  1. I was thinking about it but my boyfriend is really set on making me the metal stand, I even hinted at me just buying that tank and stand because I work at an animates store... But he seemed pretty gutted when I suggested that so alas he gets to play with big dangerous toys
  2. After much deliberation my bf convinced me that I should let him build me a metal tank stand for my new 3ft tank... I was just wondering if anyone had any good designs that would be better than others? And what type of metal to use? Like would steel be the best? etc.. All help would be greatly appreciated..
  3. If you don't mind me asking - How much did your Jewel cost? And around how much would a stand cost to be made by a stand maker? I mean, its not that I don't trust my bfs handywork.... Okay, it kind of is.
  4. Very true. They look nicer though - IMO
  5. Or "Aleas professional biological filter" - sorry, im just looking around TM at all the external filters they have... if i cant find one though I'll probably order one off petplanet
  6. Does anyone know how Sun-sun filters are?
  7. Wow thats a good price for that deal... I was tempted to buy a few off TM that seemed like quite good deals but my main problem was space in my room... And I didn't want to buy a stand that would warp
  8. to be honest i have no idea.. I just bought the lot of plants off TM today and the description was just "bulk" so it could be a huge variety... and as for my light.. no idea - it was built into the fish tank i bought and didn't come with an instruction manual, however got a new 15W bulb for it today... Sorry, I'm a big noob at this sort of thing
  9. I just purchased a 3ft tank off TM that measures 915x380x380mm and I was thinking of using an external filter for it rather than an internal one which I currently use on my 2ft tank... However I know absolutely nothing about filters so I was wondering if anyone could help me please? Like whats a good [affordable] brand and how can I tell if it's worth it, where can I get them from? Things like that...
  10. I went to HFF today and looked at their plant fertilises... Besides the one I was recommended AGAINST buying (cant remember it exactly atm JBH or something) everyone this way out of my budget... (they were around $80).. Would using tablets or the liquid form of plant food be okay?
  11. Wow Naz! That's a lot!! What are you breeding? Good luck with that I hope it all works awesomely for you...
  12. I went there today and saw her - I feel sorry for her, but she seems happy enough just swimming around opening and closing her mouth
  13. Thanks guys After reading these and talking it over with my parents and my bf I've decided to purchase a 3 ft tank and have my bf weld together a nice metal stand for me. Hopefully it turns out alright! Fingers crossed
  14. I went to HFF today and looked at their range of fishtanks and I was actually a little disappointed - besides their AquaOne fish tanks with the warping stands they only had the Jewel tanks (that were in my price range) but not the size that I needed. So I was wondering if anyone knew any other stores I should try? I was thinking about possibly getting a glass Euroview tank and I would appreciate any advice/mishaps anyone has on these? Or do you experienced people out there just think I should go for a plain glass tank that I can get for cheap off trademe? My bf has offered to make me a stand out of metal which will be good. I just don't know what do but I have around $500 to spend on a 200L tank and stand... Help? :-?
  15. A couple of years ago we had multiple fish that looked like this in an outisde pond we had - We had some professional pond cleaners come and clean our pond and take the fish for treatment - turned out that half of them were tumours so they removed the lumps and we got them back, not sure how much it cost.. But the fish were a lot happier afterwards!
  16. thanks i already found a quote i like from the first link you gave me, second one down. very very good.
  17. thanks really like your quote btw - terry pratchet is an excellent author
  18. I'm West/Central - but I dont mind travelling a little bit - probably not to the north shore though - Would HFF be a good choice for the fertiliser? How would I go about doing that?
  19. I know this is going to make me sound like a total noob but.. Where would I get the fertiliser from? And what do you mean water parameters? would that be like ammonia levels and pH levels and things... ? Sorry if I sound really stupid
  20. Okay, so I've had my tank for over a year now, and it's looking a bit forlorn - I've just purchased some live plants off trademe (big bunch) and I was thinking of giving my tank a total clean out and a rejuvenation before the plants arrive.. This would include emptying the water (putting some into a bucket with my fish and the heater), giving the gravel and the ornaments a huge scrub, algae scrubbing the inside of my tank, giving my filter a thorough clean and replacing my light bulb.. Would this be a good thing to do? Like I've heard that replacing 100% of the water can be bad for the fish.. Also I read that dark coloured stones are best for fish and I have the natural stones, do you think my fish would benefit from new stones? All adivce would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks
  21. Wow! I did not know that - So I don't buy a tank that's too small when I upgrade, what size do you think would be my best bet to keep all my fish happy and not cramped?
  22. Hi! I'm Katie and I'm from Auckland... About a year ago I upgraded from my first tropical fish tank that was around 30L to the one I have now that is around 75L. I'm not sure how many fish I have in there... but my guess would be around 20: 1 Blue gourami 1 Rainbow Shark 2 Algae Eaters 2 Clown loaches 2 Cat fish 2 female Sword tails and the rest are danios/tetras... From reading some of the other posts it seems like I have too many fish.. But they all fit nicely in there and I haven't put any new fish into the tank in about 5 months and I only had my beautiful siamese fighter die from what I think was fin rot... My oldest fish I've had for about two years and they have grown substantially in size from when I first had them - the blue gourami, rainbow shark and one of the algae eaters.. I'm thinking of upgrading to a new, bigger and better tank but first I want to get this one looking its best so I know that I'll be able to handle a bigger one! Anyway, everyone here seems really nice and I can't wait to start posting new topics and getting heaps of helpful advice! Thanks
