Not sure about other danios, but Celestial pearl danios are also very peaceful. They love chasing each other, but no nipping and seem to leave all other fish alone. They are with 2 oto cats and a betta, and I've yet to see a single nipped fin in that tank, can't say the same for when I had ember tetras with my betta.

I have one of these as well. Apparently you're meant to redo the test whenever you do a water change, so assuming you do water changes once every 1-2 weeks at least, then it shouldn't matter? The thing doesn't work for me though . White fluffy stuff keeps growing on the suction cup and skewing the readings of mine.

Good tip. I've been feeding mine quite often though. Once before work in the morning, first thing after work at around 6pm, then about 4-5 more feedings between then and midnight. I'm feeding liquifry 1, about 1-2 drops each time. That's less than the recommended amount, but I rather do it often rather than a large amount each time. I've been watching them eat and they only really eat if the particles are small enough, and only eat from the middle of the water column, so it's pointless to do more than 1 or 2 drops at a time or the excess will just sink to the bottom where the fry don't seem to touch it. Started introducing a bit of decapsulated brine shrimp eggs as well as picking out a few of the tiniest white worms I can find. They still ignore these new foods most of the time, but one or two of the largest fry have been nibbling a little bit of the stuff, so I think I only have to wait till they're a little bit bigger before they'll start seriously eating these other food.

*Face+palm*. Clearly confirms that I know nothing about the stuff then

Ah okay, thanks for that. It's pretty hard to find what's safe and good to use. Especially when the stuff you manage to look up on the net often aren't even available here in NZ and we have to look for alternatives. I really don't know the first thing about cements, except you 'add water, and it'll eventually harden' I don't even know the difference between asphalt, tar, motar, plaster and any other kinds.

They're definitely fun to breed . Fry sure take long to grow though, I always though fish grow really fast. but read a post that said it takes them months to reach adult/breeding age. Mine are about a month old now and they'e only just starting to look like fish. Been changing 25-50% water every 1-2 days, as I heard that the faster growing fry can release growth inhibiting hormones, that would slow the growth of other fry. DOn't know how true it is, but I'm sure more water changes than needed won't really do much harm.

I'll be keen. Finding something I can use is why I'm asking all these questions in the first place. I'll pm you.

Is it? How do you tell? I just thought it sounded liek it might be safe, as it said 'non toxic' and 'no fumes'

I have some similar questions regarding DIY poly background and cement as well, so I thought I'd post here to keep al lthe info together. I've looked up Cemix, but there are so many different types! What are people using, or would recommend? Cemix Premixed Cements Cemix Bituproof Plus I'm going for a dark, almost black background, preferably with a rocky/stone-like look and texture. I would most likely coat it with epoxy resin to be safe, unless if the Cemix Bitproof stuff would be good enough on it's own. Also does black oxide retain it's sandy look when used with cemix? If not would anyone know where I could source some fine grained black sand? Any help or info would be appreciated.

Well I'm actually kinda jealous of those who can get certain types of crabs. I mean just look at those vampire crabs! They look mean cool. I hear they can eat dwarf puffers though . http://www.crustaforum.com/board/showth ... ?613-Crabs

'You've got snails in you moss' doesn't have quite the same ring to it as ' you've got crabs in your [synonym for fluffy green plant]'. Er. Need to think before I type. Edited to make it a little more PG .

It'll really depend if they'll sell once they're big enough. If they don't sell I won't have much room to breed more of them. Trying to save for a big custom tank so that I can keep a larger school though. It'll be a 900L x 500D x 44Hmm Tank that i'd fill with all tiny fish, I LOVE tiny fish. I really want to get some dwarf cories but no room atm

I find that the fry are actually surprisingly quick, and good at hiding too. Even when the parents were still in my tank, I saw them chasing fry, but not even coming close to catching them. I took the parents out when it seemed that fry were disappearing but it turns out they must've just been hiding, as more and more fry kept turning up after I'd removed the parents.
-
Fry are all still healthy and doing well, I've stepped up the feeding, as well as the water changes to make sure that they are well fed, without compromising the water quality. Every time I count I count more and more fry, first 11, then 13, then 15, 17, and today's count is 18 ! It's been more than 2 weeks since the parents have been removed from the tank, so surely it can't be new eggs hatching. I'm pretty amazed with the numbers though. They are awesome, coming home to feed them is the highlight of my day.

When you text your sister at 2am asking her to turn off the fish lights/feed your fish while you're out at a party, and she replies "you ALWAYS text me about fish when you're at a party. Was wondering when you'd text tonight"

I most of my work is quoting prices to customers in the showroom rather than just on the computer, so it won't work for that. Your method would be fine for everything else except that a) computers at work are slow, b) we usually have several excel windows open at the same time, c) windows xp likes to nestle all your windows into one. Sigh, yea I know, they're pretty small nuisances I'm talking about now really, it's not that I won't cope wit the change, but after a 10 hour day at work and probably more long hours to come this following week. Just stop being logical and just let me hate this GST thing for a bit. :-?

See, when you have to do simple calculations many many times over, it's not about mathematics skill. 'x/1.15*discount' yea it's simple maths, but when you have to do it 1000 times over to many different things in a day, chances are you'll get 1 or 2 wrong. Now depending on the item, even a small mistake can be a big problem. Especially when the calculators at work aren't that great, and the '1' key and '.' key don't always register when you press it... Lets say, you only have 1 step to do to enter a calculation, and you get it right 1/1000 times, if you had 2 steps to do, you're effectively doubling the amount of times you have to do any working out, and effectively doubling the chance for error, and doubling the amount of time doing the calculation while the actual amount of work completed has not changed. Of course I'm not saying that skill does not matter, someone who only makes mistakes 1/10000 times is of course going to be better than someone who will blunder every few minutes. I'm just saying, that this is bad for efficiency, and this is more than annoying when working in an understaffed company where being able to work efficiently with few mistakes are very important. Plus, I have to do a lot of follow up for any mistakes made, often even when they're not my own mistakes. So yea GST change, I hate thee!

I'm more annoyed at the extra amount of work I'd have to be doing at my job. We're already backed up as hell, I had to spend an hour in unpaid overtime to try and finish a whole lot of invoices before tomorrow's GST rise. Plus we're not changing our prices, but my work is changing how we're calculating any customer discounts, which means a whole lot on extra maths for every single item we try and discount. More steps = higher chance of human error, and increasing the occurances of wrong pricing, and more angry bosses/mangers/customers about such wrong prices.

Got a higher rez pic? I want to oogle at it

There's a reason why the planned tank isn't nay bigger, I don't have any more space for it ! Been thinking about trying for a 45cm depth cabinet instead, but I'm quite certain that it just won't look right, once the BG is in.
-
The fry are looking good, but now I seem to count 10 instead of 11, so I'm not sure what the real numbers are. The largest one is probbably about, 8mm and the others aren't too far behind. Just looking at the fry today though, I noticed something odd. Some fry look like they're very slightly purple tinged, while others look the standard clear colour, the same as how they started out. Looking at the size of the fry, I'd say that there are purple vs. clear fry of every size, so I'm guessing it's not a matter of age? Now that they're all free swimming, they're too difficult to get a pic of, otherwise I'd try get some up for comparison. EDIT: Gave it a go and manged to get some photos, not great photos, but they do show the colour difference. 1st two are cropped images of a clear fry next to a purple fry. Next 2 are slightly clearer pics of the different coloured fry taken separately: Comparison Pics- Seperate Pics- Although the difference is really very minute, I still think it's interesting, I never thought such young fry would have any colour difference at all.

His prices do look good, but not really the style I'm looking for. A little too rustic for my liking. not to mention that it would not fit in with anything else in my home . Considering that it will be a display tank in my living room, it kinda matters a bit.

800w x 500d x 750hmm or so. Haven't had the tank made yet but since I plan to do a tank with a custom background with the heaters and filter intakes hidden, then I really need to have around 500 depth. Been looking on Trademe, but most cabinets only come in 400 or so depth. btw Morcs, I just gave that light of yours a go. It's Blinding .
-
Thanks, I think using the wood would work rather well for this light. Still needing to source a cabinet first though. Wish my dad wasn't overseas, then he could probably make me one. But considering that I'm not at all handy, it seems hard to find someone who can custom a simple 2 door cabinet to that size, with shelving, and holes in the back for wires without going upwards of $400+.

Is there anywhere that I can get a Light Fixture Hanger similar to link in NZ? I can't hang my light from the ceiling or the wall so I'd need to go for something similar to that. If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know.
