An interesting letter on that subject; http://myslu.stlawu.edu/~shorwitz/open_letter.htm The general gist of it for those who can't be bothered reading it is that the governments forcing/encouraging the banks to take on all the sub-prime mortgages is what has caused the collapse. IE it isn't really a free market when it is being manipulated by the government. Another opinionis that there is enough money around for the banks to get themselves out of this mess, but the money from the government is much easier and less risky, so why wouldn't they wait for the bail-out...
  3. Ira sometimes I think you're quite smart, other times I think you're an idiot. I could do the maths in my head to calculate the volume of a tank in litres based on measurements in centimeters, but being able to enter the size in inches or cm and have it spit out the volume in gallons and litres is very handy. With my broadband connection the page loads faster than I can open the computers calculator (by the time I find the shortcut to it) and it certainly processes it a lot faster. Its not really a matter of need (well for me anyway).
  4. I have friends driving up from Christchurch for a car club event at Taupo, so I'm meeting them there. Bottle of Canadian Club is a whole lot cheaper than the courier! Not all the 75kg is going in there, just want to make sure I have enough for ~2cm layer, and hopefully enough left over for my 4'. No plants, other than what I feed to the uaru...

    Name That Fish #5

Popular with both anglers and aquarists!
  7. Hmm, I'd better get thinking, I'll try have one by smoko...
  8. Is it a predatory fish?
  9. Is it a pest fish in new zealand?
  10. I usually add a bit with water changes, as with my currently over-stocked tank someone has usually been giving someone else a hard time and there's a few missing scales or torn fins.
  11. Or you type "aquarium volume calculator" into Google and find this site: http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php 8)
  12. Nothing exciting to report, getting 75kg of sand from Christchurch in just over a weeks time. In the mean time here's Pinkie, the worlds happiest convict... Is it too heavily stocked??
  13. I've heard that about discus and polypterus, but never clowns. Where did you read it? Just another reason why big water changes are important even if your parameters are good, there's a heap of other things we don't test for that could build up.
  14. Were they eating at all? Make sure you pick good fat healthy ones from the shop, and I could suggest a group of 5 as the bare minimum, and plan on upgrading from a 200L tank if you want to keep them for life.

  18. Big clue, it has relatives in Asia, Australia, and South America....
