    slimy culture

    That's a good idea. I think I'll do that.
  2. Yeah, 10mm is definitely extreme. Be nice, but would probably double or triple the cost for overkill. About 6mm would be what I'd aim for.

    paint for mdf hood

Shouldn't matter if it's non toxic or not since the fish won't be in direct contact with it. Most paint isn't particularly toxic either, go lick your wall, it's not going to poison you. Just paint it the color you want of any kind of paint and then put a coat or two of polyurethane over the top of it. That should seal it. Stain and polyurethane should work too, or even polyurethane alone.

    slimy culture

Mine are usually quite slimy, but the whiteworms seem happy. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about keeping them cool this summer though. I've got them outside in the shade in a white insulated container, hopefully that'll be enough.
  5. Looks like they're all gone. There are a few transparent eggs that I don't know if they're ones that hatched and were eaten or I can't find them or what. Guess now I've just gotta wait for another batch.
  6. I've got some riccia growing in my pond, but every time I try and put it in my tanks it dies.
  7. Looks like they've been eating the eggs. I'd say about 3/4ths of them are gone. Not totally unexpected, I know many fish eat their eggs the first few times. But, I'm going to start feeding them twice a day just to see if that makes a difference and saves the rest of the eggs. Still can't tell if any are definitely fertile, just look like little brown dots. A few look like they might possibly have something in them, but that's probably just my imagination.
  8. Noticed today there's a scattering of fungused eggs in among the rest. Hopefully it won't be all of them.
  9. I've got the pair by itself now, one has a trident on its left cheek and the other has a stripe and a dot. Hmmm, I've busted my avatar.
  10. I was chatting to Caryl on IRC tonight about it being hard to sex jewels(Hemichromis Bimaculatus, I believe) and the jewels have decided to make it easy for me. Sorry for just disapearing, btw, Caryl. There are somewhere in the range of 500 little eggs on two rocks in the breeding tank. Two of the jewels had penned up the other two in the upper right corner of the tank. Makes it pretty certain who the parents are. So, they've now got the tank to themselves and their eggs. Wifey thinks they might both be female and both guarding their own clutches, but I doubt it. We'll know if any hatch, I think. Jewels are supposed to good parents, aren't they? So I've left them in the tank for now. Any suggestions on what to do? I'll open my can of Brineshrimp and start hatching some when(Being optimistic) I see some wrigglers. But, judging from the size of the eggs they might be a bit small for baby brine shrimp at first. I do have a tube of fry food though.
  11. I picked up 5 more today. They're now in a bucket drip acclimating and I'm using water from my pond instead of tap water. The woman there suggested I use some Cycle and Aqua plus(Expensive stuff, I never use it) but I thought I might give it a try this time. We'll see how long they last.

    Plant ID?

No fair, all the hardy quick growing plants are considered noxious weeds.
  13. A lot of articles put the incubation time for TB, or at least the time before symptoms become noticable in the several months to several years range, which would make quarantine useless.
  14. From what I've been reading about fish TB I've come to the conclusion it's pretty hopeless trying to keep it from spreading or to treat it. Seems the only thing you can really do is keep fish fed well and in good conditions so they can mostly fight it off.
  15. Hmmm, if too clean is bad, that might have been part of the problem. I was using my tap water which is rainwater, pretty pure.
  16. No, it wasn't cycled because I didn't want to spread what I suspect is fish TB in my other tanks to them. But it shouldn't have mattered with only a little 1/2" tadpole per gallon over just one night.

    Wolf fish

Never heard them called Wolf cichlids, always been Jaguars or Dovii.
  18. Maybe if I ever decide to try again I'll leave them in the bag from the fish store and just toss them in the closet.
  19. Last one is dead. I hate using the little 5 gallon tank, I think that's a big part of the problem, almost every time I try and use it, it kills whatever I put in there. I hate small tanks but can't get anything any bigger.
  20. No, I haven't asked, they're usually fairly useless so I don't think it's worth the trouble of calling them.
  21. As of right now all but one of them are dead and the surviving tadpole, the smallest, isn't looking very active at all. Temperature's dropped to 20° and I doubt there'd have been time for enough ammonia to build up just overnight to cause a problem.
  22. I don't remember specifically which species it was, there were several that did it, the tank had cardinals, rummy noses, WCMMs and serpaes in it.
  23. I doubt the fish would swim upside down if the light was under them, but they DO orient themselves to the light at least partially. I had a tank that would just get light from the side early in the morning(No tank lights yet) and when I was leaving for work I'd look in there and see them all oriented vertically with their noses or tails pointing almost straight up.
  24. So, you guys figure they'd be better off without the filter(It's cranked all the way down) and heater?
  25. Dunno, but the few details I've seen says the best temp is 24° So I'll keep it at that temp as long as I can.
