    Greetings!

Yeah cuz bdspider's rats might bite! Guard rats.
  2. If you begin a low dose of Excel and then slowly increase the dose over a couple of days you shouldn't have a problem. The main ingredient in Excel is actually used as a fish antiseptic/antiparasitic medication. I have absolutely no problem when I use 1 ml per 14 litres of tank water (that's a slightly higher than normal dose but the fish, including loaches and catfish honestly show no stress whatsoever). You can try that dose every day for 10 days and it should do the trick. Keep in mind, while you may kill the algae it may still need to be wiped away.

    My tank

Hmm, I'd have to agree about more substrate. Perhaps to start you can try to lay that driftwood down so that it is over more to the left and the short arm is pointing up right about at 1/3 of the way across the tank (or get a bigger piece of driftwood ). Strap a big bit of Java fern to the wood (where it can't get uprooted). Also, I think many fish of the same species look very impressive. HTH

    Greetings!

Yay! Hi Dan, great to see that you are on here. Has Robyn persueded you to get any sparkling gourami yet? They are really cool and are small enough that they would find that tank a very comfrotabel abode. Let me know if you want any plants.
  5. Agreed Caryl. Whether you treat with antibiotics depends largely on his demeanor. If he goes off his food or his activity levels suddenly go down then he could be getting an infection. Regardless, it will take up to 2-3 weeks before you see any improvement with the wound (it is healing from the inside at this stage). Keep up the daily water changes, keep the water warm and keep feeding him the best food you can get. If you feel like you must use antibiotics then do it but if he doesn't have an active infection then it won't help very much. You've just got to give it time to heal and supporting the immune system is the best way to do that.
  6. I feel like I can talk to everyone here because you all are so intellectual I can just be myself without too much editing - you know what I mean? I can really just say what I am thinking because I know you all expect the REAL information, and we can get right into some really nitty gritty stuff....but I really do hope it doesn't come out like I am showing off - I really wasn't intending it to be that way.
  7. Sorry for the jargon, I wasn't trying to show off...that is really what it is called.
  8. Not too many risks with metronidazole. It can cause suppression of the immune response by decreasing white blood cell production. It can also cause liver failure and neurotoxicity if overdosed. It is also poorly soluble in water and across the gills. Good luck, I hope it does the trick.
  9. I would ask the same thing as Ryan. Also, do the fish appear to be losing condition at all - is the head appearing thinner or more bony? Any wounds or lesions? The white stringy bits are just inflammed intestinal tissue and as we know that can happen for a number of reasons, many of which have nothing to do with parasites and many of which resolve on their own. I personally would not be too worried if it is just the occasional white stringy poo. Might pay to feed some high fibre food like daphnia - if you can't get live daphnia, try the NovoDaph freezedried stuff and see if it resolves.
  10. Anything really fast growing, like ludwigia, float some of them to block out some of the light if needed but keep up the photoperiod to 8 - 10 hours. For the green algae, keep up with the fertilisation, once every 3 days with pmdd and a 50% water change once a week to reset it. Keep removing the algae from the glass and anywhere that you see it. Are you doing CO2? If so, your lights might be the limiting factor. Just see how it goes - give it 10 days at least.
  11. Congenital open fontanel (as a result, many of these dogs are born with hydrocephalus). It will go well with the bracheocephalic bulldog. Edit: spelling
  12. Blackout isn't going to help anything. It will appear to work but your plants will stop growing during that time so when you turn everything back on you will have the same problem again. I would add some fast growing stem plants (even if it is just a temporary measure) and fertilise with trace (excess trace nutrients will not cause algae). Do a 50% water change every week to reset the nutrients and make sure you don't have any ammonia as ammonia WILL cause algae. Get those plants growing so that the algae doesnt have a chance. Remove what algae you can see and it will slowly go away.
  13. I use a big roasting pan, lay down a layer of foil and then lay down manuka chips and a couple of sprigs of rosemary and sage. Then I lay down a bit of fine clean chicken wire over it. I place the fillets on the wire, skin side down, and cover the pan with foil. Then I place the pan into a medium warm BBQ. In about 2 minutes it begins to smoke and in 10 minutes the beautifully heat smoked fish is done, and no mess! Goes brilliantly well with an avocado and chilie salsa. Mmmmm
  14. That is very sad, and so frustrating when that sort of thing happens right under your nose. Great that you were trying to feed them up though. Maybe you can invent a special grate that will allow the bugs in but not allow the big fishies out!
  15. Holy cow that is an awesome hood! Just what I was thinking for my new tank.....
  16. Good work. Feed him the best food you can, and a good variety - e.g. fresh foods and high protein. Keep in mind that fresh foods are high in water so you need to feed more in order to get the same amount of nutrients. Try feeding at least twice a day or more (as long as you can keep the water pristine). Nutrition plays a huge role in wound healing as does a warm temperature.
  17. Yeah, it doesn't like Flourish at all... It is very fragile too. Crispy! Cheers Alan. Learn something new every day.
  18. Check out this website: http://fish.mongabay.com/biotope.htm It lists countries and the types of fish and plants that are suitable for those biotopes.
