The tank is an Aqua one ar380 so well sealed, filter inlet is quite fine so I don't think he could have fit in there. I can't see it jammed anywhere but there are some dense mosses and driftwood. I was hoping not to have to remove it might just have to this morning.

So, I have a 34l tank, one young betta about 4cm body, 1 young bristlenose, around 3cm, and 1 small guppy around 1.5cm. At some point in the last 48 hours the guppy has disappeared, I can't see any sign of it, in any shape. Is it possible or likely that the betta and or bn could dispose of one within 48 hrs? Don't want to rip apart the tank to find it if it won't be found. On another note they have been cohabitating for around a month with no signs of aggression so if the betta is responsible then it came out of nowhere.

No was a little disappointed in the fish stock, lots of mollies, guppies, plus red tailed sharks, electric yellows, plenty of goldfish. Great large store though with room to move and a lot of options, friendly staff, hope they get some more interesting fish in once they are more established

Stopped and said hi to someone working on the place today, owner maybe? Very friendly anyway. She said the are due to open Friday, they have 7 banks of 3 tanks of around 120-150litre ish? Only saw them briefly, but very keen to check it out next weekend.

I noticed yesterday there is a new Pet Centre opening in upper hutt, between where the mall is and smiths city. Had a peek inside, it says opening early June but there's not much inside yet. Huge premises though, will be great to see a new pet shop in upper hutt, current one is a bit lacking. Anybody know anything about it or involved with it?

I've picked up last week my first betta. Red with some blue accents, presume he is a VT although his fins are still quite short, pics to come. I have noticed about 2/3 days after settling in there is a small black line along part of the far edge of his tail. After some quick research I'm led to think it may be fin rot, which would be caused by stress or poor water conditions. The tank is around 2 months old, was cycled using borrowed live fish. Water tests about 3 weeks ago were all fine. He lives in an aqua one ar380 34litre tank with one guppy and a young bristlenose. Tank has some driftwood and a fair bit of moss. I do wonder if the overhead built in filter is a bit much for him and could be a source of stress, although he doesn't really seem bothered by it and has areas in the tank which have very little movement where he sometimes hangs out. What should I do about his black line, is there anything else it may be that I should investigate?

Hi! and tell me about natives that can be found in upper hut

I thought as much, there were plenty of the trout at different points up the steam, and there were 5 or 6 bullies in one place -

Went for another journey up here, just myself and one other this time meaning we were much quieter and had a very good catch! Managed to catch one of each of the variations i mentioned above, and pics which should be enough to identify each type. Learnt a lot about photographing the fish so you will the pictures are pretty average. Biggest lesson was a deep red bucket isn't the best option, the takeaway dishes seen in other posts here will be what I take next time. Pics: SN202800 by joff_nz, on Flickr Didnt manage to catch ^this^ chap, but one of his friends: SN202802 by joff_nz, on Flickr SN202792 by joff_nz, on Flickr Nosy dog checking out our catch SN202789 by joff_nz, on Flickr SN202788 by joff_nz, on Flickr And this chap which looks to be the same type as the larger one above but much smaller, about 10cm SN202785 by joff_nz, on Flickr SN202781 by joff_nz, on Flickr -
Wow. Glad to see you're (somewhat) ok after that! Amazing.

Thanks for the update preacher, I was wondering what had happened to that area over the weekend.

Hey preacher! We saw plenty of fish and a small koura in the stream itself, with particular spots being rather busy. In the dam we found a big koura, as well as some small fish which I thought were inanga by my very minimal Id skills, and we saw a couple of eels in the stream as well. The third variation in my post above may well have been small trout. Keen to see some shrimp as I haven't yet come across any, and had planned to check out the weir. Have the scaping they have been doing there had any negative effects? -
Thanks for the welcomes all, will update profiles and avatars etc when I am at a computer rather than my tablet :-)

Thanks Stella but I'd hardly say native fisho, I've only started looking since seeing the threads on here, before that I had absolutely no idea that our streams even had so much life or that there was such thing as koura. Was completely oblivious

Thanks Stella, I have been reading a LOT of your posts over the last few months and love your work. A friend of mine who works at lower Hutt library was ordering me the book from a wairarapa library, but somebody had checked it out and obviously it was too good to take back! I'm very interested in getting one but budget doesn't allow it at this exact moment due to new baby upcoming. I've been keeping an eye on preachers posts too and hoped he would answer here, he seems to have a very good finger on the local options. I *think* the ones we saw a lot of were inanga but will try to get some pics. Took some nets on our second journey but we had a bigger group of people and might have made them a bit nervous because they were all too fast and we caught nothing other than a couple koura -
Thanks Zev, had somehow missed that page and Is a great help to try I'd what I have seen out there.

Hi all, new here, been browsing for a while but signed up to get some info about where to go looking in or near upper Hutt for some good fish. While I would love to set up a tank, unfortunately I don't have the space to do it justice so am satisfied with just looking for now. I've made a couple of trips up to a dam in birchville and have seen 3 distinct variety of fish at least as well as koura. One there is plenty of, around 10 cm long and hang out in the shallows where there is a light current. Light brown and thin. another which I have only seen a couple. Stays very still sitting on the bottom where there is a sandy bottom with leaf litter and such. It is a kind of diamond shape, wider at the head end and tapers to a point, dark brown around 12-15cm long and maybe 2cm wide at the wieest point. And a third type which I have seen only in deeper parts which is around 25 cm long and 4ish cm thick. Spotted on the top with less marks on the bottom and when you shine a torch through it has a bit of a pinkness to it. Just hung out in the same place in a slow moving, deep part of the stream. Wasn't to bothered about me coming up close. I'd love to hear some suggestions of places to check out, you can pm me if you don't want them to be in the public eye?

Hi all, I've been browsing on here for about 6 months but never bothered to sign up. I became interested in what was happening in the natives section, and a couple of weeks ago roped a friend in to go out hunting to see what's around. We went up into the hills to follow a stream and was excited to see a number of fish which I'm totally inept at identifying as well as a couple of eels. We went again Friday just been and also managed to find 2 koura, one about 4 cm long in the body and one about 10. Unfortunately no pictures but we plan to go up often to photograph and try to learn to identify what we have around. I've currently got a little splish and splash 27 litre tank cycling with 2 guppies. I also have a 38l aqua one which I intend to set up once our kitchen is finished and will probably house a betta. I do most of my forming on my tablet or phone so excuse me if my typing as errors or something has been autocorrected to an unrelated word. Johnathon
