  1. Not keen on doing that Alan, A; I don't want to set up another tank and B; the young feed off the parents as discus do.
  2. A small amount of crushed shell or coral in your filter will help bring it back up. Forget about things like pH up or baking soda, as Stella said its better to be stable than bang on 7.0
  3. I disagree, look at Singapore. Or Graham Burton and William Bell. Both obviously guilty beyond reasonable doubt, 4 innocent lives could have been saved if they'd been given a bullet (not to mention the dollars wasted in keeping them alive).
  4. Teasers suck, post em up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Me too, but it seems to be happening a lot now! I've got a tank full of sajica fry, and my uaru's are still guarding their eggs!!!
  6. BK I think what you are trying to say is don't go easy on them because they were on drugs, not don't blame the drugs. There is a pretty good chance that had they not been fried they wouldn't have done what they did, so the drugs are to blame, at least partly. But, I agree with you 100% that they should still be held fully responsible for their actions and should not be let off lightly because they were on drugs. I know there are people who use drugs regularly and are otherwise normal law abiding citizens. The problem isn't so much caused by the drugs themselves, but the desperation of an addiction that consumes your life and distorts your perspective.
  7. Would they even be viable coming from a hybrid like that?
  8. Just a little update, the pair have spawned several times since my original post, and every time the eggs have disappeared over night. Last night they laid again, but this time have been guarding them better and nearly 24 hours later they're still there!! Not sure what would happen if they hatch, its not really a good environment for raising fry with a school of fat loaches and a big bichir. I guess I'll just have to hope they can defend some of the fry...
  9. And the hippies say our police don't need to carry guns... Makes me sad and angry just thinking about it, even worse when you think that the lowlifes who did it will spend the next 10 years watching sky tv with underfloor heating, 3 good meals a day and big street cred for having killed a police officer.
  10. I wouldn't count on it, AFAIK they're even more restrictive than us with what can be imported. But they actually have a reason for it, as in many parts of the country its warm enough for them to survive outside all year and could easily become established in the wild (unlike most tropical species in NZ...)
  11. Apart from the odd accident, yeah thats about it. Its only water, its a lot less damaging than a cat/dog/kid pissing on the carpet...
  12. LOL zebra plec's a "serious environmental thread". Nice one bureaucrats...
  13. Never used them, just do it on the IRD website instead. Go here; https://www.ird.govt.nz/cgi-bin/form.cgi?form=incrates Choose individual person (for most) The bottom year as above put in your gross earnings before tax The end result will show roughly how much you should have been taxed, check this against your tax on the earnings record. If its within a few dollars its not worth worrying about, a few hundred or more and its worthwhile.

    GEO BALZANII

Awesome, I'd be keen for some fry if you get them to breed. Hopefully I'll get a pair out of my balzanii so could swap some if you haven't got any by then.

Could be trouble if there is more boys than girls!

    GEO BALZANII

Seems like an odd ratio. I've got 5, Animates had them in about 6 months ago. Can't recall seeing any at Wonderworld in Rotorua last weekend, but you could try them. BTW its Gymnogeophagus balzanii now.
  17. Yeah I found that. Put up a post on reefcentral, apparently they're fast growers, and would need a tank around 500g (8'x3'x30") to be comfortable as they're active swimmers. Would probably out-grow my 160g in about 12-18 months. I wonder who they're going to sell them to, they had 4-5 of them...
  18. Buried in the substrate? Hiding in a different spot? Sounds like a complete mystery. I had a 30cm fire eel go over the overflow, but he was too fat to fit into the pipe to the sump...
  19. Different land-lords will say different things. How big are the 7 tanks? I've never had a problem, I'm always quick to point out that a few drops of water on the carpet occasionally is nothing compared to that a cat/dog/child would do...
  20. The last thing you want to do is put more water into the septic tank. My parents had endless problems with theirs until they set up a separate grey-water sump for the shower/sink/washing machine etc. The only thing that needs to go into the septic tank is the toilet.
  21. So by removing the waste you're removing the bacteria? I wonder just how much you will lose compared to what you'll save by removing the waste altogether. I just cleaned out the two canisters on my heavily stocked 200L tank, the amonia was starting to get up and I suspect it was from the sludge in the Ehiem which looked like it was well over-due a clean. I'll test the water again tonight, and tomorrow to see if its improved or made things worse.
  22. Even though you used established filters, setting it up with sterile decor and new water will cause a mini-cycle. You probably should have waited a little longer and added the fish more gradually, or tried to use as much old water as possible.
  23. How does having physical waste on the bio media help the bacteria break down the waste? I always rinse my media (in tank water) every couple of months, and clean the wool and sponges under the tap.
  24. Now you are aware of our problem, those of us who don't want roaming cats invading our sections, destroying gardens, terrorising birds and other cats, wrecking plastic greenhouse roofs etc. Its up to you to answer that question, not us...
