  1. I really like the look of this combination, I think it is Pheonix who has a Dem/Electric Yellow tank? How big are the Dems fully grown, could a tank this size handle having the needed 10-15+ in it long term? I don't have the tank yet so won't be ready for fish just yet I'm waiting on the lovely Jennifer to make her next trip to Dunedin- she will bring it with her! Yay. Then I will have to cycle it before I'm ready for the fun stuff. I will definitely keep you in mind when the time comes
  2. Hi guys, I'm good friends with Jennifer and she has recommended that I come and have a chat to you all about some ideas for a new tank. I currently have 3 tanks setup at home, a couple of community and one with some large goldfish. I have a new tank on the way, a Jinlong - - Total height (stand and tank) 1360mm - Length (side to side) 1000mm - Tank height 630mm (note that some of this measurement is the base and top surrounds) - Tank depth (front to back) 420mm The filter is a Fluval 205 and the lights have reflectors too. I either put my massive goldfish in need of a new home in this tank or have a new cichlid tank. If I go this way then I still have an Aqua One 620 (90L) to play with. I really like the idea of getting some nice electric yellows and possibly something else- preferably blue Also I would prefer to get fewer fish and let them grow into the tank rather than running the risk of overstocking when they get bigger. I went to view a setup last night locally, it's currently on trademe and was the worst overstocked tank I have ever seen and the fish were pretty awful- put me off cichlids for a second! I would even be open to some nice dwarf cihlids. So I'd love some ideas for both options- 90L and approx 250L. I'm quite a newbie to the whole thing so any advice you can give me would be fantastic! Thanks in advance, Holly :dunno: :digH:

    Hi from Dunedin!

Cheers for the heads up on the profile guys! I'm sure I will work out this whole forum thing in no time Crazy Fish lady indeed Jen, the house I showed you yesterday has a fantastic rumpus type room downstairs, the walls are lined with fantastic solid shelves that are currently used for storage. I bet you know what I'm thinking! A certain someone thinks he will be having himself a wonderful man cave, lets just say he better be willing to share with lots of fishy friends :happy1:

    Hi from Dunedin!

Hi everyone, My name is Holly, I'm a Veterinary Nurse based in Sunny Dunedin I've had goldfish for around the last 5 years who were living quite happily in a 30L tank on top of my fridge, well it turns out I must be doing something right, because these are the fish that just won't die! Previous to these guys my fish keeping record wasn't fabulous. Anyway, the time came for them to move onto bigger and better things, which resulted in a nasty case of MTS, much to my husbands disgust. I now have 3 tanks, 1 x 30L which I have a few guppies in who had their first lot of fry yesterday (proud moment!), 1 x 90L with my 2 mammoth sized goldfish and then my 215L community tank with a real mix of tropicals. I have another tank on the cards and sometime soon am hoping to develop a grand plan of exactly what I want to have set up. I love the idea of setting up lots of breeding tanks, I have previously breed Labradors and figure fish has got to be a whole lot easier than having 8 puppies chasing you around! These things take time, and money unfortunately, but watch this space! I look forward to chatting with you all in the future. Holly
  5. Hi there, It sounds like you've had a rough time with your wee Kitty. I'm a veterinary nurse, I wouldn't reccommend starting the anitbiotic paste on her. Is this from previous treatment? It is important to ensure that when treating with antibiotics that you complete the course as when humans take antibiotics. Rather than a bacterial infection it sounds more like she might have ear mites, this can be easily treated using a spot on treatment such as advocate. Has she been treated for parasites previously? Fleas etc? I'm sure the vets will get her sorted, but for now I wouldn't panic too much. As critter_crazy said, don't give her pamol, human anti inflammatories work differently to those given to animals and it could indeed be harmful to her! If you are concerned about her being FIV +ve you could have her tested when she is at the vet clinic, it is a simple blood test and if she is negative you can vaccinate against the virus, there is a course of 3 vaccines to begin with and then you get it annually with the regular cat vaccine, well worth it! Even if she is FIV positive which is unlikely coming from a rescue society, she could sill lead a fairly normal, long and happy life. Often the main trouble with FIV +ve cats is that their immune system is a little compromised which means they pick up bugs a little more often, take longer to recover from infections and can develop dental issues, all this aside, they can still be fantastic pets and just need a little more attention. Good luck at the vets tomorrow!
