Thanks for all the info folks! Spoon I think I'll stick with two for now, but I'll probably be out to your place again to get a few more ;P!

So I got the new filter in, stressing the hell out of the Inanga in the process. Finish up, go upstairs and get some 0.99 cent shrimp that I feed my Koura occasionally. Cut it up into little pieces - to give my Koura something to hunt around for - microwave them out of their frozen slumber, pop them in... AND THE INANGA START WOLFING THEM DOWN! Success! They've even started to eat a bit of flake aswell. I just know these guys are going to make great pets, the lights don't even seem to bother them either ;D! PS: I've got an Eheim 2010 500lph internal filter, and it rocks, but it's pretty huge - the outlet of the filter is right at the surface. Can I lay it on a 45° angle to fit it in a bit better?

RE Stella Thanks for all the info! I'll have a good read when I get home from work - right after I pick up my new 500lph Eheim!
-
RE DavidB Thanks for all the info, I've only got 2 Inanga about 10cm long each. I'll make a trip to the LFS and see what I can find, food wise.
-
RE Heir Oh yea, Spoon gave me a bag of special aquarium salt. But wasn't too sure as to how much I should apply? I don't want my Koura getting too salty after all ;P.

The other night at Spoon's I managed to pick off a couple of Inanga, aswell as the monster bully. Now that he's gone I'm left to tend to my awesome Inanga! They're about 8-10cm long with lovely green and brown leopard print patterns. Now... What do they eat? I've got a lot of goldfish flake on hand? How long should they take to settle in? Can I train them to eat out of my hand like it says on the Niwa website? What illnesses do they get? What lighting do they like (currently 8 hours a day)? Do they need caves or are they happy hiding in my plants? Is 50 litres (80*30*30) + 1 koura suitable? I've got a new Eheim 2010 on the way, with 500 LPH max. At the moment they're just chilling under my plants. But when it's dark they come out and swim around, holding stationary in the power head outlet. I don't think my Koura's noticed them - so that's a good start. I plonked a worm right infront of the big one, but it completely ignored it. They're probably too stressed from just being caught right? Anyways, These are the first fish I've ever had, so ANY advice is welcome. Cheers, Romeo

Okies, Bully's back where he came from. Southern Encounters wanted to have a look first, but since he was so big they suggested I release it.

Hey, We were at Spoon's tonight hunting around in his creek and I just happened to come across a 15-20cm bully. In my excitement I thought it would be a great idea to bring him home to my 80*30*30 tank! I didn't quite realise just how large it was at the time ;s. So I'm just wondering if anyone's interested in taking him, if not, I'll take him back to spoon's creek. It's a retarded idea to try and keep a fish of this size in such a small tank, LOL. So I'll get him shipped out quick smart. PS: I'm affraid he'll eat my Koura! Cheers, Romeo

Gidday guys, My tank's been a bit lonely for my Koura ever since she ate all the shrimp (er, who's fault is that!) - so I thought about putting some more critters in the tank to keep her interested. Since shrimp are damn near impossible to come by, I thought I might try throwing a fish or two in. I don't really like the look of goldfish, and they seem to like hanging around the bottom of the tank a lot. I've also seen some WCMM's at the pet shop and they look pretty nice, but a bit pricey taking into account they like hanging out in groups of 6+. So what else are my options? The temperature varies from around 10°c to 16°c, there's exactly 50 litres of water (80*30*30) and it's got a 180lph filter on it. My Koura's about as long as your index finger from nose to tail. I don't think there's much in terms of native fish in Christchurch either ;[. Cheers, Romeo

*Cough* there's lots of skinks and gekos in the scrubland at the beach - too bad it's illegal to interfere with them. There's thousands of them at the Wairau bar in Blenheim for instance...

LMAO, so it's not just my cray that's utterly pathetic at climbing on things. It seems the higher it gets, the less stable it is. You should see it climbing on my plants, it's little legs are constantly flailing about trying to regain it's balance!

Gidday, I've just spotted a canister filter on TradeMe, and I thought it might be good for my Koura tank (1 small crayfish in exactly 50 litres of water, 800*30*30). The problem is that it's 600lph, my current filter's 180lph. My current filter seems to get clogged up and slow down after a few weeks. Would this be totally overkill? //EDIT: It's also 15w, which seems a little high - would this power usage be noticable on a monthly basis? Cheers, Romeo

Gidday Folks, I've got quite a few bits of wood in my tank and they seem to be lowing the PH quite a bit. Is there an easy fix for this? I was thinking of going to the beach and getting some seashells to put in but wasn't too sure if that was the right thing to do. In almost every Yabbie video I've seen there's always seashells in the tank. I've got some calcium tablet things from the pet shop, but they just turn to a powdery sand and float around the tank - nasty. So, do you have any ideas for how I can raise my PH above 7? It's currently around 6.8. //EDIT: Koura are apparently happiest around 7.5+ Cheers, Romeo

Hey Dixon, that's a great find you've got there! There IS hope for Christchurch after all ;D! I may have to go and get me some of those freshwater mussels once my tanks completed cycling!

The Warriors (ranked 8th) just beat the Melbourne Storm (ranked 1st) to book a spot in the semi finals. Making this the first time in history this has happened, and it was an amazing game to say the least. Hats off to the boys for a great game!

Oh really, well I was thinking of putting an airstone in for aesthetic effect more than anything ;P. I like to look of bubbles. PS: Have you looked in that stream for Koura yet?!

Chch Totally Tanked September GARAGE SALE!!!
Romeo replied to Loopy's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
So what's going on with the Totally Tanked garage sale? Me and the GF have been left with baited breath for the last week or so! Really eager to come have a nosey... -
It's probably the google indexing spider. I'm pretty sure it uses multiple threads to search through an entire websites content, so it can add it to google. Either that or it was an attempt at a DOS attack, but at 7am? Pointless... ;p

RE Caper I wont put multiple koura in together again. They get along, but one's the dominant one and the other's forced to be like a wimpering little dog. It's sad. I may end up giving Mirelle away in the near future, as I may have another koura coming down from Kaikoura - a white/blue one.
-
I've just given Nibbler away to Orim. I could have kept him, but it wouldn't have been fair on him. He's been constantly harrassed by the other koura, forced out of his burrows - he would dig a new one, and she'd chase him off. He was constantly trying to escape and he wasn't happy at all! Now it's just one, hopefully she'll be happier by herself.

PS: Are you the same KeriBoi from Skankyflat?

Romeo replied to Loopy's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
Ahh, bugger. I'll give the GF the bad news. Here's hoping for next week though. I've got a bit of driftwood, and the missus has a 30*18*18 tank and a bit of plastic driftwood for sale. -
Chch Totally Tanked September GARAGE SALE!!!
Romeo replied to Loopy's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
Me and my GF have been looking forward to it since it was advertised! Don't cancel it -
Right now they're not concerned with eating at all. It seems all their doing is the small one's chasing the big one around. When the big one accidentally bumps into the small one, the small one goes ape shit and attacks him ;s! A blurry little Koura battle video. Cheers, Romeo
