  1. Thanks, but i do regular water changes already
  2. How do i lower my nitrate levels in my tank. They are not overly high from what i have read in other threads, 20ppm, but i am getting a fair bit of brown algae covering my plants and green spots of algae on the glass. Ammonia,PH and nitrite levels are all perfect. Most of the plants i keep are bright green and it spoils them when they turn brown Any suggestions?
  3. thanks for all the advice!! The tubes are all darkish at the ends. A couple of them actually have black spots at each end as well, about the size of a small pea. Will look into finding an electrical wholesaler but doubt there is any in my area. May just have to replace them one at a time. No hurry though as everything seems to be growing nicely. So how many hours a day do i have the lights on?
  4. the tubes are not giving much away lol,i took one right out and checked it thoroughly and all it has is the name, length and 15w T8. Have noticed in the past that one was a whiter light as mentioned above so might go with the yellower tube. I have been using the yellower tube and the floating plant have been growing really well. Also i just checked the tubes on my bigger tank which are 20w aqua glo and they have no mention of k's on them either!! mmm, maybe theyre all old tubes? i got them all with 2nd hand tanks so have no idea what age they are . How many hours a day should i have the lights running?
  5. ok ive had a look and both bulbs have 15w T8, no mention of k's on the tube anywhere?
  6. I have a small tank i use for guppies to give birth in and also bits that come off my plants or end up floating in my main tank go in the small tank till they get a bit bigger then get replanted in my bigger tank. I have 2 lights, one has an aqua glo tube and one has a power glo tube. Which of the 2 would be suited best for my guppy tank and why? thanks

  9. Thankyou both,i did use the H*W*L divided by 1000,so nice to know i got something right lol :bounce: the 2 front corners are angled off but im not too worried about the difference that makes,as long as i have a rough idea of how much water is in it.Now to work out how many fish to keep in there
  10. Can anyone please tell me how much water is in my tank please. The measurements are 61cm left to right,38cm front to back and 49cm high.By my calculations i got around 113 Ltrs, but i think i may be wrong
  11. Thanks caper, will look much better with a few more fish and plants and a light! Had trouble getting the green off the silicone in the corners, but im guessing thats stained and will never come off. Thanks Bill for adjusting my photos,i didnt realise they werent showing up for everyone else, will make sure any photos have the IMG tag from now on
  12. will definitely wait for a couple of weeks before getting more fish
  13. will keep up with the water changing for sure, every 2 days.Would it be too soon to introduce some new fish to the tank? Sounds like im just going to have to just try with a fighter and see how it goes dalmation....... got the driftwood boiling as i type so will try putting it back in tomorrow when i do the water change
  14. you guys are great!! so helpful.I already had photobucket :-)OK heres a couple of shots of the angel, another thing i was gonna ask is why is she patchy? She came like that, almost like shes lost her pearly scales......... And heres one of the tank...... Sorted your pics.. You forgot the IMG tags... Mod Bill.
  15. its 61cm left to right,38cm front to back, and 49cm high.the 2 front corners have been angled off.I also have a photo of the tank that i will post when i work out how
  16. have just taken some cool photos of the angel, but unsure of how to post them here? I have every intention of getting more hatchets and neons, but i didnt want to risk putting new fish in till the tank is the way i want it,dont want dead fish! I also would LOVE to get a male siamese fighter, would that go in my tank well do you think?
  17. i recently purchased a 2nd hand tank set up,complete with a few fish.A big pink angel fish,a plecostamus,a hatchet,a bristlenose catfish,a couple of neons and another one that looks like a female sword fish, unsure of what it is.The tank hadnt been to well cared for and was filthy. The filters were all gunked up so i gave it a good clean out and set it back up again and put a nice big piece of driftwood in that had come with it.Within a matter of a week the water was brown so i took out the driftwood and have since done a 50% water change once a week for 2 weeks. Its looking good now,and reading through the threads learnt that soaking the wood may help,so its in a bucket soaking for as long as it takes. The tank has no light,do i need one? There is a few live plants in there and i intend to get several more.I have heaps more questions but will save them for another thread! Thanks
  18. Hi there everyone, great site! I joined last night and spent several hours reading threads, and most of today ive spent here as well! Im kind of a newbie to tropicals,i had them years back but so much has changed since then.I recently bought a REAL cheap tank set up complete with fish and all.Have been having a few problems since which is why i joined. Not sure what kind of tank it is,but have calculated it holds roughly 113 ltrs, and it has a Fluval 104 pump and filter unit.I managed to turn the water brown with some lovely driftwood that came with it!! Im off to the learners corner to post a few questions
