Aquabasis plus "Long-term nutrient substrate mixture" The light is the one that came with the tank a Blueplanet Classic70 (70Lt). How long should the light be on for ? No on the CO2. Most of the algae has been in the sick plants the rest look clear. glass and gravel are clear :-) How do I know what the correct flow rate should be of the water from the filter system ? Thanks Greg
  13. Hi. I'm new to keeping tropical fish and aquarium plants. Some of my plant are doing well and some seem to die. Can you please advise . I had these planted : What are these called ?
