  1. Depends whether oxygen is limiting or not. I'd say not, and that nitrite is. Anyway it's not nitrobacter you are trying to avoid. It's the ammonia producing bacteria which break down the detritus. Once the ammonia is created, you've pretty much got to end up with nitrates. I suppose there are two ways to look at it, convert detritus to nitrate as soon as possible making sure you have enough live rock to support the de-nitrification. Or, remove as much crap as possible before it is broken down into ammonia and eventually nitrate, and have a smaller amount of live rock to process the nitrate which does get formed.
  2. Bacteria cause this decomposition to happen.
  3. Really the key to keeping nitrates down is removing as much crap before it breaks down, and then having enough live rock to reduce any remaining nitrate which eventually get produced.
  4. Tank water is not an anaerobic place. There is plenty of oxygen in the water. There are micro environments created within the pores of live rock, and within biofilms which can be anaerobic, but the general tank is aerobic. Your fish would suffocate otherwise.

How many times. Any problems which may or may not occur will not have anything to do with phosphate levels, and how quickly or not they are lowered.

Also, chemical phosphate removers are only good at getting rid of phosphates you can test for.

Is that why zeovit is so expensive (I'm joking, in case anyone plans to use this against me later)

That has nothing to do with whether or not he knows how the system works though. (And is not proof of anything other than he has colourful corals) Once more for the record, I'm not saying (and have never said) that zeovit does not affect coral colouration.

So going back a few pages; Have you investigated this further yet. Managed to find out why i say this? Also, you are quick to discount my statements, why are you not just as suspicious of Thomas Pohl's? He at least has a strong motive for spreading misinformation. Why would I just make up the stuff i have said? What motive do I have?

Time for a new theory... Zeovit impairs reading comprehension. No proof, just a suspicion.

I don't see a contradiction there. Can you spell it out to me? Again, i have never said, or implied, anything to do with what you're arguing about at the moment. It appears to be all in your mind. Layton

    have a look

I'm spending enough money renovating the new house at the moment. Plus there's not a lot of room for any more tanks just yet.

Luckily I have never said that. Also, these warnings were not around 2 years ago, and the dosing recommendations were higher. Which leads me to believe that the manufacturer does not know what is going on with his own product, because clearly "overdosing" happens when used as directed. The manufacturer can not determine how much overdosing actually is (I presume due to lack of knowledge on how the system works), and uses the fact that corals receding and bleaching as an indicator to overdosing. Then refining the dosing scheme based on this experience. Then the question is, what causes this sudden loss of tissue. The explanation they provide is rubbish. Layton

What makes you think that? Everything i've read gives me no confidence that he does. Layton
  16. The problem with Kelvin temperature measurement for bulbs, comes from quantum physics, and the fact that the wavelengths (light colour) emitted by the bulb are discrete. This means that the power spectral density is not uniform. This non uniformity means that it is not accurate to compare the colour to a uniform black body radiator. For those wondering what a power spectral density is here is one:

You think the manufacturer has an understanding of how the system works? If they did they wouldn't be selling a product with the following warnings. Nor would they be changing the recommended dosages every few weeks. zeovit zeobak zeostart
  18. What material? All compounds have different line spectra when heated, which means they give off different coloured light. It's quantum physics and electron state stuff. A spectral analysis with an average wavelength would be a better way of comparing bulbs.
  19. Kelvin ratings on bulbs are close to a joke. There is way too much variation between manufactures to compare. You really have to find a bulb you like through trial and error. I used to run Venture 10k bulbs (which many say is more like a 15k bulb), put them next to Coralvue 20k and you can't see too much difference, just a tad more blue. Layton

It does stop. after a couple of weeks of adding new zeolite. There is a recommendation in the new guide for dosing less frequently after this period. In all reality a one off dose is all that is needed to seed the tank. Because of the nature and speed that bacteria reproduce, adding a small amount daily will have little influence on final populations. And ultimately the tank conditions determine the populations size and growth.
