  1. Thought has crossed my mind repto ...........also many ducks visit, but of course there are laws against financial gain from these things. "Runner" is up in air at moment but I'm now without turtles or Blues so may need name change.
  2. Case of right place, right time.......tried for last time this season 2 weeks ago.........................did actually see ONE !!! whitebait but other than that just read a book
  3. and if you look look at link, check out number 83 which is also Rainbow Trout? Repto, came as a bit of a surprise but my trout spawned successfully in stillwater pond, wasn't expecting that.
  4. If you don't have fish in barrel a Daphnia population would keep it crystal.
  5. From my observations, particularly with reptiles,I agree with cricketman, I think its barometric influence. Stella, how long and how old is your giant? I spent many hours saving whitebait this season from people who were just going to eat them! so I could get some giants, have 300 or so ex-whitebait living in a soup of Daphnia in hopes I have some kokopu but all look pretty much the same to me, there are a few that are smaller and darker in colour than rest of shoal but of course those are the ones I released to main pond so retrieval is a big ask.
  6. Umm....for someone to know fish had a whole Blackberry in it I'm guessing the fish didn't come out of it very well?
  7. My best turtles effort was 9 batches in a season, total of 116 eggs with 7 infertile. 8 days has been shortest gap between layings but food and conditions have to be perfect to get that sort of number and as NZ is pretty well flooded I don't push them now, or even incubate half the eggs I get. NB Repto = Les?
  8. A week is nothing to these guys, it will be fine even as a youngster. I moved my breeders and they now breed 2 months later than they used to, I only got first batch of young a week ago, so I may well have babies available when you are ready,
  9. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n83/ ... z/fish.jpg Should get you to a pic Stella, conditions are perfect so size was no surprise but the fact it was chokka with eggs so early certainly was.
  10. If you are browsing Stella........I just found a dead fish floating in pond.It had gone a bit white but assume it was an Inanga,(checked your pics but shape wise they are very similar so hard to tell without colouring) it was put in pond as a whitebait this past Oct and was 134 mm to 'v' of tail and chokka with eggs, not a mark on it so perhaps it was eggbound but doesn't it seem a little young? On the other hand, more than impressed with growth rate and I finally got to see one 'close up'
  11. Out of interest.....what price are they selling for retail? Very few shops will stock them to keep DOC happy.
  12. Yep, only been in a few months, will post another pic in 10 years when trees get a little larger.
  13. Yep,done already, put 108 in from the creek I virtually grew up in as a child as initial breeders
  14. Not being exactly computer literate I hope this works Stella...................................................
  15. Used to see single fish swimming under jetty by torch light but only for first month or so, assumed they were Kokopu as not with school but of late surface activity is frequent at dusk but too far from shore/jetty to get a good look. I put an underwater light in about a metre deep to attract insects but between Daphnia and Backswimmers light all but goes out under cloud of water bugs, have yet to see any kind of fish cruise past light to take advantage of easy pickings.
  16. Under ideal conditions what is largest you know of Inanga getting? Also, do Kokopu surface feed ? I put 80 odd whitebait in my pond (30 ish of them I suspect were Kokopu) a couple of months ago, water almost souplike with Daphnia and today a fish approx 200mm leapt out of water during a Mayfly hatch feeding frenzy, knew they'd do well in pond but surprised at fish size today, be nice to know exactly what it was..........they don't mess around so viewing is a split-second deal.
  17. My guess is young Perch, yet to shape or colour, there are hundreds round at the moment.
  18. Sexing by head/body shape involves a measure of 'best guess' My most manly looking lizard on occasion gives birth so suspect it is actually a female.
  19. So repto is up to his knees in female Hermans? or a little sarcastic?
  20. Hi amb, I breed a few of them but won't have young available till Dec at earliest
  21. Greetings, I just found this site so can bypass the whole 'trial by error' as it seems there is a lot of hands on experience here, Question....if Inanga are 'land-locked' in a pond will they still only live a year even if they can't spawn properly?
  22. I have just built a large pond, seeded it with Dapnia and its now chokka with them. I'm looking for a whitebaiter in Masterton area to get some bait from in hopes of some kokopu being amongst them, long shot but worth a try, failing this and trademe mb I'll have to get gear and catch some myself.Cheers
