  1. Thank you guys, I have to deal with a solitary female for a while, I think she will be ok for a while though. Will find a friend for her shortly. Hermy is keeping her company (the hermit crab called hermy - original huh) Thank you again
  2. Alas, my male seahorse passed away today following an accident last week. He seemd to have knocked the cage off the end of the suction pipe into the filter and I found him wedged on Tuesday last week. I gently removed him and found he had damaged hi pouch and dorsal fin, but seemed fairly bright. But over this last few days he has become more listless and wont eat. Today when I got home, he had passed away. His Mate was holding him by his tail and carrying him around the tank - real cute. Word from the hindsighted one - make sure the cage on the pickup pipe is secure. It seems to have damaged his internal organs with the suction - having no idea how long he had been in there, I hoped it was only a short time, but with the damage it seemed to have caused, he may have been there all day. Farewell my baby boy.
  3. yeah, yeah, ok... 9 w of the w
  4. Try to work out what the abbreviated sentences are saying. For example: 26 L in the A, would be "26 Letters in the Alphabet" Here are a couple to start you off: 1 W on a U S W and the 7 D 7 C of a R Have fun :happy2:
  5. I found this article this morning on the web - believe it or not, some idiot posted something about the bad news as it was a poisonous fish species to look out for. Obvioulsy he doesnt know anything about geological location of the Kermedec Islands. The first zebra lionfish ever recorded in New Zealand has been discovered in the Kermadec Islands. A team of New Zealand and Australian scientists led by Auckland Museum has made the discovery. Zebra lionfish are brilliantly coloured with zebra-like patterning on their scales, fins and tail. Other finds include an eel that none of the fish experts on the expedition could identify. It could be a new species but that won't be confirmed until an expert can look at it. The Kermadec Islands are 1,000km north east of mainland New Zealand and have been protected as a 'no-take marine reserve' for more than 20 years.
  6. Absolutely love Terry Goodkind. I have every one of the books and from the Sword of Truth Series, and acouple of others that have branched off as well. Highly recommended. The TV series is really a waste of time, no way it could get you as engrossed as the books. I too have read these 500 odd page books in just 1 day. They are that good.
  7. This test was based as a "Tauranga" test, it wont show Kawerau. Our exchange is cr*p!!
  8. Thanks guys, that link certainly helped. If it isnt Ngaroto then it is her sister launch. Either way it is identical to the one Tom used to skipper, with a new paint job. Surprising what you find in the strangest places...
  9. Does anyone know the name of the boat that is moored at the end of the jetty in the ad for the sony panorama camera? The ad is filmed in queenstown, but the boat looks like a launch that my husband was the skipper on from Lake Rotorua call the Ngaroto. The boat was sold from Rotorua a few years ago and we never found out where she went.
  10. Wonderworld aquarium in Rotorua often has them
  11. I would say because I do quite a bit of manual work on the desk when dealing with customers... Who cares!! The boss paid for it!! I managed to squeeze it in with the deal for a new computer. If he keeps me happy at work, he knows I will not annoy him over his money he spends on his 2009 GT-P Falcon... or the new boat... or the old boat that needs fixing up... Heh Heh, I really need to do more work on the computer and not watch the screensave, or feed the fish, or tickle them...
  12. Anyone seen the new screensaver? I have bought it for my work computer and then found AFTER, that you can get one with seahorses!! the site is www.digifish.us Awesome graphics, you can set up your tank, feed the fish, tickle them... I love it :bounce:
  13. Thanks DJ They seem to be bright and bouncy again today. Not sure what has changed. Certainly worth considering about the jellyfish idea. I am using salt water from the beach so it could be a very real possibility. I have had to filter the water of recent through a sieve to get rid of the small glass rod-like jellys (or maybe squid babies?), that I found in with the baby SH's tank when i was using water from the same beach. I wonder...
  14. Have not as yet been able to get hold of either products. I have ordered some from the vets. The SH's are still doing OK, and are for some reason only feeding from my hand, not hunting for the frozen food. Baby SH is hunting well, and the bbs are thriving in the other tank. Their breathing is still fairly fast, although not as bad as the other day. It seems the extra water change is helping. I will do another change tomorrow.
  15. Thanks for the help - I am not giving up. I am determined to get it right eventually.
  16. Sorry LA, didnt get back to the computer until now. no I havent, and the vet didnt have any methyl blue, I will try again in the morning. Have done another water change, this time 50% and gave the tank an extra clean to remove the red/green algae-like deposits (which are extremely hard to remove) The stargazing male is looking a little better today though.
  17. upside down has passed away, but the stargazer is still going. He is really hungry and I am feeding him extra by hand, but the others are still ok. I will try the methyl blue today and see what happens. Thanks guys all suggestions appreciated.
  18. No lights doesnt seem to make any difference. What about air pressure and weather patterns? We have suddenly had a change in the weather and even my ears have been popping yesterday and today with the air pressure. Could that affect them? I know fish go into a feeding frenzy just at the onset of a storm (best time to go fishing), what about horses?
  19. I have had one hold them for nearly a month, but they didnt survive for long - not sure why. They hatch and look like heaps of stringy bits of skin hanging under their tail for quite some time before they are released and swim on their own. Mum keeps the babies well flushed by pulsating her tail quickly and I suppose this gets them clean water...
  20. Finally got some pictures He is the stargazer, who looks so far upwards he even starts to fall backwards, and is in this positions for several minutes at a time. My upside down female... She has lost alot of weight over this last week and is hanging upside down all the time now, even when on the bottom of a plant, she is lying on the ground rather than upright Quick pic of my babies, (before I accidently plugged in the filter instead of the air and turned them into burley!!)
  21. The new baby is fine - chasing bbs like it was superman!! Flying all over the place. The adults are a little lighter than usual but not anything I would be worried about. Just the two that are acting unusually that are skinny. The pipefish is still fine too. Tom has just mentioned that he thinks they are breathing alot more rapidly than usual, I honestly havent noticed, they are breathing faster than usual - all of them. Water problem? Surely the baby would be having problems if that was the case... Trying to get pics for you
  22. One male pointing upwards and one female hanging upside down. they have been rubbing themselves with their tails, but not very often, or intensly. The others are fine - or at least seem that way, infact one of the males has an unhealthy like for my hand and will not let me go if I put my hand into the tank. He even drops everything he is doing when I go near the tank and he parades himself for me... I think he likes me too much  I have had a fine cover over the filter pick up for the last week since I put my baby in the tank to make sure she doesnt get sucked up the filter, but I have been changing that every couple of days. Do you think maybe the gauze is stopping the filter working properly? There seems to be ample water coming thru the inlet pipe, so there is plenty going thru the filter I would think... There is a little bit of debris on the bottom of the tank, but I am vacuuming that every other day to make sure the tank stays clean.
  23. Done all that, bar the 50% change. Done about a 30% change. Only using bbs from the second tank and filtering off the bbs when they come to the top of the tank in the lights - no eggs in the main tank where the horses are. Will do another change tomorrow and see if that helps. Checked the new water and it seems to be OK, so no worries there. Maybe they are just having a weird phase?
