  1. Hi everyone, So. we bought a 300l aqua one tank today and we're thinking about how to set it up. It will be a planted discus tank. What is the best substrate to keep the ph down? If you have any pics of your setups, they would be appreciated. Matt & Emily
  2. Is the only benefit from these for plants? Is it good for the fish too?

    Discus Advice

Hi All, I have a 250L tank. Just wondering how many adult discus can be kept in this comfortably. It has good filtration. Thanks
  7. Of course, then theres a concern around reliability... May get around that with a seperate heater connected to power, set at a lower temp.
  8. 20w Solar panel (SCA brand, has controller built in) $250 - $300 approx. Deepcycle (must be deep cycle, designed to discharge, unlike car batteries) battery 120 amp hour $300 approx. Power Inverter under $100. So, call it around $650-$700 start up cost. Depends on how much you spend a year for fish tank power to decide if it could be viable. Any electricians out there that know how many amps a filter, air stone and heater would draw an hour, roughly?? Would 120 amp hour battery and 20watt charger cover it?
  9. Probably wouldn't be too hard to rig up a year round solar set up for fish tanks. Solar panel + solar controller (some are built into panels nowadays) + deep cycle battery + power inverter. Initial start up costs could probably (emphasis on probably, would need to really study it) be recouped in the first year. I work at supercheapauto, this stuff is getting cheaper and cheaper, except for batteries because the price of lead has gone through the roof!
  10. They aren't in there yet. Just doing some forward planning.
  11. Do you add any water conditioners when you change the water?? My tank has been going for about 6 months and has two BIG pieces of driftwood in it, PH doesn't seem to drop.
  12. Hi all, The ph coming out of my tap is around 7.5 and I want to get it down to around 6.5 naturally for discus. I know theres all sorts of chemicals out there to do the job but would prefer to use a more natural approach. What other ways are there besides peat moss in the filter? (I would rather not yellow the water) This is for a 250l tank which would have around 6 discus in it.
