Thanks guys. Hubby says he 'knows where the bung is for the boat to drain it'. No fun aye. I have been down to the beach tonight and got 200 litres water and I have started the brine this afternoon. Hopefully there will be some hatched in the morning to start feeding. LA, how much should I give them? I can only think a tiny bit, but I am not here during the day to feed them. Should I put in extra, or wait until I get home at 4pm? Whole new experience for me. Waiting in anticipation as to the numbers i will have in the morning. They are in a seperate tank and being only 12 I hope I have that many in the morning.

Cleaning my seahorse tank tonight when I saw something gathered in a corner at the top of the tank. It was baby seahorses! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I only have 12 babies, the male wasnt even looking pregnant, probably why we didnt notice, just a few for his first brood. I will post pictures tomorrow if I can. Yay! But, on the less happiers side, it now proved to my Hubbie that I dont need a bigger tank as i have been nagging him for. He says they obviously can do it in the one I have.

yup, I am washing the frozen mysis before I feed it to them just to get any hiddedn extras out of them before it is introduced to the tank. All the frozen mysis I can get from the LFS are a rich pink or orange in colour, and I wonder if that is why they do not like it. Any that I have caught and then frozen have not changed colour like that so it may be something in the processing, or they have been previously thawed and refrozen maybe...

Thanks LA, am intending on travelling over in the next few days if thats ok. Nitrites and Phos seems ok, and topping up from sea water at high tide from Ohope Harbour. Only noticed jellyfish there, not any slime. Constantly vacuuming to try and keep it under control. Thought about the overfeeding scenario and is possible, as I have been feeding frozen mysis from LFS and they dont like it, and are letting it lie on the bottom. Shrimps are looking extremely healthy I must say. The stringy stuff is the same algae, but it is getting blown into strings where the water is getting pumped back from the filter.

Thanks for that, it does seem to be cyanobacteria by the link you sent. Where can I get the furan? LFS? Do you think I need to go ahead with cooking live rock or will the furan work on its own?
-
My tank has an algae that I am trying to keep under control. It is a blue/black slime that covers everything and gets really stringy as it grows over the water inlets. It has covered most of the liverock and the BB and walls. I have to vacuum it every couple of days and it lifts like a layer of 'dried pva glue' in the sense that the rock and glass is perfectly clean underneath. It even has gas bubbles beneath it on the rocks and they get vacuumed up as I go along. The seahorses seem undisturbed by it and the shrimp and booboos are still happy also. Tube worms are thriving in the filter which is housed in the cupboard below the tank. Nitrates, phosphates are all oK I have heard about cooking live rock and have read up quite a bit, but do you think it will work in this case? And, if I do a few rocks at a time, arent they going to be reinfected as they are introduced back to the tank as I remove the next lot? I have tried algae remover but that hasnt even touched it - maybe the wrong type of algae. Any suggestions before I pull my tank apart? Oh yeah, and how do I go about cleaning the chiller. It is sealed, but I am cleaning the algae out of the hoses regularly, I wonder if it is inside the chiller as well? Or is it too dark for it to grow in there?

Wow, that's destruction all right. Our male cockatiel caused alot of destruction in the 'ego' sense tonight when HE laid and egg!! What can you say... maybe a household of females has rubbed off! I know my Hubby is gutted! -

Anyone have red cod recipes???
seahorsecrazy replied to seahorsecrazy's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
Thank you. We have filleted and are going to crumb and quick fry. Didnt find much on the website, but got the general idea. Many thanks... -
My Hubby has just caught some red cod on the long line and we need to know how to cook it. Nothing too flash, just whether you can fry it, bake it, have to fillet it, smoke it or what? They are currently sitting on my bench waiting for the cleaning process, but i need to know what we can do with them first> Any suggestions??? Clean ones please. Sorry to all those fish lovers who will get upset over my request.

Thanks Repto I'll give it a go.

I have been told that you can buy a bumble bee hive in a matchbox-type set up for the avid gardener. I have had no luck trying to source one. Any suggestions. Personally allergic to bees so finding a wild hive is not an option. This is a gift for a friend of mine who wants them for his garden.

Insect repellents safe for fishtanks
seahorsecrazy replied to seahorsecrazy's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
Thanks for the help guys, I am thinking really hard now, weighing up the pros and cons. I think though for the sake of my horses, I will have to endure the plague that will eventuate with summer. Best wishes to all for the Festive Season :bounce: :bounce: -
Insect repellents safe for fishtanks
seahorsecrazy replied to seahorsecrazy's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
Thanks guys, I was just a little bit worried that it may effect the seahorses. I do have a lid on the tank, but with the hot weather we are getting I have had the lid open and a fan running to cool the tank. Seriously investigating a chiller unit. We hit a couple of days at 40 degrees last year! I will keep the Robocan in an adjacent room and watch my cuties carefully and remove at any sign of distress. -
Does anybody know of an insect repellent that is safe around fish tanks? We are anticipating a huge sandfly and mosquito season with the hot weather and evening rain. We have had Robocan running before I got my seahorses, but it says on the can "Very toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not use close to fish tanks" I have looked at the Ecomist range, and it says the same thing. These are auto dispensing units which I found brilliant over the summer we used them, but what is avaliable that is safe around tanks??
